Paused it before the drop, but we started using those Toughbooks in the USAF for our technical data books, and we friggin haaaated them lol. Hoping it explodes! Cheers!
@IAm-uu8vu6 ай бұрын
Yup, the toughbooks were absolute junk. I accidentally knocked one off a fully extended B5 stand at Al Udeid and it basically detonated when it hit the ground. That's like 12 feet or 4 meters in non-freedom. The really messed up thing was that the US government got charged something absurd like $15,000 dollars apiece for them. Now we use iPads. They work better and when one of the crew chiefs tries to eat it's the government is only out $300.
@Pen_Slinger2 ай бұрын
What's wrong with them? They overengineered?
@Roadiedave2 ай бұрын
@@Pen_Slinger Overengineered to accomplish pretty much nothing. Batteries run down fast. Can't access internet because they don't want anyone hacking so we had to connect them to the LAN in the tool room and login with CAC before we went out and that took forever. Authorization goes away if the computer times out or the battery dies for too long, and all of our batteries were on the chargers at 100% all the time so they all had wicked capacity issues. You could swap batteries and not lose authorization (most of the time) if you did it fast enough. And then there's having electronics around the aircraft. They said they're fine, but they popped a gasket when I waved the T.O. in front of the dump mast on a refuel. YES I DID THAT!! You want malicious compliance? That's how you do it! I cancelled a launch because both my batteries died and I lost my authorizations. Can't do a job without a T.O. right? And the word "Tough" holds about as much weight as the word "book". Neither of which works well. THey may be actual titanium, but if they don't bend and flex when you drop them it's the same problem as getting in a wreck in an old car. Car barely has a scratch, but all the occupants are dead. The watrproof part worked only insofar as all the rubber plugs and doors were closed, so don't swap a battery or CAC in the rain. Too cold made it slow and dim. Too hot made the screens all dark (not that we could read them that well in the first place),. And navigating the software was complicated and hardly coherent. Keep your T.O. open to the page you're working on my ass!! Then there's the deployment aspect where we had to lug around all the server equipment and adapt it to the local networks and stopovers. Then we'd either have to turn the screens brightness down or e-reader mode so the snipers couldn't see us. Wear your reflective belt. My last trip out our TODO just said fu*k it and re-printed us a basic set each for our launch boxes and a full set for the rest.

The legends are based on countless people doing stuff like this. I used to throw mine with as much spin as possible, as high as possible (which was about a three story house) and try to catch it. Most of the times I did not catch it, and it just hit the asphalt at supersonic speeds (falling + the spinning). Did this countless times without issues. My uncle was a forest ranger who spent the summers up a 110 foot ladder in a fire tower. He would pack everything on his back that he needed for the day and he would climb up at dawn for the rest of the day at work. I went up with him one day. It was all I could manage to do, as I was 15, and afraid of heights. I spent the day dreading the climb back down. But my uncle said the down-climb would be easier because we could toss some of our stuff out the windows and pick it up again when we reached the bottom. I was surprised to see him toss an empty Coke bottle out the window, but he told me he had never broken one, as the hit the thick weeds and the soft, sandy ground at the base of the tower. So, a few hours later I too tossed mine out a window. That night we climbed down and discovered that I'd tossed my Coke bottle out the same window he had, and from 110 feet up I'd managed to hit his bottle dead on, smashing both.

I've seen these guys drop thousands of items, and somehow its still very interesting that an office chair falls in an upright, aerodynamically stable way. With 5 legs.
@RabblesTheBinx2 жыл бұрын
Makes sense, if you think about it, the base of the chair is heavier than the back, so it has a tendency to fall base-first.
