Dal Sanno Park di Fukuoka, dove ci siamo accampati stanotte, lasciamo in custodia le bici alla guesthouse dove alloggeremo tra qualche giorno. In treno raggiungiamo Beppu, la città famosa per le onsen, le sorgenti termali e i suoi cosiddetti sette inferni. Narra la leggenda che due divinità volessero scendere sulla terra per visitarla. Ammalatasi una di loro, l'altra estrasse dal fondale della baia di Beppu un lungo tubo che, aprendo una sorgente dal sottosuolo, consentì all'altra d'immergersi nell'acqua miracolosa e di guarire. Da qui nasce il mito del potere curativo delle sorgenti di Beppu in cui già nel periodo Kamakura (1192-1333) esistevano in tutta la città dei sanatori per curare i soldati feriti durante la tentata invasione mongola. Grazie alla vicinanza del vulcano Aso, il più grande ed esteso del Giappone, la zona è coperta di punti dove scorre acqua sotterranea bollente. Oltre alle note proprietà rigeneranti e curative, le onsen di Beppu sono riconosciute per la loro varietà. Ci sono vari tipi di centri termali, da quelli più classici e tradizionali, a quelli più innovativi che utilizzano tecniche come le sabbiature, i bagni di fango e di vapore. Ma la particolarità della città è la presenza dei cosiddetti Jigoku, gli inferni di Beppu, sette incredibili sorgenti termali calde attorno alle quali aleggiano densi vapori che rievocano le atmosfere dell’inferno ed attirano moltissimi turisti. A differenza delle onsen non ci si può immergere in nessuno degli Jigoku per l'alta temperatura dell'acqua. Queste pozze infernali hanno diverse caratteristiche e nomi fantasiosi. L’Umi Jigoku ha acque celesti ed è circondato da una fitta vegetazione, dall'Oniishibozu Jigoku risalgono bolle di fango che i locali paragonano alle teste rasate dei monaci; lo Shiraike Jigoku ha acque lattiginose, ampi giardini e un acquario vicini;
il Kamado Jigoku si divide in molti stagni con un'acqua termale a una temperatura eccezionalmente piacevole; l’Oniyama Jigoku ospita un allevamento di coccodrilli e vicino agli stagni dello Yama Jigoku c'è un piccolo zoo. A Beppu ci rilassiamo tra un bagno di sabbia nera e un tuffo nelle onsen giapponesi più autentiche per recuperare energia dalle fatiche degli ultimi giorni e anche per non pensare ad un altro evento naturale che sta rischiando di rovinare il viaggio: il tifone si avvicina!

In addition to their well-known rejuvenating and healing properties, Beppu onsen are recognized for their variety. There are many types of spas, from the more classic and traditional to the more innovative ones that use techniques such as sandblasting, mud baths and steam baths. But the peculiarity of the city is, however, the presence of the so-called Jigoku, the hells of Beppu, seven incredible hot thermal springs with dense vapors evoking the atmosphere of hell . Unlike the onsen, you cannot take a bath in any of the Jigoku due to the hot temperature. Umi Jigoku has light blue waters and it is surrounded by dense vegetation; mud bubbles from Oniishibozu Jigoku are compared by locals to the shaved heads of monks; Shiraike Jigoku has milky waters, large gardens and an aquarium nearby; Kamado Jigoku has many ponds with thermal water at an exceptionally pleasant temperature; At Oniyama Jigoku there is a crocodile farm and near the ponds of Yama Jigoku a small zoo. In Beppu we relax with a black sand bath and a dip in the most authentic Japanese onsen to recover from the efforts of the last few days and also not to think about another weather event that may ruin our trip: the typhoon is coming!
