Funny you should mention that: I went to look at a Talon 2 29 (I had a 27.5), decided I would like the gear upgrades on a Talon 1, and the guy in the shop was of the opinion that once you start spending much more than Talon 2 money you should really start looking at the Fathom instead. I own the black/rosewood '21 Fathom 2 and I absolutely love this bike. This bike loves to climb. Giant has had an issue with installing a non-boost chainring on some of these bikes, so if you are interested in buying one make sure there is an offset on the chainring or you will be miserable with chain drop. My 1st ride was horrible; chain drop about 20 times. I see that others had this problem on Giant's website reviews. Giant mailed a replacement ring, and my LBS installed a 32t for me so I could ride immediately, but I'm keeping it instead of the 30t replacement. This bike doesn't beat me up like other ht's I've owned, yet the frame has great lateral stiffness. That Crest fork is much better than I had hoped. Brakes were terrible at first, but after a few rides, they are not bad at all now. This bike checks all the boxes for me and it's a great value.
@BikeBrosBikeShop4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that info. I will be on the lookout for chainring problems. I hope that they fix this on later production (Giant has been quite good in the past for resolving issues mid production ). Good to hear your thoughts on how the bike rides.

Hi Larry I also have a 2021 fathom 2 and I’m the lowest gears with throw the chain when peddling hard. It’s very annoying. Is the revised sprocket obviously offset to look at or is it just a lip machined on the bac?Mine appears to be just flat. Otherwise great bike can’t fault it 👍
@larrymoore25714 жыл бұрын
@@brockbarford1991 Hi Brock, yes you have the incorrect chainring installed if it is flat. The correct boost chainring will have a bulge inside the crank arm that will cure the problem with chain drop. Giant will ship the correct chainring to your local Giant dealer and pay for them to replace it.

@@kaleminnema1526 He likes it! If you're 6ft then it should fit you perfectly fine. We both felt comfortable on it. The only negative thing I have to say about it is the longer reach/chainstay make it hard to get the front wheel up for bunny hops and wheelies, but it also means the bike feels more stable on the downhills. @@mikerowley2139 I'm happy to say, no complaints so far. I've put about 100 miles on it too. I don't think you can go wrong either way at 5'-10", but if you want more nimble, I'd go towards M. My only "complaint" is I would like to get an aftermarket stem to position my bars just a tad higher. I do more rails to trails than "mountain" biking, and extended periods in the same position can get a little tiring. No fault of this bike though, because it's not really catering to rails to trails.

Dude your videos are wonderful and detailed who else is giving opinions from the 80’s or bike weight and so on. I have a riftzone 3 and have all the spacers under a 50mmx30* raise stem with 60mm riser bars and fat paw 36MM grips and it’s better but that’s about it. I’m sic of it and will be selling. The stack is like a 616 around and the reach is stupid at 505mm. I’m 6-1” as well and prefer to be on a large It’s a nice bike and honestly I like it for wheeling about it. This bike has 20mm taller stack reach in my plus reach which will still slow Me to have my elbows bent. Fenders are not hard to mount with creativity light plastic fronts are already made for for crowns and they have clamp racks for rear seat stays that don’t require braze on holes. And the weight mine with a 27.5x3.0 front and 2.8 rear turd is a bit over 34LBS. I’m tired of lugging the weight. We si over 4-6LBS on a bike it’s super dramatic especially pulling ten plus miles.

@BikeBrosBikeShop4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. Very tough answer. Neither is the obvious winner. If you're going to be riding aggressively I think the Fathom is better because it will leave you a few dollars to replace broken parts as you break them and potentially upgrade (brakes). are press fit bottom brackets still ok? how about pros and cons for a press fit BB compared to threaded...?
@BikeBrosBikeShop2 жыл бұрын
Hi, the two most common issues with press-fit bbs have been that they can creak and are harder to service. To be fair, the bad reputation largely was from other bike brands that used a different version of press fit combined with really bad quality control of their frames which resulted in the common creaking problems. We have been very impressed with Giant and the press-fit standard they have used for not having issues. The pros for press-fit is that it is a lighter system, incorporates larger bearings spaced further apart, provides a larger stronger bb and I think, in mass production, can make assembly quicker. Fans of threaded bottom bracket like the simplicity of removal/install and ease of fixing creaks (remove, clean, reinstall). I don't think one or the other is necessarily better.

Hi Kevin, I assume you're referring to seattube length? The Fathom has a shorter seat tube but quite a bit longer reach. Unless you have exceptionally long legs (like freakish level long), I don't think you will have any issues with fit on either a Talon or Fathom. You're also in the middle of XL sizing so you aren't pushing the limits on either bike. I'd suggest still picking the bike that fits your budget and/or intended use. If you're truely mountain biking, I'd suggest the Fathom as it is an incredible value and performer for actual mountain biking. The Talon would be more of a really nice daily rider that you could take on trails, but not going to inspire confidence like the Fathom.

Hey I’m considering getting this or a polygon Siskin d7 what do you think is better?? I ride a lot of tech and love riding. Also if you had this and i wanted to buy it but i have some parts that I’d like to put on it, would you charge me for adding those parts or would you install them for free?im thinking brakes as i find tektros unreliable. Also what pedals would you recommend for a fla rider???

