The head director of the series, Yasuhiro Imagawa, is a fan of grand opera. Though there is no singing the staging, the visual direction, the monologues and the score are all pretty much inspired by this, which is really why its so over-the-top and tries to unsubtly deal with grand themes in such melodramatic ways. This is also what makes it so unique.
@Xplosive597 жыл бұрын
The lack of establishing the characters relationships, personalities and powers is part of the big appeal of Giant Robo. The director purposely meant it to feel like you are jumping into the show mid series like you would have back when he was growing up in the 60s watching Astro Boy and Tetsujin, before. The fact that it starts in the middle of a fight and ends on a character we have no knowledge of being introduced really drives this home. Giant Robo is a masterpiece of this kind of storytelling.
@peterstangl82954 жыл бұрын
I guess i kinda see where he's coming from, but yeah, still a dick move to the audience. And what's the point really? If this was truly just a one-off then sure, why not, but since apparently this was meant to be a proper series (if Pan is not mistaken) then this just seems needlessly confusing and alienating. Keep in mind, i haven't seen it, maybe it makes more sense when you do. I was actually thinking about watching it, though honestly if it's basically just the middle of a story with no beginning or end, then... i dunno.
@superarcade6434 жыл бұрын
@@peterstangl8295 in my opinion it makes the storytelling more realistic i dont have to know the extended backstory of each character to feel with them in any situation aslong as they are good characters regardless
@KeyleeTamirian4 жыл бұрын
That's what i love about it! There's a special thrill about watching a show from the middle, when you don't know who the characters are, what's their goal and what is going on. It turns the first time watching into a HUGE mystery. And then, watching the story beginning would feel like you're watching a prequel. It makes watcher intrigued not only for the continuation... but also for the beginning. "Don't show, Don't tell, let Assume" is what i love in older stories.
@peterstangl82954 жыл бұрын
I guess i'm alone on this then. I dunno, i sorta see the appeal, but it's not really my cup of tea.
@KeyleeTamirian4 жыл бұрын
@@peterstangl8295 For a white i did not see the appeal. But then i remembered when i watched shows as a kid, when my first episode was not the first episode of the show, but something much later. Like, when i started watching Shaman King it was the Faust arc, so the beginning of this anime was a mystery to me.

I started NOT to write anything because you had 1k comments. I figured that SOMEONE must have explained... but you're comments became to irritating, so I had to say something. These characters are based on wuxia tales. There mostly Chinese in origin, and are KNOWN to this audience, kinda like if someone says "Hercules" to a Western audience, that audience would immediately think of strength. It's stuff that's not explained because it would be like taking time to explain Kryptonite. I think today Giant Robo would be written differently because the audience is international. The audience for this show is Japanese/Asian first. Distribution wasn't what it is now.

RebelTaxi , Glad I could "enlighten" you. 😊 I just happened to stumble upon your video. I LOVE the live action show from the 60's that was the inspiration. I won't say based because it is VERY different. Apparently the studio could only use the robot and kid from the original show/manga; the were allow to use characters from his OTHER manga. That was a disappointment for me. It would have been nice to see the original characters animated. I'll have to look through your posts to see what else you reviewed. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

Actually Pan, the manga 20th Century Boys gives a interesting view on the Mech/Robot discussion... *Mecha/Mech:* it can think on its own, but it has a cockpit, therefore is controlled from the INSIDE and will be a mech as long as that possibility exists. So things like Big O, Gundam, Eva, etc. *Robot:* it either thinks on its own or is controlled from the OUTSIDE. Making Big Robo and Iron Giant fall into this since you can't get inside them.

The toll Daisaku’s responsibility takes on him is a major undercurrent and is referenced in almost every episode; it’s driven home by just how gawd-awesomely powerful ROBO is shown to be, and how BIG FIRE is always trying to capture or kill him, because ROBO is THE ONLY THING slowing them down...HOW DID YOU MISS THAT...??? Even after the ‘big reveal’ during the battle in the last episode...??? Plus, the entire series is about the burdens father lay on their children, and how that effects them...

I'm not sure what has been lost between 90s anime and modern shows, but there's very few modern anime that appeal to me in the least. I guess part of it is the bland character designs, the focus on slice-of-life boredom, the lack of expressive facial expressions, the overuse of computers in animation, the loss of a sense of adventure... I could go on.

Oh yeah, and the lack of diversity in art style.

Sounds like a bunch of hoopla to justify not trying out newer shows to be honest.

For anyone who doesn't know, Pan uploaded the review on Sunday but unlisted it. He then posted it on 4chan's /co/, where they were ripping him a new one. The video was up for a bit before Pan deleted it /maybe/ because every comment was telling him to stay off /co/ and that he was a shill. boards.4chan.org/co/thread/96709574

Wait, why the hell are you showcasing irrelevant pages from Shin Getter Robo at 9:24? Giant Robo also takes core inspirations from wuxia movies, which is why almost all characters have set of superhuman powers.

Thank you for bringing up The Big O. In second grade I used to watch Toonami and I distinctly remember the show. It was so cool and I loved the style, but I for the love of all that is holy, I couldn't find it anywhere
