Really, Mars isn't having a discernable effect. The paper either misunderstood the Myr Cycle, or more likely the editors were sloppy about removing the ambiguous phrasing in the paper. Mars is ~6.2 * 10^23 kg in mass, and keeps a distance of about 225 * 10^9 m away from Earth. By the inverse square law, Mars has about the same effect on Earth as a smallish orca swimming in the ocean. And there are a lot of orca, and larger, things in the seas. Elephants on land, too. Dinosaurs, as well. Any actual impact of Mars would be lost in the noise. It is likely the results are connected to Myr in some non-Marsy way. Though yes, solar system is connected. But Jupiter? So much farther away, so much less influence. People who make these aphysical astronomical planetary claims are very bad at math and science.

Speaking of river turtles, there was news here in Australia that an echidna was caught in the act and filmed raiding the nest of a critically endangered white-throated snapping turtle (Elseya albagula) and eating the eggs. This is a first ever reporting of an echidna eating anything except insects (ants and termites specifically) but could explain the decline of the turtles.

Snorkelling on a reef is all you need to know about the noise. It is indeed surprisingly noisy. The wash of the waves is a minor part of that noise. Now I am waiting for a fossil turtle to be named A'Tuin! (preceding that with "Great" might be asking too much) To properly fit Terry Pratchett's description, it would be only proper for this to be a very large species. You are getting better and better at the presentation task Emelia. 🙂

The fact that Mars is able to influence Earth's deep sea ocean currents has some fascinating implications, and I can't wait to see what answers (and questions) more research about it will yield. But even more than that, I think it also has some inherent implications regarding life on other planets, or at the very least how other planets might influence the climate on planets where life is present.