I don't know the Polygon bikes in detail but in general they look good (they aren't really a thing in Canada).

For pedals, my favorite are Crank Brothers Stamps. They have proven to be good and have many different quality levels. I don't think we have any Fathoms available for a while.

We're in Canada quoting Canadian dollar msrp (which is actually wrong now because Giant had to increase their msrp to reflect shipping costs doubling recently)

How is it for everyfday use and bickpacking ? How much head tube angle affect this things ?
@BikeBrosBikeShop4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Head angle isn't slack enough to really negatively affect handling for daily use. For bike packing... not sure. That could mean so many things.

the question is how good is the Fork Giant Crest 34 RCL compared to other fork manufacturer ?

Is the max fork compatible with giant fathom is 130mm? Or you can put 140mm?
@BikeBrosBikeShop3 жыл бұрын
I don't know. The professional answer is that you need to stick with the stock fork length both for the sake of warranty and because the bike was designed around a 130mm fork.

I'm currently 5'7 and riding a medium specialized that doesn't fit me very well anymore. Would I want to get this in a medium or go for a large?
@BikeBrosBikeShop2 жыл бұрын
Hard without knowing what Specialized model and what year it was as the last 5 years has seen a shift in how bikes are sized, stem lengths etc. If you Know what it was about the fit that didn't work that will help you to analyze geometry charts to look for models that improve the measurements that are causing you issues.

Witch is more nimble between the fathom and the San Quentin I know it’s lighter but for manuals
@BikeBrosBikeShop3 жыл бұрын
The San Quentin is probably a bit more manual friendly - just by chainstay length being shorter.

Does anyone know if the 2021 fathom 27.5 and 29 have exactly the same frame that if you exchange their fork and wheels, you will get the same geometry and performance for both? I'm asking coz I'm planning on changing my fathom 29er to 27.5. Thanks
@BikeBrosBikeShop3 жыл бұрын
They are not the same frame - like a 29" wheel won't even fit on a 27.5" frame. Going the other way, (putting a 27.5" wheel on a 29er frame) will work but it isn't safe. Doing that will drop your bottom bracket enough that you will increase the likelihood of a harsh pedal strike while going over roots/rocks or cornering while pedalling - that can cause really bad crashes so I would not recommend doing it.

How does this compare to the Scott Scale 970? Thanks.
@BikeBrosBikeShop2 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching. This is very different from the Scale as far as Geometry goes. The Fathom is much more of a trail bike while the Scale is more inspired by older Cross Country race bikes. As a rider, the difference would mean the Fathom would feel more stable and be easier to manage on faster, steeper, bumpier trails while also putting the rider in a more neutral position on climbs.
@grahameread57192 жыл бұрын
@@BikeBrosBikeShop thank you for your reply! This helps. My impression is you get more for the money with Giant.

@@grahameread5719 Yes, in Canada, Giant seems to offer quite a bit better value than Scott in most cases.

Isn’t this version. With deore 12speed better than the 1, with sx? Deore>sx ?
@BikeBrosBikeShop4 жыл бұрын
Hi, I personally would rather have a Deore 1x12 bike however there are people who prefer Sram and they'd point out that the Fathom 1 has an NX derailleur (taking the worst part out of the SX line up). The Fathom 1 also has Shimano brakes - depending on your luck with which level of Shimano brakes (so up in the air as suppliers scramble with substitute parts) if you get the MT420s the brake upgrade is a good improvement too. My personal choice would be a Fathom 2 and upgrading the brakes to Shimano MT520 or better (depending on availability).
@MrTacoJay4 жыл бұрын
@@BikeBrosBikeShop thanks for the reply. I was thinking the same. Fathom 2 +brake upgrade Does deore 12sp use microspline?

How does this compare to scott scale 970? Also the frame looks suspiciously thin
@BikeBrosBikeShop4 жыл бұрын
The Scale is XC race inspired so kinda old school twitchy geometry, narrower tires compared to larger volume tires and a much more modern geometry on the Fathom. So for confidence and handling characteristics I'm personally very excited by what the Fathom offers and not a fan of the Scale. For components, the Sram SX and the model of fork on the Scale are less appealing to me also. The Scale is more comparable to a Talon 0, yet even that has a more modern geometry. The thin frame is by design trying to allow for some compliance in the rear end of the frame - this is partially possible because the frame has a through axle which will help give the frame torsional stiffness while still allowing some vertical compliance.

@BikeBrosBikeShop Жыл бұрын
I'd think of it more as a trail bike.. a bit lighter, more nimble than all mountain.

Strange the next bike up rung has a far worse group as the 12 speed Deore with praxis crank is far far better than a sx / nx mix
@BikeBrosBikeShop2 жыл бұрын
That is kind of how I see it too, however at least the rear derailleur is NX, a big improvement over the SX rear derailleur for function and for longevity. We've had some people thrilled with NX and a few who had legitimate issues which seems to indicate that the tolerances aren't consistent - so NX can be quite good if you're lucky enough to get one of the good ones.
