The flamberge is one of my favorite swords, and it's great to see such a nice example being wielded so well. It's hard to imagine the amount of kinetic energy and torque that exists at the tip of the blade during a full swing. It would definitely ruin someone's day.

@obeastness2 ай бұрын
It's unlikely anyone ever combined such arms and armor, full plate was falling somewhat out of fashion at around the time that these styles of swords came into common use. Even though there were certainly times where fully plated bodies of men fought on the same battlefield as those wielding a two handed sword of this size, their roles on the battlefields were much different. The lack of hearing, breathing, and maneuverability would have likely made it challenging for you to move about a formation protecting the gunners and pike men in the formation you likely fought amongst. additionally to take this kind of weapon against someone in full plate, would surely break it, it would challenging to wound this opponent, it would be far better suited to leave those belligerents to the hand gunners.

Interesting... a lot of the swing-work of the battle-sword doesn't seem to be concerned as much with edge alignment compared to conventional longsword and montante techniques. I always wondered if the undulating edge of the Flamberge was a means to correct misalignment when swinging the sword in broad, sweeping strokes during the frenzy of battle. A serrated, wavy edge like that would deliver lethal cuts regardless of edge alignment.

6kg? That's a chonky boy. Is that in line with what you'd see from historical greatswords? I'm going to guess the answer is yes lol, but that has to be one of the heaviest "true swords" I'd have heard of. My guess is that there's not many, if any museum examples *that* long (210cm is almost 6ft 9 for anyone that isn't great with their French), if not only from it being less likely to find men of your height back then - but a good modern swordsmith would still be able to more or less scale up the historical cases for taller folk nowadays. Still, I had something like 3-4kg in my head for these big swords
@darthplagueis132 ай бұрын
From what I've seen, 6 kg is on the heavier end of things, most were probably a bit lighter than that.
@gehtdichnixan32002 ай бұрын
@@darthplagueis13 well usually they are also more on the around 180 cm side of things and not on the 210..... so for the sice its a good weight but yes its on the upper end of the scale in sice and weight
2 ай бұрын
When I recently visited a storage of a museum, I had some north german battleswords in my hands...the biggest was 195cm with 4.5 kg...so 6kg at 210 is really the absolute maximum...the hilt alone weighs 2.5 which makes 3kg+ including the handle alone directly on the front hand...that really puts a strain on the shoulders in the long run^^ But that was the plan when designing the sword...huge battle sword with a stiff blade (didn't want a thin wobbly blade).

@@Mikes-knifeworldMeyer verwendet später im Rapier, Stange etc durchaus Stiche. Im Schwertteil lässt er sie tatsächlich etwas außen vor.
