AFTER MORE THAN 100 YEARS OF EXTINCTION, THE GIANT ANTEATER WAS SPOTTED IN SOUTHERN BRAZIL
Our offspring @rewildingargentina has been conducting the giant anteater reintroduction project since 2007 and we’ve seen remarkable results. The species has not only settled in the vast Ibera wetlands, but also other far-reaching places in Corrientes, sometimes more than 100 kilometers (approx. 62 miles) away from Iberá.
Recently, Brazilian biologists obtained camera trap videos of one particular giant anteater in Parque Estadual do Espinilho, located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, near the triple border with Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay. This species had not been seen in this Brazilian state for over 130 years.
At this point, it is difficult to determine whether there is more than one anteater, but Brazilian experts estimate that the growing population of reintroduced giant anteaters in Iberá is the answer to this new sighting.
Wildlife and rewilding know no borders. The giant anteater is back in Rio Grande do Sul after 130 years of extinction.
