The information about Learning beginning at 7:08 is quite valuable. Good question, Lex, and nice explanation, John. This info can be applied to much of life, not just BJJ.

So unbelievably important! I would just add, for the sake of discussion, that the decrement you experience and must persevere through, will happen repeatedly as you progress. Bodoni probably started being vulnerable to lower level leg locks, but under Danaher, was continuously exposed to even more sophisticated, even sneaky, better people, at which time he had to again accept some humility and persevere yet again in order to be exposed to another level of skill. Each level of exposure to being humbled is a test, each more difficult. It’s so easy to quit AND there’s no guarantee that even with perseverance you’ll master that level. For instance, if you don’t have the hand strength and skill, you aren’t going to advance. So there’s no guarantee and a lot of pain to absorb, both mental and physical.

At this point it’s gotta be Gordon Ryan. Andre Galvao, Roger Gracie, and Marcelo Garcia are all honorable mentions as well

I have to disagree with John, I've run into many extreamly confident yet wholly incompetent people.

They might are fully convinced themselves that they are competent even tho they are not competent at all. Those people also lack the basic self awareness skills, combined with the victim mentality of blaming everything but themselves. However, they are confident in their ability.

those are called idiots who are delusional or developed the art of bluffing others to save face. I totally agree with John that the self talk and self persuasion is not sustainable. It should be an evidence rather than a feeling : " if it worked 10012 times during training, there's no reason it would fail the 10013th time". That is solid.
