The Wooded Beardsman

5 жыл бұрын

In episode 3 of this survival series we finally get to check our lobster traps which we set off the shores of Maine 2 day previous. The goal of the challenge is to maintain our body weight through foraging wild foods only.
Full Season 5 Playlist: • Season 5: The Wilderne...
Malcolm 'The Hidden Woodsman": thehiddenwoodsmen.com/
Instagram: thehiddenwo...
Check out Zach Fowler: / @fowlersmakeryandmischief
We also are looking for other wild foods like turkey as it is the spring season. We do manage to get a red squirrel in a catch and cook which we add to our smoked fish.
The goal is to replace any calories we burn foraging for wild foods in order to balance our energy expenditures as modern foragers.
We bait our lobster traps with alewife or river herring which we dip netted the day before. This is all about survival and eating the foods that we can easily forage and scavenge from wild sources. We are really trying to balance our calories eating only wild edibles.
We will show you how to cook and clean the clams and eat the stomach. We will remove the skin and also purge and wash the clams and boil in water.
Malcolm makes a dandelion wild spinach boiled green.
The Wilderness Living Challenge is not a "survival challenge," but more like a test of the modern hunter gatherer to sustain himself on wild foods only. We will weight ourselves at the start of the challenge and weight out at the end. If we lose any weight at all, we lose the challenge!
Follow along as we struggle to get wild foods!
I am joined by Zach Fowler on his home turf in Maine, USA in the spring.
Here, we plan to do Season 5 of The Wilderness Living Challenge. The goal of the challenge is to gain or maintain our body weight eating only the wild food we can collect on site using whatever means necessary.
Winning the Wilderness Living Challenge is harder than it seems.
Season 5: Maine Spring, takes place in Maine, USA with coastal food priorities including fish, clams, crab, seaweed, groundhog, pigeon, turkey, dandelion, cattail, and whatever else is edible! Nothing is off the menu, if it's edible, we'll eat it.
We make use of all the resources in this challenge to meet the demands for calories imposed by the human body!

1. I've been cooking lobster and steamers my whole life and never done it in saltwater. 2. That seaweed is called bladderrack and is definitely edible. 3. There are around 150 calories in a 1.25 lb lobster. 4. The "brown stuff" which is usually green is called tomalley. It's a filter like material which functions as a liver and other organs. Great videos man, Your friendly Maine marine biologist

@@Shamariah2011 not that i have ever read or heard about. ive always just dropped them in the pot. the idea of dispatching them first comes more from the notion of a "humane death", but they die so fast in boiling water that it doesnt even matter.

The Wooded Beardsman your turkey call made my dog go fking bonkers. I thought I was in the clear once I calmed her down and you started explaining the whole “wilderness living premise” so I turned the volume back up And then you popped off with the calls again and she went bananas again! You might not be attracting infinite turkeys, but your call isn’t 100% ineffective!

That'd be cool. Although I must say...rather than focus so much on the cooking I love the survival techniques and how to catch or hunt, maybe more shelter builds as well. It's always good info. And knowing how to cook and use all of the animal (sometimes not something you'd think to eat) to really survive.

Zach's excitement at the first lobster pot pull-in was hilarious, only to have to throw back all but one, which was demoralizing. At least the day wasn't a total bust, 6 of those legal sized ones was a good haul for the day. Eating high on the hog that day! Like you, I can't afford to buy them in the store either, but just as well, because a whole lobster would precipitate a major gout attack! Miss eating shell fish! I am enjoying watching you guys on this survival series. As always, stay safe!

Late to the game but that white stuff is actually hemolymph (what most arthropods have instead of blood) and it looks white because that's what happens when you heat the proteins [usually its clear when uncooked i believe]. Perfectly safe to eat if you need the calories and it has a good amount of nutrients too! Good video mate.

The green stuff inside the lobster is known as Tomalley, lobster paste and crab fat, this gooey mass inside the lobster's body (and crabs) cavity is what serves as part of the crustacean’s digestive system. This mass works as the lobster’s liver and pancreas. 🤘🏼
