Haha I love that he immediately pointed out that isopods aren’t insects. I have a strong psychological reaction to a lot of insects but I keep isopods. My mom thinks I’m crazy but I’m like “they’re crustaceans!” It’s kind of a voluntary exposure therapy. I really enjoy having living terrariums to mimic a tiny ecosystem. Isopods turned out to be a great and accessible option for that. I now have porcellio laevis dairy cows and armadillidium vulgare T+ albino. Some of my dairy cows escaped this summer when it was insanely humid, which was disconcerting 😳 I shored up their terrarium a little better but I still feel kinda bad since they ultimately probably didn’t make it. Live and learn. I still love my podlings! And I won’t forget walking upstairs to go to bed and spotting an isopods casually climbing down the stairs out of the corner of my eye. I was like “Oi! Where do you think you’re going?? Out for a night on the town?!” And he’s like “don’t mind me, mom, don’t mind me….” I picked him up and plunked him back in the terrarium, cheeky boy

I agree, Isopods are the greatest lil' things! I actually accidentally discovered they're great for vivariums when I put a handful from outside into a 30g Hermit Crab enclosure I had years ago. Some of them drowned when the enclosure flooded (sad times), but many of them thrived! This was when I was very young and thought that Isopods just immediately died off...because they always did. It wasn't 'til years later that I found out they have gills and that some can even survive in aquariums for weeks!

I have 5 colonies of isopods. A couple of them are ones that were shown in the video. I love watching them run around. It's great! 😊

Okay, this video has convinced me to one day get Isopods. They are such gorgeous little animals! My favorite is without a doubt Porcellio expansus, very pleasing pattern and a resemblance to Trilobites just awe struck me.

depending on the species of isopods sex can be determined in a couple of ways. One way is by the shape of their inner segmental plates(the ones on their "belly"), males will often have their last pair of legs be larger than females, or you could look for a brood pouch that only the females will have. This grows in between their 1st and 4th pair of legs. Some spieces also color differences between sexes.

I'm 100% certain that I have a bunch of dwarf whites in my indoor greenhouse. I was looking for a colony to purchase, but now that I know that I might already have a colony of my own, I just need to make them a habitat. Very informative and entertaining, thanks!

I'm not the biggest fan of isopods in general but I really like the Dairy Cows. Also I recently donde out about pseudarmadillo spinosus, which are now by far my favorite isopods

I keep Isopods in my land snail tanks. They are delightful and do multiply with enthusiasm. Mine love leaves, vegetables, and snail waste. My Isopods are orange, white and some common grey which I found outside and brought in for winter. It is nice to see what is available, because I am setting up another snail tank.

i never thought I would find them so interesting. You kicked me right back to my childhood days where we would make them roll up and play with them. My favourite were the red ones and the ducky. Isopods seem to be one of the most peaceful of the "creepy crawlies".

Since you asked, I was a fan of the Zebra and the Rubber Ducky Isopods. Thank you so much for posting this video and for hosting someone as enthusiastic as you are about one of the groups of the animal kingdom. It's nice to see people who like things that others might misunderstand.

I would totally have isopods if it wasn't for getting a license for every state you want to ship them too, that just complicates selling the extra ones I'm bound to have.
@katelillo19323 жыл бұрын
Maybe you could sell them to the pet/fish stores in your state instead?

How exactly do you obtain a license for this stuff and how old do you have to be?
