I think that’s what mother robins often do when confronted with predators like crows. Crows are known to prey on adult robins too.

Saw a group of four or five robins try to gang up on a crow once, the crow pounced on one of the robins that was overextending its attack and crushed it instantly before it even realized it fucked up, it was the kind of efficiency that you wouldn't even see from some birds of prey, honestly that mother made the right call staying the hell away from this guy.

Wow...nature is astounding. That poor mother seemed to stay there to protect those babies and, within a breath, that crow landed and snatched the two in one swift move. Video Makers, you must have been shocked and disappointed to see this after watching for so long. Talk about a reality check and survival of the fittest... These two videos were amazing and I will encourage others to see at least the first one. Wow and a huge bravo to your work and kindness to share it with a larger audience.

Thanks so much for the kind words! Yes, the mother seemed to know what was coming and was on guard until the last moment -- I suspect she knew that if she tried to fight for her chicks that she'd lose, so she made the difficult but logical choice to sacrifice her family so she could survive to try again with another round of eggs.

After watching the entire video, I realized that the adult robin here is actually the father, the mother went off somewhere to get food for the chicks. The mother might be the one making the alarm call that put the father on alert when he heard it.

From what I understand, crows are smart enough to watch where the parents keep going and can figure out that they're delivering food to chicks. I've even been told that people shouldn't stand and stare at nests because crows (kind of like dogs) can figure out from observing people looking at something that there's something worth paying attention to, at which point they investigate and find the chicks.

As a person who hand raised a baby robin they can be very loud so no surprise the crow found them. Whenever I hear or see a crow during nesting season I am always worried they are targeting a nest. I have a lot of birds that nest in my bushes. Makes me thankful for birds who use nesting boxes.

It's nature......but very sad. All the time she spent building the nest, rearing them to that size.... then that happens. I heard a commotion outside my kitchen window one morning.....on looking out, a wood pigeon was spread eagled on the grass with two crows pecking the back of its head....it eventually died, and they dragged it off. 10 minutes later another almighty commotion as four magpies arrived, and attempted to take their breakfast of them. A war is being fought right under our noses daily by nature, with each creature attempting to stay alive, feed itself, as well as rearing their young, and attempting to protect them from other creatures on similar missions, who want their young for their dinner.

Many larger birds have tremendous ability to carry "cargo" -- consider how easily an eagle can catch a large fish and fly off with it. I believe owls can carry the greatest weight relative to their own weight.

@@DanielPereira-vc9ms Yes. Only 20% of eggs live 12 months. Yet there's no shortage of robins, and we're not up to our ears in them, either. That means that 80% of robin eggs never hatch or that young chicks meet their demise in some way (e.g. feeding crows).
