In day 4 of this survival series we head back to staple foods like alewife or river herring, fish egg and milt and clams in order to stay on top of my calories. After not eating much for the day besides some broth, I nearly quit. This challenge is super hard, much harder than it looks.
Full Season 5 Playlist: • Season 5: The Wilderne...
We also are looking for other wild foods like turkey as it is the spring season. We do manage to get a red squirrel in a catch and cook which we add to our smoked fish.
The goal is to replace any calories we burn foraging for wild foods in order to balance our energy expenditures as modern foragers.
We bait our lobster traps with alewife or river herring which we dip netted the day before. This is all about survival and eating the foods that we can easily forage and scavenge from wild sources. We are really trying to balance our calories eating only wild edibles.
We will show you how to cook and clean the clams and eat the stomach. We will remove the skin and also purge and wash the clams and boil in water.
Malcolm 'The Hidden Woodsman": thehiddenwoods...
Instagram: www.instagram....
The Wilderness Living Challenge is not a "survival challenge," but more like a test of the modern hunter gatherer to sustain himself on wild foods only. We will weight ourselves at the start of the challenge and weight out at the end. If we lose any weight at all, we lose the challenge!
Check out Zach Fowler: • Catch And Cook Alewife...
Follow along as we struggle to get wild foods!
I am joined by Zach Fowler on his home turf in Maine, USA in the spring.
Here, we plan to do Season 5 of The Wilderness Living Challenge. The goal of the challenge is to gain or maintain our body weight eating only the wild food we can collect on site using whatever means necessary.
Winning the Wilderness Living Challenge is harder than it seems.
Season 5: Maine Spring, takes place in Maine, USA with coastal food priorities including fish, clams, crab, seaweed, groundhog, pigeon, turkey, dandelion, cattail, and whatever else is edible! Nothing is off the menu, if it's edible, we'll eat it.
We make use of all the resources in this challenge to meet the demands for calories imposed by the human body!

Hello Mr. Beardsman. I really, really enjoy watching your videos. So even if I focus on some criticism now, please don't get a wrong idea of my view/opinion on your videos, as they are really great. This criticism is supposed to be constructive and most of it is about my gut feelings of the change of your videos. I do not have the time to prove/verify these feelings, but maybe we could discuss these a little bit. When I started to watch this video, I haven't been following your channel for the last two weeks, because I was on vacation. So maybe because of that distance I realized a few things when I started to watch this video: 1) I really enjoy this very slow talking, very patient and calm in the beginning (when you wash your knife). To me it feels like you really take your time for me, the watcher. I actually like when you stop you explanation at 1:01 for a bird joining you at the creek and you telling us about it. Maybe because I live in a really big city with pretty much no nature around me, it is that I enjoy your videos so much. And your calm personality makes it possible for me to be right there with you and to forget the hectic and stressful city live around me (and also my very stressful private live). So for me your videos absolutely do not need to be with a lot of action and "kills". I have a feeling, that you are drifting slowly into the direction of spectacular videos, with something new in every video. I personally do not need that and it was never the reason for me watching you channel. 2) In this context I also noticed, that you do not show as much nature anymore as you used to. In some of your earlier videos you had a lot of sequences where you were just showing the calm lake, the crackling fire and so on. I gave your videos your unique, calm and almost quite character. Another possibility for a "break" of you talking (which is not a bad thing, but I feel it is a little bit too much in your videos lately) could be sequences of you walking through the woods, hunting, etc. and exploring. 3) I also noticed that you do not take as much time for explaining as you used to. For me that was one of the most important things to watch your videos. For example in the video where you dig for clams: Where did you look for them and why? What did you experience when you dug for them and what are the tricks that figured out? For me, that was a video, where a few dudes dig for clams and it was not you and me who go on the beach together and you are teaching me how to do it, or we figure it out together, learn together. In this video I did not feel that I was right there with you. An example for a video where you achieved right that was in the videos where you trapped snowshoe hares. Note: I wrote this at about 6:00. So you actually explained a bit of clam digging later on in this video. So this particular observations might be wrong. So again, this is about my very spontaneous gut feelings, I might be wrong with my observations. So please just read them and make your mind, maybe there is a reason why you change the style of your videos that I am (most likely) not aware of. I just think you should be aware of these changes and what kind of feelings you create in me with your videos. A video I really like (maybe a little bit to much music.) by a close friend of mine, who taught me hunting in the US. He actually enjoys teaching hunting more than actually hunt himself: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eHbclKWkj7Z-i68&has_verified=1

