I appreciate your candor, and you experience! I still like my SON dynamo hub with a new Cing Plug6 Plus, charging from the battery in the stem. It keeps up the Garmin and iPhone well, at 7 km/hr. Battery banks as well for the bigger devices.

7:14 I usually use the solar panel attached to the handlebar bag and connected to the Powerbank (50.000 maps) I don't care much if it charges to its maximum capacity because in the end it stays there all day and still does its job

yeah same. the angle is really not that important. i use a similar one and just throw it across the luggage rack and even on semi-sunny days it easily charges the powerbank enough to fully charge my phone overnight

I have a dynamo hub that came with the touring bike set-up. I don’t use it for charging BUT I use it to keep both a front and rear lights running. Great for safety both during the day but ALWAYS have light during dusk and night/early morning riding. It’s (dynamo hub) there so one less charge to worry about. And it works great for this!

Yes I agree and as I'm usually too slow to keep a battery charged in general 😆so just use it for my lights. My bike has a dyno hub and with lights it's fantastic, the lights are German made AXA 70 and they have some kind of power storage inside them that allow the lights to stay on for about 4-5minutes after you come to a stop which is a good safety factor and i run my lights all day as it's surprising how visual you are to oncoming traffic than if you don't have them on at all.

Just fitted an SP dynamo with B&M lights to my Brompton (always on, fit and forget). I think too many people try to get more than one capability out of each device, plus the manufacturer charts for power delivery don’t take consideration actual riding conditions, your fitness and weather conditions on the day, producing too many variables to be reliable. I have yet to tour, but I would use: dynamo for visibility and safety to other traffic, solar panel for charging powerbanks and powerbanks for charging devices (phone, gps, cameras).

A useful video thanks, especially the section on solar. Just a tip. Powerbanks have changed dramatically in the last couple of years. There is new rapid charge technology for power banks, and devices. This includes power banks that will also rapid charge a device (if it is a rapid charge device). There are 150+W wall chargers. It was possible to buy a 20 000 mAh battery that fully charges in about 2 hrs, possibly faster now. There are also multi voltage in and out to/from powerbanks. Most new powerbanks are USB C in and USB C out., USB C out gives faster charging. I have also seen powerbanks over 60 0000 mAh that fully charge in about 6 hours. My fast charge phone charges in about 30mins, and the pro version will charge fully in under 20 mins, and these are two year old Xiaomi phones, so I am sure the prices for this tech is still coming down. With solid state batteries entering the market, who knows what the next generation of batteries and powerbanks will be like.

From my experience, I say use a dynamo hub for lighting (Son 28 hub is superior for that, and Son's Edellux 2 light is amazing), so you don't have to recharge ligjts. For charging devices use powerbanks I would say. Charge them whenever you can, and use them wisely, by which I mean to try and limit the use of devices. I was able to charge some of my devices via my "bumm e-werk", even though i was riding three mountain-passes during the last three days. It does charge below 15km/h, but then it's obviously not as quick. Plus you can adjust the output to exactly what your device needs (a powerbank is still recommended). But i'm glad i was able to fix the cable for my solar panel today. It gives me about 5 more charges of my phone on my powerbank and the rest is charged via dynamo.

I recently tried a fast-charging power plug (65w) and fast-charging power bank (Anker Prime 12,000 mAh with 65w recharging) on a trip and enjoyed the speed. A power bank with a screen that shows wattage, charging speed, and estimated time also helps a lot to plan your time. As for the ports, I switched everything to USB-C and now it’s the only cable I carry.

Great electronic overview. I've run SON hubs since 1999 and mainly for a constant taillight I don't need to worry about going dark and a headlight when needed, plus charging of the power bank (not the phone or Wahoo directly). You're totally right about fast charging plugs and cables! The drag is minimal with SON hubs, and Shimano/SP hubs might be cheaper, but don't seem to last as long. My oldest SON hub is 25yo and still works well.

