Destinazione Hiroshima oggi e già si capisce che non sarà una normale giornata in bici. Lungo la strada c'è un corteo di protesta, però non si capisce se questa gente sia contro il nucleare in genere o se si tratti di una manifestazione per la pace. Ma, a parte questo, Hiroshima vuole dimenticare la bomba e lo fa con la pacatezza e l'operosità tipica dei giapponesi. Percorriamo in silenzio i suoi viali curati tra il museo, le bancarelle e la celebre fiamma della pace che brucia incessantemente dal 1964 con l'impegno di mantenerla accesa finché tutte le armi nucleari non saranno scomparse dalla terra. Ogni commento è retorico. Eppure questa parte del Giappone, segnata dall'eredità della bomba atomica, è spettacolare. Dalle alture di Kure si ammira un panorama fantastico di boschi a perdita d'occhio e sul mare si scorge Myajima, la piccola isola considerata una divinità dalla tradizione shintoista, che per secoli ha ospitato solo animali selvatici ed un sommo sacerdote. Icona dell'isola, e di tutto il Giappone, è il suggestivo Itsukushima Shrine, più noto come Torii fluttuante sull'acqua. Per la natura divina del luogo, sull'isola non si nasce nè si muore e non vi sono cimiterì nè reparti di maternità. Qui non si abbattono gli alberi ed è vietata la caccia. Sull'isola infatti vivono protetti tantissimi cervi che familiarizzano, anche troppo, con i locali ed i numerosi turisti. E sembrano ormai degli zombie!
Destination Hiroshima today and it's already clear that it won't be a normal cycling day. Along the road there is a protest procession, but it is not clear whether these people are against nuclear power in general or whether it is a peace demonstration. Hiroshima wants to forget the bomb and it does so with the calmness and industriousness typical of the Japanese. We walk in silence along its well-kept avenues among the museum, the stalls and the famous flame of peace that has been burning incessantly since 1964 with the commitment to keep it lit until all nuclear weapons have disappeared from the earth. Every comment is rhetorical. Yet this part of Japan, marked by the legacy of the atomic bomb, is spectacular. From the heights of Kure there are woods as far as the eye can see. Overlooking the sea you can see Myajima, the small island considered a divinity by the Shinto tradition, which for centuries hosted only wild animals and a high priest. The icon of the island, and of all Japan, is the evocative Itsukushima Shrine, better known as the floating Torii. Due to the divine nature of the place, no one is born or dies on the island and there are no cemeteries or maternity wards. Trees are not cut down here and hunting is prohibited. In fact, many protected deer live on the island and become too familiar with the locals and the many tourists. But now they behave like zombies!
