Those of you who think the shipping process is cruel, you may be correct, you may not. I do hope, though, that you realize that pet stores also receive their animals this way. I am not sure how you secured the animals in your collections but I guarantee that at some point those animals, or their predecessors, were shipped in like fashion. If we are going to discriminate, let's be consistent. That is only fair.
@fiagj210 жыл бұрын
Not only pet store animals, but animals raised for food, chickens, pigs, cattle, etc., baby chicks sold at the feed store, zoo animals, lab animals, rescue/pound animals (some are shipped/transported out of state or imported from other countries) etc. are all shipped/transported. You're right that people upset about this need to be upset about all of the above as well. At least most pet reptiles shipped through the mail only have a 24 hour max journey, since they're usually shipped using the fastest shipping method.
@CGP_Films9210 жыл бұрын
I can attest to that; I work for a pet store, and we recieve our reptiles in an identical way in an identical box as the one in the video on a weekly basis. However, our animals usually aren't anywhere near as big as these geckos are, so space really isn't an issue. You've just got to hope they don't stress out too much during transit.

For all you complaining about buying reptiles offline, It's overnight shipping, if it's a good seller they'll pack a heat pack or cool pack depending on the weather in your area. The package is priority and marked with live animal so the carrier is extremely cautious. It's not as bad as you're trying to make it sound and don't complain about how they ship them until you yourself have had a bad experience because I guarantee the good reptile retailers will take every precaution to make sure your animal arrives healthy because lots of returns or DOAs don't look good and ruin your reputation as a seller

The Pagan Cresties were thought to be extinct in the wild until 1994 when they were rediscovered and some were and brought into captivity- they do very well in captivity and breed readily. The status of the wild ones is now vulnerable. It would be great if all animals could live in their wild habitats without fear of being wiped off the face of the earth but unfortunately we don't live in a world like that.

It is also worth noting that you approach these situations from the perspective of a mammal, and more so, as a human. It is against our nature to avoid our anthropomorphisms, but we must try to overcome this. As a mammal, endothermic and highly metabolically active, we find tight spaces to be discomforting. Reptiles find solace and refuge in such places, best exhibited by the fact that most species inhabit tight spaces in their native habitats. These animals are much more comfortable and secure than you might think.

@jmhherpetology8 жыл бұрын
Just a note to address some comments - these animals live in tree holes in the wild (New Caledonia) as adults. As juveniles and hatchlings the most common place to find them is underneath loose tree bark that is still attached to trees. They, like all reptiles, feel most comfortable and safe when in tight places. Many people have complained that I didn't immediately put them in their cages upon opening the box - had I done so they would have rushed as fast as they could to find the smallest, darkest, tightest space in the cage to hide - that's where they prefer to be in the wild and also where they prefer to be in captivity. I cannot understand why people feel like putting them in small containers is so cruel. Putting them in a large enclosure with no tight spaces would be cruel and stressful. The most common place that I find the animals in their cages is actually in-between the back glass of the terrarium and the cork background (their back is pressed flat against the glass and their belly flat against the corkboard). "How do we know what they prefer?" We can measure stress levels in organisms by measuring the levels of certain chemicals in the blood at a given time (i.e. corticosterone). This is a common procedure in ecological physiology. My dissertation is partially concerned with stress responses in lizards. We call that - science. ;)

It was likely unpleasant in the hot Mississippi summer weather, but I found a small green anole that had been somehow trapped in my recycling can for at least 2 or more days. I noticed it move once I opened the lid and immediately took it out and laid it next to the hose bib. I saw it about 15 minutes later and it had already made a small transition from a sickly brown color to a light green. I'm sure its not the most pleasant experience, but with overnight shipping the threat to these animals' well being is probably pretty low. There was also a honeybee at the bottom of the recycling can in that same visit that appeared to be dead at the bottom. I dumped it out on the ground after removing the lizard and the bee actually buzzed around and then flew off to my surprise. It is only the proper human feeling to want to help animals avoid discomfort or torture, and the people in the comments who think the shipping is inhumane are not bad for it...just perhaps a bit misguided. Lovely geckos, JMH. Great video.

