You can fish while entirely underwater by using a moon pool.

I learned that the depth truly rules the size and type of fish. After 25 hours of specific fishing, I've ONLY caught the big guys in 50u + depths - even on an empty lure.

Capt Steve caught a large fish in a cave on a gas giant. I found an alluring specimen in a cave. Casted directly over it and caught a colossal shrimp.

I have the same issue. The water pops in and out. I was able to build an above water base under water when it disappeared.

I'm getting the same results as you Capt, 15Us is the deepest. But fishing is not about catching fish, it's about drinking beer by the riverside without being nagged by the wife 😂

I've been using this trick for bigger fish, if you use your terrain manipulator downward as far as you can under your fishing spot to increase the depth, you can increase the size of the fish you will catch, though it's still rather luck based on how far down you will be able to dig.

@hunyadacrazy 15.5u's total is the deepest I have dug to and reached... someone has sent me a location that is 25.5u's on a Gas Giant... also the deepest dug...

I came across my first non gas giant yesterday, it was called "blood giant". It was not that strange of a planet except you know, being gigantic. I struggled finding any big lakes on it, i could only find small lakes barely player deep. And it had a ton of underwater creatures you needed to explore on it that i couldnt find.

Ima need these deep water mechanics worked on. The game cant seem to know when im In or out of water so my sub just drops to the ocean floor. Half the time i can make it back to the surface

I've posted in intersteller index FB group as well as over 30s and another FB group asking for help finding one. I am only missing the one last S class. I've been through well over a thousand bionic lures and still not got the last S class fish.

So….the fish hologram size doesn’t mean anything at all it’s completely random the only stats are changed by the bait used. The holograms are flavor basically to help you know when to reel the fish in.

@WingManFang1 no...they are not... If you see a small hologram eating the bait you get a small fish... If you see a large hologram you catch a large fish...

I've read a post on reddit that said if you find an underground water cavern on a gas giant, you can drill a hole up through the roof, build a deep water chamber and fish down for a greater depth reading. I built an additional chamber on top with one ladder to add a few units, but its still not helping. I'm shit at building, so hopefully the devs will come up with a more reasonable solution.

Nothing to do with the fish hunt, per se but I've been having fun going to Uncharted systems (ones with no info about economy, tech, etc). Finding a lot of exotic planets, many with synthetic life on them. Many of them do have water and I've caught some fish, even on the ones where everything else living was synthetic (I was kind of hoping to catch some robotic fish!) I haven't paid enough attention to remember if any had gas giants in but it might be another avenue to explore.

EDIT: Finding Giant Planets - X and Y are fine - the map is correct... Look for single large planets with more than 2 moons, but it's a Dissonant, rather than Gas Giant system. It will guaranteed to be a Giant Planet of random type. More often than not they will have water. If they do, somewhere they will have deep oceans on them for sure. When you enter the system and scan - it will actually say " Giant". I've had great luck on Giant planets of various types, finding deep oceans on them and finding awesome fishing spots.. but I've not even found water on an actual Gas Giant before! :)

You don’t have to look for more than 2 moons, because I found a paradise giant and it only has one moon.

@ No, you don't HAVE to you are right... but if you see 3 or more moons, then it is almost guaranteed because that is not a normal planet before this update. I probably should have clarified. 👍

This is a easy fix. When your game startes to phase building parts or creatures just to a reload of the save. This has seem to fix the issue for me.

I have also found a frozen giant with five moons and I had to test it but as expected the fish were cold biome not gas giant.

Biggest I’ve caught on the gas giant biome is a large common fish called Plasmatic Squid. Caught in 14U deep with no bait. Best class wise caught is Mandelbrot Worm, small legendary with bionic lure. Can’t find any deep water yet.

Yeah... its like 1 in a 100 catches might be Colossal... and may be 5 in a 100 large from my experience...

Playing in VR is cool till you realize the water textures below the surface are spazzing and blinking out in a way that can cause seizures also for some reason I can’t build anything that doesn’t have a base line snap point, also living ships need to be fixed because they spazz out going in/out of hyper space and there’s way to much Particle pollution that screws with your eyes now. It’s so much worse, like playing in VR on a Failing PS4 again only without the major crashes.

I found a way to catch them if you place a Deepwater chamber and connect a couple underneath it and build ladders down you can go under the bedrock and on the bottom chamber place a moon pool floor and fish it

Sneaky... someone else has told me to glitch in an underwater chamber floating above the planet then put down a moon pool and it thinks your above water...

I find I have a problem with it thinking I'm not above land if you use the sea chambers. If I use the normal above ground chamber then put a mood pool it allows for fishing

It seems like you are correct. The fish you need may only occur on a Gas Giant that has deep water. You have thousands of followers that are exploring the new Purple Star systems and like me, intend to alert you if we find deep water. Maybe there is no such thing in game at this moment, (hopefully HG knows if there is). When I saw surface water on an Icy Giant in a Purple system from space, the water was deep, but apparently not the same biome as a Gas Giant for fishing. I am not using a Playstation and surface water does not vanish. I heard that a large patch was in Experimental though. Good luck Captain. We are all with you. On a related note. You put out a query as to whether anyone has heard from Kurt. Any feedback? I hope he's OK. 🤞

I have found a few planets that are considered giants with deep Ish water however, they are definitely not gas, giants and seem to be just very big versions of normal planets

@ I have been Freighter hopping in Euclid to Purple stars, just to see if I can find a new Paradise, or anything else interesting. I found a mildly toxic Relic planet, (absolutely covered with ruins). I found a Gasless Giant! By that I mean, it is a Giant with no atmosphere. No cold, nor hot. No storms, no fauna and the only flora are hazardous plants. The surface textures look like it would have been an Ice Giant if it had weather. Lots of minerals and lots of stars in the sky, day and night.
