One of the greatest anime series ever made, without exaggeration. Deliver us from darkness, once more.

dude, just watch it, i was aprehensive at first, then i watched it, and holy shit, best anime experiences ive ever had. realise its one of those things where you kinda have to toss tendancies to knit pick details out the window in order to enjoy it fully [talking to eachother over great distances and being able to hear it as if they were right nexto them]. but seriously.... its worth it....

Easily the most epic sound track. This song has the most impact, I think.

I remember watching this scene in the anime. I thought it was a rather startling artistic choice. Very compelling though.

You described that beautifully. You have a major gift with words, and you should seriously be satisfied with your existence. On my watch list, love things that have a deceptive atmosphere and from your description, definitely want to watch it. I have it downloaded on my computer so I'll sit down and watch it soon. Thanks!

Giant Robo doesn't really touch upon metaphysics or existentialism: it strays more to the "pulpy sci-fi" side of things (a black attaché case is a major McGuffin in the early episodes, and the old "mad scientist's daughter" trope is used). There is a lot of well-used pathos and drama in this series, though, and it's not afraid of setting action aside to set the mood. Really, this show cannot be recommended enough. The biggest flaw is that the series looks a lot sillier than it really is.

@frankenvonvogler interesting... but SOMEbody had to sing it. - who?? I bought an (expensive!) Japanese soundtrack CD with a different cover than this years ago, and to my disappointment, UFL was not on it. Also, notice that the song only has lyrics in Episode 1 (I think?) The later episodes have instrumental reprises. We need another set of GR OVA's! Use "cel shading" ;-) How could they just leave us hanging like that? There are plenty of anime that have "ripped it off" since then! ha ha

Ah, sounds good then, I've actually torrented it onto my computer and plan to watch it within the next week or so. But thanks for telling me all of this. :)

I am rather curious about this anime. I have heard many great things about it, but I am truly wondering whether it is worth it for me to watch. I am a fan of tragedy, sci fi, existential and fantasy works injected with realism and metaphysical components. At the same time, I am also one who makes attempts to reserve all judgement for something until I have fully experienced it myself. So please, if you could, do enlighten me on the happenings of this work. Thanks one and all! :)

Isn't it also an homage to the animation style and creations of Yasuhiro Imagawa? The setting is very "retro-futuristic" (which is apparently a thing), the characters are surprisingly complex. The themes are interesting, but I love how they amalgamated sci-fi with wuxia adventure, and a whole lot more into a very satisfying mix! And the music is simply beautiful!

I have a Japanese (?) CD of the sound track which DOESN'T include this? Somehow it sounds different, but maybe I just don't remember. Who is is the singer / recording? Is it Pavoroti as someone said?