I used to want to buy reptiles but I don't want them shipped to me. Regardless of the space issue, I know how "FRAGILE" and "PERISHABLE" packages are actually handled. My mom worked for shipping services and she always told me the "fragile" packages were thrown around like everything else. So many things can happen to packages and I've had MANY lost in the mail (probably 4 or 5 and I'm only 20 so I haven't been ordering things online for long) so it's too much of a gamble for me to ship a life.

@jrenee10407 жыл бұрын
From what I'm reading it wasn't because of the way he shipped them (packaging and whatnot) but because he shipped them with a courier that does not transport animals. And because they don't do animals he labeled it fragile, but of course no mention of live animals. The US is different, you can ship amphians, reptiles, fish and similar critters without much of a problem. And no one responsible will ship an animal if it take longer than a couple days to reach you. Most sellers will require overnight shipping. As far as how everything was packaged in the video, it seems pretty standard and appropriate. I have seen fish packed into a single little bag and squeeze into a small box without any insulation or anything, not even sure it was labeled live fish. And that's pretty unacceptable to everyone.

I'm not a reptile expert or anywhere near close to but I have to say, the way they were packaged seems very unhealthy and unsafe.. especially the one that came on its side. I hope they didn't get sick soon after or anything. ):
@ayin_22677 жыл бұрын
lil ghost queen If you watch other reptile unboxings, they either come in the small plastic containers (like the one in the video and many others) or in a sack, depending on the reptile. This way of shipping is actually pretty normal and most pet stores and people who order them online receive their reptile this way. Also larger containers stress them out more and geckoes like small, dark places.

I'm not going to say shipping reptiles through FedEx, UPS, etc is wrong or right. I work at a pet store in my town and that's how we get our reptiles, fish, amphibians, and pets of that nature. I see it as just as long as someone is buying them, and giving them a good home it's fine. I myself only buy from breeders that are local, just so I can transport them myself and they are only in a container for an hour max just during the transport. But I know a lot of people aren't as lucky as I am to have many breeders nearby and they don't want a pet store animal so they have to go through the internet. Anyways, done with my rant. Very beautiful geckos also. (:

I find this argument invalid. At Petstores animals are just looked over. "maintained" if you will. When you buy a reptile from a breeder these animals are kept up with. looked after. Not shipped if sick, or with parasites. So what, they are in a small shipping container for all of 12 hours or less. They are given to someone with the love for the pet. I'm not saying you're a bad person because you don't want them shipped. But, you don't pay $50 for your animals to be thrown about.
@johnanderson760410 жыл бұрын
You are aware that this is EXACTLY the same way your local petstores get the vast majority of reptiles, amphibians, and fish? Not to mention the fact that most geckos and snakes will intentionally SEEK OUT a small space e.g. a hollow rock or log to hide / sleep in and the darker and tighter the better. It make them feel more secure and comfortable. remember this is about what makes THEM more comfortable, not you. As for care, Jack is right about that too, the majority of breeders will , and do, take FAR better care of these animals than some huge petstores that lack the knowledge and dedication to caring specifically 1 area of specific reptiles, amphibians.
@CGP_Films9210 жыл бұрын
John Anderson Again, another over generalization about pet stores. I work at a pet store and I can guarantee we do our best to take care of our animals on a daily basis. WE DON'T NEGLECT THEM. Is it as good of a job as a breeder can do? I don't know, but I promise you that every person I've worked with has been eager to learn new information about these animals at every opportunity possible, myself included. Whether or not you feel like the setups in pet stores are adequate enough is your own personal opinion, but we are held to high standards everyday on the job.
@NeonPossum10 жыл бұрын
Reptiles usually feel safer in small spaces. Plus this would have been next day delivery and such, it causes the least stress to the animals rather than a large container where they might slide around.

