Budget Mountain Bike Gets Upgraded and Sent Hard!
In a previous video, we started fixing up an old entry level hardtail mountain bike, only to get stuck due to poor planning. We were going to give the bike to a lucky kid, but to meet the deadline we actually gave him a totally different bike. That video is here: • Our FAIL turned into "...
This week, we’re finishing what we started! With a bin full of the proper parts that actually fit the bike, we’re going to build it up and get it working. Then, we’ll hold on to it for a little bit and test it out on our backyard mountain bike trails! Enjoy.

I'm a kid, a small human and extra extra small. I love shredding and live in Tasmania Australia. I broke my wrist yesterday from going OTB on my old $100 hard tail with 80mm travel. I would love this and spend every spare moment on it. Love your vids. Harrison!!!

An oldschool tip from a retro biker: If grips or those "sticky fingers" wont get over the levers, use a little bit pure alcohol. It removes the resistence but it goes of by itself after minutes and after that everything fits. We used this with oldschool grips that were not lock-on but just rubber you have to get over the handle bar.

@gedrot2486
@gedrot2486 4 жыл бұрын
Even worse that looks like the rim is designed for schrader/dunlop valves, so the inner tube is eventually going to get torn at the base of the valve stem and you can't really fix those tears. The absence of a valve nut could make this all the more worse than it usually would be or negate the negative side effects to some degree, time ridden will tell us more.

I'd love to see a video comparing budget Amazon air forks! Kinda getting back to the Seth's Bike Hacks roots of finding budget-friendly, yet quality ways to upgrade entry level, store bought bikes. We all know the forks spec-ed on these bikes are garbage and the comparable weight of a boat anchor, so a fork comparison video could be really helpful for folks in this boat... Great video Seth!

Hail to the 9 speed and its 1x applications. The SRAM XO 9 speed setup, with cassette and derailleur both under 200grams each is my go to urban whip/ single track bike transmission. It’s weight-weenie light without any modifications. Has that SRAM non-halfassed punchy shift with that stiff titanium derailleur spring. The cassette is cnc’d from one piece of stainless steel billet so it’s as light and strong as can be, bombproof as long as you keep it lubed (which is really a crime to neglect and yet you’d be surprised how many people do) anyway the transmission will last a very long time. You can buy really quality parts for it used quite cheap. I run it 1x, and tho the derailleur is without a clutch it’s damn tight and since switching to narrow-wide chainring without even a chain retention device chain drops are thing of the past. I run the same setup on my CX/road bike too. I rode with coworkers doing bicycle delivery that were like ‘single speed is far less maintenance’ and that may well be for them, but I NEVER had to do any maintenance on the XO. And while they had to stand up and really stress on the freeway overpasses, I could choose my level of punishment. Also if the 1x9 user wants more climbing range you could throw on a 22 tooth inner ring without too much of a weight penalty, depending on a few obvious factors of course, like crank derailleur etc., tho I’ve not felt the need as I’m trying to strengthen my biking muscles anyway. +1 on the 1x9. One thing I want to add too is the XO derailleur is mated so well with the cassette you don’t even need to adjust the limiting screws on the face plate, I just have them backed out and would remove them altogether if I wasn’t afraid of losing them. Follow the manual exactly for adjusting the derailleur cable pull at the shifter and how much distance to drop or lift chain to the cassette teeth with the limiting screw and once you’ve aligned everything according to spec, a 5 minute job, you can forget about it for thousands of Km’s or miles - no maintenance other than a chain cleaning/lubing. Sorry if this seems long but am quite impressed with this transmission, when I saw Seth mentioning 9-speed, two words I NEVER hear together in mtb-ing. It’s all 12 speed electronic this and that, while the increased weight of electronic 12sp is negating one of 1x’s main benefits.

I've gotten obsessed with watching this channel. My friend recently gave me a mountain bike, however it's a really budget one and I plan to work on it and get new wheels, brakes, even a new fork because the suspension on it is awful. Watching these types of videos have been incredibly informative on how stuff on a bike works etc

Hey Seth, I heard on your livestream that you didn’t understand how I discord could benefit the channel. Basically, discord can be a place to chat with other mountain bikers. You could make different text channels like one to ask people how to repair stuff, one to find riding buddies in your area, a general channel just to chat around, maybe a Q&A channel... idk possibilities are endless. You can also add voice channels where people can talk with eachother which could also be cool. Thanks for considering it :)
@bigguyfilms
@bigguyfilms 4 жыл бұрын
I'd like to add more to this. I'm a moderator for a few discord channels so I may be bias to the idea of one. Making a discord server probably sounds like just another place to be overwhelmed by messages from fans and the like, but my suggestion would be to think about it less as a place for people to communicate with you and more of a place for the community you have created to communicate among itself. Like Thomas said, it could be a place where people could ask for advise and more experienced community members could respond. Another thing to consider is you could make it an exclusive thing for patron supporters at first so you could trial run it and see if it's something you think the community would benefit from. I would be happy to help get one up and running, as I am sure many other people in this community would as well.

Hey, RE sticky finger install. Have you ever heard of the hairspray trick? You spray both the inside and the lever. It acts like a lubricant while when and a glue when it dries... Just FYI. An old bicke mechanic taught me that trick.

Take my advice for what it's worth. When buying a bike buy as high dollar as you can afford since it'll pay over years of ownership. Replacement parts are like 3-4x the cost buying separately. Currently a 1.5k hardtail or a 3k dual suspension is what I'd personally would max out on... Beyond that is showing off. There are some decent hardtails in the 700-1k range new. If your budget is 500ish I'd strongly recommend saving a bit more.
