I've never had moths but when I was younger, my dad and I would go out to the corn fields and rescue the monarch caterpillars before heavy machinery would ruin the milkweed. We had a mini butterfly "shed" that was screened on all sides where we grew milkweed and gave the little friends a home until they pupated and popped out as beautiful monarchs! In September 2019, my parents found a Ceceopia caterpillar in the road, and brought it to me on a leaf. Nobody tried to touch it because it looked so scary, but we looked it up and figured we were fine. Besides being so big, those caterpillars WILL NOT LET GO. Had it for two days before it started spinning a cocoon. We wintered it over in our unheated garage, and it emerged in May. We left it outside that whole night, and woke up to it maiting(ours was female), and it had laid 218 eggs by the next night. I've looked for them everywhere since.

Way back in the 1970's there was TIEGS which was the Teenage International Entomology Group which was a part of the 4H clubs. They had a trading post where you could get ova and pupa. I raised Indian Moon moths basically an Asian Luna moth with a larger food plant choice, and Chinese oak silkworms another species that was easy to rear. For any one want some more details on rearing these guys you might want to dig up the book MOTHS AND HOW TO REAR THEM by Paul Villard. It is out of print but you can find used copies on Amazon that aren't insanely priced. Getting exotics moths or how to give nightmares to APHIS! I saw on e bay somebody offering Hercules beetle larvae something that would give my local plant inspector in Florida nightmares.

As a Lepidoptera expert (one who also has raised multiple giant silk moths) I would rate these categories: Handleability: 6/10 Easy to handle as adults but can fly away as mentioned and tear easily. As larvae you shouldn’t touch them very much unless transporting the, because they can absorb germs from your hand and get sick. Care: 8/10 The only reason I rated this a eight is because some species are much harder to raise and require more needs. There are a lot of giant silk moths that are easy to raise though. Hardiness: 8/10 As adult moths, I would rate this a 4/10 because of their incredibly short lives, but a lot of these species spend long moments in the larvae and pupae stage. I know a few species that can stay in their cocoons for up to 6 years (that’s a long time!) Availability: 6/10 Unless you want to go through the diapause/wintering process for the cocoons I would suggest to get them during the spring and summer months to shorten the hassle and wait, but technically you can get them at any time you’d want Upfront costs: 7/10 If you want a good deal, you must need to know where to buy, as some stores can charge high prices that aren’t worth it. If you’re in America, Asia, or Africa, you may be able to find these easily without a price. Overall: 8/10 Fun and easy pets that are beautiful as well!

Would you ever consider doing a video on keeping tobacco hawk moths? I know a few things are different with them as they have a proboscis for eating, live a (liiitttle) bit longer and cannot be released into the wild due to their invasive nature. Moths are like nocturnal fluffy butterflies that are a lot of the time prettier than actual butterflies and I love them

They are awesome, I raised cecropia moths and luna moths. Sweet gum tree is usually a safe bet as many giant silk moths love it.

I’ve been waiting for this one for a while, all my Luna and Polyphemus just emerged and I’m thrilled to have a Clint video to watch with them during their brief time lol

I have a bunch of Elephant Hawk Moth cocoons in my shed! Raised them from little caterpillars and hopefully will see the moths next year. Best part is they're native to the UK, so I can release them and hopefully kickstart many generations in my garden.

My wife and I occasionally raise tomato hawk moths. One did not develop its wings properly and had to stay with us. I fed it every day with a syringe and it learned to work with me. I'll never forget him

2:60 I started to panic. I was 100% sure that moth was a goner 🤣