I have the same power setup: 1 x 20.000, 2 x 10000, just because my navigation app and my geocaching app consume endless amounts of power. I use the phone camera just for occational snapshots as normal, but I don't take videos all the time or vlogs. In the summer I also have a solar panel with me. (very similar to yours, but some years older - maybe I should replace it, technology is advancing quickly. I was pleasantly surprised that IT ALSO WORKS WHEN IT'S CLOUDY. When it was sunny I was able to charge ~20-30% of the 10.000 power bank per day; when it was cloudy 10-20% - better than nothing... I simply attached the panel to the top of my panniers (it doesn't cost any more than if I pack it into my panniers), so the angle of incidence was probably rarely optimal. But since it was always attached to the outside of the bike, I was able to align and use it better during breaks. With a POWERFUL(!) FAST CHARGER AND CABLE, I was able to charge a lot more during a break in a restaurant, beer garden, cafe and even ice cream parlor. (I've gotten into the habit of just asking EVERYWHERE.) Electricity is expensive there because you have to eat something..."There ain't no such thing as a free lunch" 😉 On a long-distance trip, I would also take a day off on a sunny day just to charge all the power banks with the solar panel. It's a disgrace that engineers haven't yet invented a better way to generate electricity from the hub dynamo. No one worldwide seems to have any serious interest in it. These few cycle tourists... let them see how they get on... And since e-bikes with "endless electricity" are flooding the market, the need is drastically decreasing. The EU has been working on a law for some time that will force cell phone manufacturers to make batteries in smartphones replaceable, as it was "normal" in the past. When this is finally implemented (like the requirement for a universal USB-C charger, which even Apple had to bow to), you can just take a few spare batteries with you and everything will be so easy ... Dynamo - excellent for lights saves so much charging when you have normal lights on your bike they burn a lot of power so dynamo lights are such a great alternative. I have raced Ultra Distsnce using the dynamo for all my lighting. I use KLITE from Australia very bright and rear red is on all the time for very little power use. Charging - ANKER make a great device, I used for 4 years on and off ( i have not ridden for as many years as Lara in one go ). Batteries - look up NITECORE GEN 3 20,000mah they are great and small Too.

I ride an Omnium Cargo, and I started with a 12w (5V) Solbian "Energy Flyer", which has it's own MPPT controller (much better than a PWM controller). I now have a 23w (12/24v) Solbian All-in-One mated to a 2x 18W motorcycle USB charger. The panel has around 24 percent efficiency, so it is small for it's power output, and the MPPT controller makes it less sensitive to partial shading To stiffen up the panel to make it last longer, I glued some square tubes (round inside) to the bottom on it to help with the rigidity. I only carry one powerbank (a nitecore Summit 20000), and no Dynamo. The good thing about my setup as a "system", is that it is always connected and producing power (the cargo platform allows this), which in turn means I have more power than I'll ever need, despite carrying lots of electronics.

I would also add that the dynamo hubs have a lot of resistance. They feel like you have completely destroyed wheel bearings and/or dragging brakes. The Scott bike I have been using for bikepacking trips came with a Shimano dynamo hub and I replaced the wheels with non-dynamo wheels. With modern led lights using so little current, it seems like a rechargeable battery powered led headlight with the option to charge with a powerbank is a better way to go for most applications. Lael riding all night at speed might be an exception.

Shimano dynamos are cheaper but have indeed a sensible resistance, supply less electricity power and in order to get it you need to ride faster. I switched to a Son dynamo and now it is much, much better.

Yes! For example the “regular” charges are at a minimum. There are chargers that output 100, 140 maybe more. Anker power banks take advantage of these. The cable also needs to be rated as high as possible - fastest are the usb-c to usb -c. The good thing is your devices don’t have to match these high watts, as they will only draw what they are factory set to do. For that reason it’s a better idea to charge your battery banks through high speed and simultaneous your phone from the power bank as a phone almost always charges slower.

It really depends on what kind of person u are, your budget and also the quality of the hub. I said that I don’t like hubs that much but after reading so many comments on different hub brands I might give "son" another go!