Don't know why I'm watching these video's now because people annoy me just keeping them captive.. Don't rush to get them out, then when you got one in your hand and it tries to move you shove it back in it's prison .. How about sell you 'animals' and lock yourself in a cubbard for a couple of days ''This is my 400th gecko, and when I'm not un-boxing them I'm putting them in a box on a shelf to live out their life'' ''I love gecko's''
@ItsFrenzy268 жыл бұрын

@alexandriamorris45968 жыл бұрын
Yeah I don't know why you're watching it either. A bit idiotic don't you think? Are you vegan? because if not you have no room to speak or complain. If you are not vegan the animals you have on your dinner plate and put in your body are treated much worse. Pigs are kept in tiny crates the same size ratio of containers the geckos came in after being forcibly impregnated. For months at a time. Chickens live in crowded warehouses ravaged by filth and disease, genetically modified to be so heavy their legs break underneath them. Male calves are useless to the dairy industry so they're ripped away from their moms before they even drop to the ground after birth. Then they're sent elsewhere where they are held by a 1-2 foot rope for the rest of their short lives. Cows are impregnated over and over to produce milk then when their milk production drops and they are useless for making money (maybe 3-5 years) they are hung up and have their throats slit. Have you ever bought a puppy or a pet from anywhere besides a shelter? Then you're part of the problem too and you are ADVOCATING exactly what you're disgusted by and complaining about. Yeah it is hard to see someone treating animals like objects. but Maybe you should be more worried about farm animals that people eat every day than someone on KZbin who is clearly treating their reptiles with significantly more care. If you are vegan, good for you but there are more important things to worry about buddy. I was vegan for 2 years but since I'm not anymore I'm not going to sit on a high horse and judge someone.

+Britney Rangel They are shipped overnight so they only stay in the packaging for a couple of hours. They are not trapped in there for days, not even close to 1 day. Yes, it seems rather crude, but I've seen many of these types of videos and I haven't seen one where the reptile was hurt in any way. So.. to act like a complete ignorant twat and peg someone as a "caveman" for receiving his reptiles in this way (like many, many reptile collectors, breeders, owners do), sounds like someone's bra size is bigger than their IQ.

I do not want to say that i hate you or anything your a nice guy to take care of those living creatures, but poeple dont we have to agree that animals are something thats starting to burn away, the more things people tame snd starts "owning" as a pet makes it sound like these animsls lives are for nothing... How would it feel for you if you baby got sold when it just hatched, how would it feel for you if someone took your loved family from you, please mske this stop these are living creatures and where born to live and adapt to the nature that we destroy for inclosiers for these animals why not just let them be, it makes me sad that i might be the only one thinking of this and that it took over 6 billions of years to create this but only about 2000 years to destroy all of it. Guys im not any animal guy, i do eat meat i do have 3 dogs and i do pla csgo with some pros but that does not make me not want to say that these animals has a soul, another pets life id another soul lost //devvan^

I see your point, but it's not as if these animals were taken directly from their habitat. Nor is it as if they are particularly endangered or native to the area in which it is presumable that jmherpetology lives. I think it's fine to have these sorts of animals as pets, seeing as they're bred in captivity and are raised to be pets.
@brendadavis49237 жыл бұрын
For the most part, taking reptiles from their families isn't actually bad since there are quite a few species that are cannibals. But the thing is, people will always want to own things. Isn't exactly right, byt true, and I don't think it's stopping any time soon. The best we can do is take pressure off of wild populations by captive breeding. The more captively bred animals that we have, the less people will import, and it leaves the eco system in tact. Think about it. If someone produces captive animals with cool color and patterns (morphs), no one feels the need to take them out of the wild. Many reptiles, though, seem to do fine in captivity. You're comparing them too much to humans. Not saying they're dumb, but they don't think like we do. They live the majority of their lives alone, aside from when they hatch. They have everything they need, and most of them do fine.

I just feel bad for the ones with longer tails,but you still shouldn't consider that being uncomfortable,just think,there spines are made differently,so it wouldn't neccecarily hurt or get stiff. And, they ship overnight, so they're not in there long. I wouldn't compare myself to a gecko either because your not one, and you have no idea what they feel. Overall shipping them does not cause harm, but they may be a little stressed.
