I can't believe it's been nearly 6 years (2,105 days) since I made this terrarium! It feels like just yesterday. I had a lot of fun with this one and I'm excited to share the progress. In some ways I wish that I would have left it alone, but I know it will look like that again in no time. Let me know what you think and have a great weekend!

I love long-term terrariums. But I think you were right in trimming/cleaning after four years. Naturalistic is awesome, but if the plants can't get enough light or you can't see in, it defeats the dual purpose of working well and you enjoying it. Wonderful work as always!

I suppose one of the great aspects of having a KZbin channel for content like this, is that you have a huge history and an archive of information on your work, that you can you can refer back to should you need to, for yet another future project. Things that you yourself may have forgotten about, things you may like to remind yourself on what your thought process was like at the time or just seeing how far you've come. Great stuff, this is easily one of my favourite channels on scapes and ecosystems.

It so doesn't sound stupid if you didn't feel like a proud father you wouldn't put you heart and soul into everything you do for these dear and unique animals. I love that you watched and learned what Sampson really needs, we all learn by experience how each of our own individual creatures behave and what they truly need. I have several tanks a Koi pond and have owned several lizards, birds, fish and of course cats and dogs along the way and each has been a truly wonderful learning experience. I try to give them all the best I can. I so appreciate you and all you do! You have so inspired me to do even more for my creatures! And you many times have shown me the way!

Have you ever considered culturing fungi to add to the ecosystems? I'm currently reading Suzanne Simard's 'Finding the mother tree' and can't help but wonder how different kinds of fungi would work in a small ecosystem like these terrariums, like what effects they might have on growth and decomposition, whether they would have altered the success or failure of certain plants survival. Really interesting stuff! Love to see you revisit an old favourite and to see it still going is wonderful!

i really appreciate this vid and i hope you do more like it. Im so tired of fake terrarium BS that looks amazing when its first made, but quickly dies or turns ugly. A terrarium is a living thing its not a painting, its meant to grow and evolve over time. Ive found that its not very easy to actually make a terrarium thrive over a long period of time, and i appreciate you mentioning that several species died out.

I can still only get syngonium, frittonias, hypoestes and moss to survive more than a month in a jar. This looks amazing and gives me hope that I can one day get a creeping vine to take hold :')

my first and best one was one where spiders, rolie polies and a lot of other stuff survived 6 months together with a huge plant, until brown mold killef everything, even itself after a while.
@beastamer1990s
@beastamer1990s Жыл бұрын
@@klippschliefer4968 did you have springtails? I've never had a mold issue with springtails except one time when I used a stick that was too fresh (not completely dried) Helps to boil your hardscape for a few minutes too before putting it in. But any live/fresh wood is bound to grow mold, and once mold starts the springtails can't do much.
@klippschliefer4968
@klippschliefer4968 Жыл бұрын
springtails where already in the soil, since i used earth from the woods. The srange thing was that the mold started after 6 months, so it where already in a good balance, and no mold was there until the end. So no idea what happened.

I literally only managed to get a small aloe vera to survive in a large jar full of springtails and rolly pollies. The rolly pollies devoured every other plant I put in there, all except the aloe vera which is still growing (no idea how. there is a huge lack of light.) I do not have a green thumb, it would appear. Not even mold or algae grows in my jars. Everything dies except the springtails and rolly pollies.

It’s interesting that remember how difficult it was to make a terrarium in a 5 gallon water bottle for the office before they became plastic they were often used. I kept it in a niche right behind the office water cooler for everyone to watch as a group and changed. I’m thinking now of buying some aquarium plants and growing them immersed in 10 gallon tanks since I can get them for such a good price, I will have to resort to plastic on the top until I can afford those glass lids. I can get a 10 gallon tank for $10 on sale but the lid for the tank is $24.
