Giant moose shedding their velvet
Thanks for joining us today for this video. If you haven't subscribed to our channel yet, we'd really appreciate it if you did, especially if you love moose! Today we are exploring the beginning of the rut. Most of the year moose do three things…eat, rest, and move between feeding and resting areas. But Every August something magical happens…The rut! Drop Tine, MisMatch and 22 all make appearances in this video.
The first sign that the rut is kicking in is the shedding of the velvet off their huge antlers. It is fascinating that these animals can grow these huge racks each year but once they are done growing for the season, it’s time for the velvet to come off. That is the start of the rut.
This video takes us through those stages of the shedding process. At 1:06 seconds we see the first hint of the velvet splitting on a tine as shedding is about to begin. At 1:15 seconds we see the same bull the next morning start to rake vigorously to shred his velvet into dangles. And finally at 2:45 seconds we see the same bull (on the left) two days later with a clean rack without any velvet left at all. Some bulls are better at it than others. Some bulls may walk around for weeks with strings of dried velvet hanging from an antler point.
Thanks for watching our channel, we are the husband/wife team of Rick and Libby Libbey, (Libby squared), New Hampshire wildlife photographers (and part time Alaska.) It is our passion to document wildlife of any kind, but moose are definitely at the top. In New Hampshire we spend a lot of our spring/summer hours in kayaks photographing loons and moose in the waters of New Hampshire. And hike many miles in Alaska seeking all manner of wildlife in the fall.

Thanks Boyd. The 22/Mismatch sparring was epic to us. We've never seen Mismatch spar with a dominant bull since his wreck in 2019, never mind fight. Only with younger bulls would he spar. He couldn't risk accidental injury to his right antler. (Broken skull side.) Watching him approach and ask 22 for a spar was amazing to us, and that 22 allowed it and played along without getting out of bed, knowing that would send Mismatch away, really touched us. Of course, once Mismatch got a little into it and straightened his hind legs, well, game over! Time to eat! So that's what they did, they ate side by side. So cool.

That was a great video on showing the Velvet coming off the antlers . Now where those antlers grow fresh velvet , meaning another layer These are such beautiful animals .

The velvet has all the blood vessels and nerve system necessary to build the antler bone beneath it. When the antler/bone is fully grown, the velvet dies. The bull rakes it off to reveal the shiny bone white weapons he grew since the spring. After the rut is over, the bull no longer needs the antler and they get shed by falling off. In the early spring the bull will start the whole process over again, starting with little nubs of velvet covered bone. It's the same for every bull every year. Amazing!

Is velvet itchy when shedding???
@MooseManNaturePhotos
@MooseManNaturePhotos Жыл бұрын
We suspect so, Patricia; as the blood vessels and nerves in the velvet shut off and die, there must be some itch sensation to signal the need to rake. It's so bizarre and cool at the same time, isn't it?

What is purpose of shedding the velvet
@MooseManNaturePhotos
@MooseManNaturePhotos Жыл бұрын
The velvet is dead at this point because the bone (antler) it has been nourishing all spring is done growing. Time to get rid of it and expose those clean, new pair of antlers for the rut.

Actually at the time of shedding it off, the live energy to the antler has shut off, all the nerves have shut off, painless to shed the velvet.

When it’s hanging it does look a little gruesome? Not sure of the purpose of the velvet is though.
@FernCurtis
@FernCurtis Жыл бұрын
Basically, the velvet contains the blood vessels that feed the horns as they grow. Then when they have grown as much as they are going to for that year/season, it is no longer needed. When that happens, at rut season, the blood vessels basically start shrinking and dying. Which in turn means they start cracking. When the horns are still in velvet , they are still soft and fragile, so the bulls don’t fight yet. It is at this point when the velvet starts to crack, that the bulls start “shredding” to get rid of the velvet and the antlers become dry and hard. That is more or less how it works. Libby may be able to add something else to that, possibly.

This looks to be a case of "Mismatch" and his buddy "22". With the usual drudgery of cleaning all that up and off their headgears, these two seem to really be very close friends. I like how "Mismatch" always hangs out with his ol' buddy. The magnificence of the moose is of how intelligent these animals really tend to be. Whilst, all is still a very quiet and calming atmosphere, these two regulars first have to deal with that "itchy" velvet, and then to test those new, blood-red antlers. A little tiny push against his friend "22" at the end, "Mismatch" might've gone a little too far. As you can see, "22" has had enough.
@MooseManNaturePhotos
@MooseManNaturePhotos Жыл бұрын
So true, Dan. This was an epic moment between these two old warrior friends. Just amazing. Mismatch would not fight again after his wreck in 2019 when most of the damage was done to his right side (fractured skull) where the pedicle simply is no longer. How he ever grew such a healthy antler on that side amazed us. He went up to 22 to ask to spar. With 22 in bed. And 22 let him. We had never seen Mismatch even lightly spar with a dominant bull. He couldn't risk getting accidentally injured. We thought it was kind of funny when 22 said, OK, that was one little push too far. We're done here! And after that they went off to eat together. Amazing, fun, and we were touched by this gesture of friendship between these two old bulls. Thank you as always for the comment, Dan. Very insightful.