I use the Cycle2Charge Ahead headset to charge my phone and a small powerbank on the go. However, the only device I use on tour is my phone. For more power-demanding devices this might not be a good way.

I am more a fair weather biketourer. In the summer I use a 15W Solar panel charger on top of my panniers, charging a 10k nitecore powerbank while cycling. If fully charged, I change it to my 2nd 10k nitecore and connect the full one to my phone for offline routing. Up to now, this combo delivers me more power than I need. But I have no drone etc. Good to hear, my decision not to buy a hub dynamo was right. I do fast charging in restaurants when I am on hiking tours.

@@JuliDuli44 If you do A-LOT of biking, bikepacking, or bike touring don’t discount a dynamo hub especially for running your lights. They can be exceptionally useful in running your front and rear lights so you don’t need to constantly recharge or replace batteries. The “energy” the dynamo provides for all ways on safety running of the lights and night/early morning light-up help can be well worth it!

I think dynamos are pretty redundant these days. Modern smartphones, like OnePlus, charge at up to 100 watts. A full 6,000Mah charge can be had in 35 minutes. Same with power banks (my 65w 20000Mah powerbank charges in about 2 hours). If you're going into the wilds, just add another powerbank (250 grams or so). My mini Dell laptop, phone & Neo drone are all USB-C...so if I take them on a particular trip, I can easily keep them all charged...and then top up quickly in a shop, visitor centre etc.

Hi!!! I’ve too a hub dynamo son28 and it's not great... it doesn't even keep the phone charged when I listen to music while riding even at 20km/h minimum. However I have a "klite ultra race" kit which is supposed to be the most reliable. The only useful thing is the light because it shines like a fire! but 😏 you still have to ride at night 😅 So like you, I bought a big pb of 25k and 3 of 10k that I recharge in supermarket, bar or Warmshowers.

​@@Nomad_E-Bikemany dynamo chargers are made with the absolute minimum needed to convert the dynamo output into 5V for the USB. Something that a beginner in electronics can do with 2-3$ worth of components. Yet, they cost a fortune. The performance of such a converter is terrible. A good one should be designed with dynamo specifics in mind. You mentioned klite lights. Do you use their charger as well? It's one of those. The busch & muller chargers - e-werk and usb-werk are similarly bad. There is one called "Forumslader". It's German and the designer has definitely put a lot of effort into making it as powerful as possible. For example, the klite charger struggles to produce over 3W of power and you need to ride with over 25km/h for that. At that speed, forumslader produces over 10W.

I'm not sure that you need to cycle that fast for a hub dynamo to be effective. I have powered my lights with a hub dynamo for many years, and the lights come on, and are bright, at 10kph. I'm not sure if things have changed recently, but buying an adapter that converts 6V AC to 5V DC was not cheap - and they mostly only allowed you to use either the lights or the charger.

@@GeekonaBike You’re really not providing enough pedal power to make it work. The positive use for a dynamo hub is to constantly use/run your front and rear lights for both safety and darkness. The best is her idea of the solar panel to charge the power bank esp at “camp”.

From my recent research, hub dynamos usually put put about 6v x 1A max,,which is only 6watts. So a solar panel on a bad day is still likely to be more beneficial, for me anyway. If you run a solar panel and a small battery charge controller, there shouldnt be a issue with a solar setup for bike touring.

@@giantcheerio I'm finding there is only very little output from a dynamo in comparison to solar. I'm still researching further. Today's devices require such a large power need. In the 70s a dynamo was ok as it just generated enough power to maintain two 6v globes for bike lights. The dynamos of today are not really putting out much more than that of the 70s wheel friction running ones back then. It comes down to physical size. To generate ideal needed power for today's average phone the dynamos need to be at least twice the size just to maintain the phones charge while using the phone. No dynamo today that I've looked at can cope with that. Let alone also charge other devices of similar requirements in power needs. Work out the watt hours all your devices need for a full charge, then the watt hours any dynamo puts out and you'll see they don't meet anywhere near what is perceived they can.
