Giant rays leap out of the water

In the Sea of Cortez, giant oceanic rays migrate in their thousands. The spectacle is taken to new heights when some of the rays take to the air, leaping out of the water and momentarily 'flying' two metres above the surface.

Excellent video.. Some of my favorite dives have been 'local' up "North" (Baracuda, and further) ripping in the currents right next to Eagle Rays... However, I've never seen one with my own eyes that would be close to a ton in weight.. Of course, Manta Rays around the Hawaiian Islands are very much larger.. I could absolutely imagine them waying 2000 lbs.. They also have wing spans upwards of 14' across.. Still, amazing coverage.. Out of all the times diving with them, I never witnessed any of them breaking the surface, but lots of other people had / have.. Miss diving there and so many other places.. Eagle Rays are my absolute famorite in the ocean.. Outside of Orcas.. Literally 100's of dives with them at a variety of depths.. It never got old!

0:54 "Weighting more than a tone"?! I don't think that is correct. Manta Rays can weight more than that, but these Mobula Rays aren't that heavy

Hi, these are mobula rays (apologies, the original title was a bit misleading). Some species of mobula rays do grow to over a ton.

Wrong species of ray on the title, they are called Mobula Rays which is basically a small Manta

Hi, this is normal behaviour for rays, although the exact reasons are not fully understood. It's believed to play a role in courtship and may also help rid the animals of parasites. Or maybe they are just having fun :)
