over 20 years ago my company did the aquatic plsnting around this 40 acre lake. We tried to get the powere that be to stock EPs and Bass but the then minister wanted trout. At that time we introduced native shrimp and some native forage fish. We had trouble getting the vegetation to establish due to erosion from up tp one metre waves and thousands of seagulls.

That's amazing, well done !!. Gee Bass and EPs in there would have been really interesting. Its been fascinating to see the excitement for natives in recent years.

Victoria fishing seems so much better than here in SA. I have a question for ya, what size rod & reel would you recommend for carp fishing?? The carp here are average size with the occasional bigger one.
@fishingmad4 ай бұрын
Yeah Victorian Fisheries have done amazing work here, particularly in the last 5 years with stocking programs and other initiatives. For carp fishing, I generally use a 2-5 or 3-6kg spin rod paired with a 2500 size reel and 10lb line. If they are small carp you can drop that and fish lighter.
@cryptoravenpig42414 ай бұрын
@@fishingmad Hopefully here in SA they could do something similar one day.......but i doubt it though🤞 Perfect, pretty much what im usin atm. I do have a few 3000 reels aswell, im currently using a 6'8" NRX+ with a C3000 exsence runnin 10lb braid & a 6'8" Megabass valkyrie with 2500 stella also runnin 10lb braid......dont laugh, i know im only catchin carp where i live but i love nice gear aswell damn it lol. Hey Al, after seeing your vid I was motivated to have a crack at navan park lake (melton) to catch my fish of a lifetime this saturday. You reckon worms, yabbies, or powerbait is better bait for the trout? Also when were these fish stocked? It says on the fisheries webstie that they will be stocked on the 7th? Does that mean ill be fishing whilst watching the fisheries throw em in the lake? Maybe i should go next week until the trout have become a little more accustomed?? Cheers
@fishingmad4 ай бұрын
They started stocking the stonkers last Wednesday and it will finish mid next week. Navan only got 30 so they will go quickly. Im sure Navan was stocked last week. In my experience powerbait is the best option out of those choices, scrub worms and maggots also work good too.

hey great video. i want to try and hit karkarook again but i'm wating for the school holidays or at least until this wind goes away. also do you know when the lakes get stocked? and when did you film this? keep up the great work!
@fishingmad4 ай бұрын
This was filmed last Friday before the strong winds and storms over the weekend. The lake was stocked last Tuesday. Fisheries will stock this lake and countless others again just before school holidays with the usual school holiday trout stocking of smaller stockies. There were 100 that went into Karkarook so hopefully some will still be there by then.

Great video! Used to love going down there about 10 years ago when i lived in melbourne, Never caught any stonkers, but heaps of smaller stockies from the bank on Rapala CD-3's and CD-5's. Water level looks abit down compared to how i remember it. I heard its about 16m deep out in the middle, is this true?
@fishingmad4 ай бұрын
Thats awesome, and yes hard to beat the old CD3 and CD5s still brilliant choices. Yeah water levels are low at the moment, even just after winter. You are right its a very deep lake, I didn't have a sounder on the lynx but if i recall taking my PA14 on there a few years back it was about 15 meters deep.

Any tips on how to stop collecting weeds after every cast? I ran a running sinker rig and tried catching trout, had no luck and only caught lots of weed. Tried using size 8 sinkers and then switched over to size 3 sinkers.
@fishingmad4 ай бұрын
Yeah it can be super frustrating in some systems the weed volume, places like Albert park can be really tricky for this. I tend to keep moving around until I find a spot that isn't bringing in as much weed on the retrieve. I drop the sinkers down to tiny sizes often size 0 or size 1 so the trout feel zero resistance and even fishing with a float can help in these situations. You can also use baits that float like berley trout eggs and nuggets
@glennstevenson62424 ай бұрын
Use a float.

@@fishingmad Managed to get a nice 3.5kg rainbow on a rapala rainbow trout lure
@VanDiemen19694 ай бұрын
Get yourself a running plastic float that you can fill with water, so it gives you some weight to cast and get distance. The line passes through the float, Tie the float in between two swivels a foot apart, so the float doesnt run all the way down to bait. then about a metre of leader, run a worm, grub or mudeye on a tiny hook under the float.

@fishingmad4 ай бұрын
With stonkers you can catch them anytime of day, this was filmed between 7am and 10.30 and all catches came between 9.30 and 10.30. Trout are generally active on first light but they can be caught all day. Soft plastics work well, small paddle tails espcially.

Hey Allan I’ve been watching your channel since I was 14 now I’m 20 looking to buy my first kayak just wondering do you think it’s safe to go out on your own and do you think princess pier would be good now or in the snapper season thanks a lot
@fishingmad4 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and following the channel for so long its really appreciated. In terms of fishing on your own from a kayak at princess pier there are some really important factors. Some kayaks are super stable ( like the Hobies ) and some kayaks very unstable, that alone makes a massive difference. Also you need to understand the wind and swell predictions, at the top end of PPB a northerly breeze under 10ks will usually be flat and sae, so understanding those things are so important. The snapper haven't fired there just yet but heaps of pinkies. I hope that helps and keep enjoying the content.

@@fishingmad thanks a lot do seals attack your kayak and what kayak do you recommend that’s not toooo expensive
@fishingmad4 ай бұрын
I've never had any issues with seals and if I see them I generally just keep my distance. Some huge ones in local waters I fish and they are not shy, so I just keep my distance where I can. Best entry level kayak is a Hobie Compass but even they are quite expensive, keep an eye for bargains on Marketplace as the really cheap kayaks are often very unstable and lack many of the needed basic features.

@fishingmad4 ай бұрын
That model TCurve and Expride are readily available at most tackle stores, that being said new TCurve came out last week so those models wont be around for very long. I get most of my shimano gear from Hooked on Bait and tackle in Hoppers Crossing, but you should be able to get them from most local tackle stores and online retailers. That expride is brilliant. You can also use 1-3kg bait rods, there are some vids on this channel that deep dive into trout baits, how to rig them and use them with light rods, so if you get a chance check those out.
