I have always made my grandmothers Gibonica which is a little different (from an old baker family in Valjevo) to yours, I so look forward to trying out this version! Still Gibonica and Cevapis are my faves. It is a pleasure to see this shared so beautifully. Thank you from my family to yours. Hvala Baba from New Zealand

I live in South Africa and my friend married a Serbian gentleman, (he certainly is) and he introduced his home cooking to their table. All wonderful food, Gibanica being one. It used to be time consuming layering and layering the phyllo pastry and painting melted butter on each alternative sheet etc etc etc - and sprinkling soda water on. Baba's was certainly THEEEE very BEST - EVER, and it went chop-chop. My husband went crazy for it and went through the pie like a razor blade. He was even calling for more in his sleep, clearly dreaming of Babalicious pie. I love your Baba, and am going to watch all the episodes - please give her a huge HUG from me here in Cape Town XXX More gibanica next Friday for husband. PS my dad came from Lithuania :)

+Helena Lovkis Thank you for you kind compliment. Yes, of course my recipes are better and faster because I have been cooking for over 70 years. I learned the recipes from my mamma and she learned them from her mamma and from her mama, etc. But what is wonderful that I can teach others to one day be as good as me. But of course, I am just joking here. All joking aside, I really appreciate you watching the videos and telling your friends about 'babalicious' recipes. My son is a huge fan of South Africa - he has been there 2 times. He loves the people and the food. One day soon, he plans to take me to South Africa to see the penguins. I hope your husband did not gain too much weight from eating gibanica for the past year. I am sorry I am just now answering your nice comments.

Hvala Baba! I'm glad I watched this video because I can't wait to try it this way, by soaking each sheet instead of layering piece by piece and putting oil in between each layer. I also never tried it with cream cheese before. Always used feta and farmer's cheese. That's how my baba did it.

I'm sure it's longer than 64 since you were young girl watching your mother according to some of your stories which I love. You would have been 19 at 65 years of cooking. If you were like my grandma you married early. But l do love watching your show!

I started learning to cook when I was 6, following my mom around the kitchen, so yes, it probably is 65 years for her. I think she would know.

Baba, you remind me so much of my own Baba Tominka. Sadly my baba is no longer with us, but I made Gibanica with your recipe for her yesterday and I know she smiled down from heaven. Thanks for your videos. I love watching them. Do you have a good recipe for Serbian bean soup by chance? My baba used to make one with sausage and pork belly in it that was soooo good and I would love to find a similar recipe.

@ChefbabaTV9 жыл бұрын
+kathy jo tourtois - Gibanica has some of the same ingredients as Burek, but burek uses heavier filo dough. We will do an episode on Borek soon. I serve it warm, and if there is any left, I serve it at room temperature. In the rare times that there is any left at the end of the day, then I put it in the refrigerator. It can be heated 15 or 20 seconds in the microwave and is as good as it was the first day. But in reality, I never have leftovers because everybody eats it all.

This dish is very similar to Bulgarian banitsa but prepared differently. Baba's way looks easier and I'm definitely going to try it. Banitsa is basically cheese and eggs without cream cheese. Thank you baba for sharing your delicious recipes and I love watching you both.

God bless you Baba I just made your wonderful and delish, recipe my husband couldn't stop eating and he is from Yugoslavia, my only question is my supermarket had 4 different types of filo dough numbers 4, 5, 7 and 10. I bought a box #10 and a box #4 (#10 country filo sheets and has only 8 sheets) I used #10 on the bottom and had to use #4 for the inside and the last 4 sheets #10 on top. I have about half box #4 left over. I will make a small gabanica later if I can. My question is what number filo do you use. thank you so much for this great recipe. I Will definitely make again. I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS. KEEP THEM COMING.
