The original term is a Navy job title for the guy who controls the landing and offloading of ships on a landing beach. I suspect that's where they took it from. The Beachmaster is the Alpha elephant seal and he loudly and strenuously bullies anybody who's not supposed to be on HIS beach.

I used to live near there, and there's a beach a few miles north where some of the males hang out after they lose one of these fights. They mellow out after awhile, but when they first arrive they are _seriously_ annoyed. Got chased off the beach by a new arrival once. Fortunately they can't climb the cliffs.