Man when I see a comment like "man you guys should be thriving out there." You can just tell those people have no freaking idea what it takes to to do a challenge as this even with all the tools in the world how much it takes and to not lose weight doing all the running around hunting and gathering and I mean eventually it will even out I guess but is it worth it after that I don't know I just wish people wouldn't be so quick to be like a man that's easy. I think four season 6 and maybe for the rest of the seasons you should take out a KZbinr skeptic I think that'd be pretty fun to watch. You guys are doing great man I got faith in you both. As long as you're having fun doing it nothing else really matters does it? God bless and Godspeed Brothers

I live in North Carolina and there’s so many different things to hunt and lots of different wild fruits and vegetables. You just gotta know what you’re looking for to make sure you don’t eat anything poisonous. Lots of wooded areas out here as well. I always enjoy in the Summer going out into the woods and setting up a camp. If you have anyone in NC, you should totally try the wilderness living challenge here some time.

I haven't had time to watch the video yet, but I will. I just wanted to comment and encourage you, and definitely thank you for making another video AND SERIES where you are suffering and putting in work for youtube viewers like me. Man I respect the hell out of ya, and even at my obese weight I wonder how I could measure up to you guys. Happy (late) Canada Day! Much love and respect from the USA. I wish I had some land for you to utilize for videos I bet you are a great conversationalist in person. I've been watching for quite a while now, and really like your style of videos. I'm not talking trash, but other "survivalist" videos are just too over-edited. Not everything needs cut-scenes and sound effects lol. Your videos are enjoyable and relaxing, "other" videos are sporadic and just feel over polished to the point the luster is gone. Thank you Wooded Beardsman. I sincerely wish I was a part of your "team" if shit does ever hit the fan. You have skills. I bet I could out fish ya tho (JKJK, LOL).

hey dude, you need to put the shellfish in seawater for a few hours and chuck a handful of flour in there to let them sift the sand out. You actually see them start to feed and they start to spit out these sandy mucousy gobs. You have to feed them for a little bit to clear them of sand. You could probably even use cattails or anything starchy. They open their shells and their siphons pop out. I pick cockles and razorclams on the reg. I won't eat them unless I've done this. It turns a sandy inconvenience into a gourmet meal.

I love these videos they're absolutely very informative and very much a learning experience for outdoor living. Eating those fish after you smoke them and then to cook them over the fire, it made the bones in the head edible and brought the oils out which means with the oils more fat intake to your body so that's a plus and a great thing and then also that gray stuff that you ate with the fish milk and the fish eggs sound delicious to me because I love that stuff.

But you are honestly pushing through and sharing the experience. Don’t let this challenge get you down. But if your getting to the point where you are fighting it then it may be time to let it go. We might pout about it but the Chanel will survive. On a side note, as someone who had a wheat allergy set in at 39yo, think celiacs only worse, the corn massa cakes are a good way to get some carbs, especially with some maple syrup. But for me they almost drain more energy digesting than they provide. As stated, famine food, you still need protein and fat along with the cakes.

Make a call or two then shut up and play hard to get they will know where you are from the call and come looking for the new hen in town. Then hopefully meet your lead shot! Meat over the fire! Hope you get one! Love your vids! Also fish swim upstream so when dip netting start from downstream with the net and scoop them up instead of quick stabbing into the water. Hello, I came from Zach Fowler’s channel, love what your doing. I have noticed that in your wilderness living challenges that carbohydrates are a struggle in the wild, to the point were without carbs you’re going in the hole calories earned vs calories burned. My thinking is what if you collected and propagated seeds and plants and follow up when those seeds and plants are ready to harvest. Kind of like the native Americans did were the men hunted and gathered and the women tended the garden. (Not trying to start a gender war) in real life if society falls or shtf (hate that moniker) we would be collecting seeds and propagating plants so that the next year we would have food that would not have to be hunted and gathered, maybe even domesticate some animals to provide a meal. Sorry for the book but it would be neat to test it out.

High tide, if an open high beach, no cliffs, you could harvest clams. Just look for them poking their necks up and grabbing the neck, and grabbing the shell, stopping the foot from digging down through the neck spewing out water and escaping. Time to start grabbing up all those blue/green mussels.

the water the clams are boiled in is a Very tasty addition!, use a ladle/spider to pull the clams out and then use that to Cook other things in like your Veg! Conserves calories otherwise lost, and is a great addition of flavor as well as warming.

Great video! This is one of my favorites so far. There's so many laws here that vary day to day I would starve reading the law book. Looking forward to the next video.
