An interesting question raised by Hume was, " Is it possible to be a dick and a fanny at the same time?" . This guy shows that it is.

@HolidayFortnight ---Would not a lack of ethical "absolutes" result in chaos?

So how should I allow my reason dictate my morality? I'm trying to understand the example about turning in the wallet, and the person who turned it in responds, "It was the right thing to do." How would that said person respond if his reason dictated him to turn in the wallet?

Distinguishing between "natural" virtues (if such even exist) and artificial virtues has been attempted for centuries with no conclusive result.

So morality is not rationally based, being a "natural" virtue, but justice as an "unnatural" virtue is rational? If even that one element of our social fabric in Hume's conception is not rational, but arbitrary, then I cannot see the value in his philosophy, particularly for a society with a basic rule of law, which necessitates the acceptance of ethical absolutes, such as property rights.

Today, as in the past, most philosophers agree that the ultimate standard of ethics is whim and the battle is only over whose whim: one's own or society's or the dictator's or God's. Whatever else they disagree about, today's moralists agree with Hume that ethics is a subjective issue and that three things barred from its field are: reason, mind, and reality. If you wonder why the world is now collapsing to a lower and ever lower rung of hell, this is the reason!

Did Hume ever finish his History of England?

I find it ironic that Hume is on this channel, considering he would label Austrian Economic theory as little more than "sophistry and illusion."

lol you troll. Wha'd ya do, take a poll of "most philosophers" who then said the ultimate standard of ethics is whim. . . ? Where'd you come up with that broad, sweeping statement babe?

to me there's several issues here.first of all the Golden Rule applies, this article completely ignores all the religious wars and conquest for land control over the centuries.it also avoids the oppression of England..it avoids slavery world wide but specifically the USA.this is just the tip of the iceberg.to me a pretty myopic viewpoint for a world class philosopher.
