"In studio settings he could sing a ringing E flat above the top C."

Stefan Zucker: What was the highest note you heard him sing in person?
Franco Corelli: E-flat. He had almost three octaves at his disposal.

don’t forget the recollections of Ilka Popova, who toured with him in Monte Carlo, and said he ended the stretta of ‘Trovatore’ with a high-E instead of C.

Wonderful tenor. Corelli said he had more squillo than any other singer

@@cobaltblau8373 Yes, I just love this singer, he could do anthing from sweet and delicate to 'atomic' as one poster put it. But I have the impression that maybe like so many singers he eventually got into the habit of pushing even his amazing resources too much and singing too loud to often, so he lost some of the beauty and delicacy of the voice. But on the other hand I guess it's hard to say as aging will do that anyway to some extent :-/ But anway, Lauri-Volpi in the 30s was maybe the best tenor ever, I think.

Also i don’t think he was the loudest. Loudest lyric tenor-sure. But i doubt he was louder than say del monaco. Now obviously i never listened to them live but it just can’t be

@@songohan3931 Both Corelli and Lauro Volpi had louder high notes than Del Monaco. Del Monaco had a big middle register.

He does sing a low Bb in the Forza duet (kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJXFdqZre7B4qa8). It's weak, yes, but that's an exceptional note in the tenor repertoire, and the role was written for a dramatic tenor besides.

Indeed and I think people confuse LV's abilities with his choices sometimes. He was intentionally conservative about the lower register, it's not that he didn't have it.

I read an account by a soprano who used to know him well when he was young - she said his calling card was his impressive top E. He used to be particularly proud of it.

+orlando098 So it seems very likely that he was able to sing a ringing high E, though I don't know of any recording of it.

It was a mezzo-soprano, Ilka Popova, and she said about E-flat. He sang easily E-flat in the end of "Di quella pira" (!!!) many times in 1930s.

He declaimed in his "Voci parallele" that his range is F2-F5, what a humble man 😂 P.S. I think he could have high E, his high notes were absolutely effortless

The D natural is actually a fake. It's a C# from Ugonotti that became a D natural because of transfer and speed.

You are surely right. The high note is a Db in the score. "Les Huguenots includes bel canto in the true meaning of the term-that is, 'beautiful song', with its long extended phrases and pianissimo phrases-and also a cadenza where the tenor goes up to a high D-flat, half a tone higher than high C." - Nicolai Gedda (1999), My Life and Art, p. 86.

@@cobaltblau8373 It's a testament to Lauri-Volpi's voice and technique that it sounds almost legit even when the pitch isn't correct
@ZENOBlAmusic
@ZENOBlAmusic 2 ай бұрын
@@absdyna Not really, speeding up or slowing down vocals was a standard technique that was used to shift pitch. For example The Beatles often used this technique. Of course Lauri Volpi is still amazing, but when a note is modified in this way it does not say anything about the voice.

@@ZENOBlAmusic yes it does. Pop singing is not opera singing. There is a lot riding on timbre in opera singing. LV doesn't sound the same a Db5 is turned into a D5.
