@@jesterk7089 First of all when Gibraltar was conquered by Moors Spain was not existent. So Moors could not taken from Spain. I strongly suggest to start educate yourself before would sit to a table where men are discussing! Luckily history is based on facts so you might find these dates and facts can help you to understand the topic: Gibraltar was hold by Neanderthals 50.000BC. Homo sapiens arrived 25.000BC. 7.000BC Neolithic tribes. 1st Century BC Phoenicians. 600BC Greeks. Then Celts. Crhgians in about 500BC. Then Romans since 206BC for 700 years. Visighots after Romans. AD711 MOORS ARRIVED! (led by Tariq Ibn Ziyad = this is the root of the name of Gibraltar) 1462 Gibraltar captured by Spanish. 1704: captured by Brits. 1713: Treathy of Utrecht: Gibraltar de jure goes to Brits. The Spanish attitude to Gibraltar is hypocritical. There are Spanish colonies in Morocco (Ceuta and Melilla, and several islands), which Spain has no intention of giving up. The attitude seems to be that because Gibraltar is in Europe, it is unacceptable as a "colony", whereas colonies in Africa are still OK.
@FYCH45
@FYCH45 7 жыл бұрын
It has everything to do with the case of Gibraltar. The fact that you can't see that the cases of Ceuta and Melilla are comparable to Gibraltar, just shows your double standards. And your distorted view of "history". The Spanish view seems to be that it's quite alright for Europeans to have colonies in Africa, but not OK for any country to have colonies in Europe.But the real issue is the matter of self-determination. If the people of Ceuta and Melilla want to remain Spanish, they should be allowed to. The Gibraltarians have consistently voted to remain British. They too should be allowed their wish.

+Rafa Velez. Arguments from history, which are often disputed, are irrelevant to the present situation. The real question is what the peoples of Gibraltar, Ceuta, Melilla etc. want. If the Ceutans and Melillans want to be Spanish, that's what they ought to be. If Gibraltarians want to be British, that's what they ought to be.I am not a English/British nationalist. I find all narrow nationalisms, including British or Spanish nationalism, irritating, and potentially dangerous. I find that there's little point in discussing matters such as this with nationalists, as they are not able to see beyond their own narrow-minded blinkered viewpoint.There are such nationalists in all countries. But some countries manage to rise above petty nationalism. Why does Canada not go on about St.Pierre and Miquelon? Why does France not continually complain about Jersey and Guernsey? Why does Sweden not get annoyed by Bornholm and the Aland Islands? Because they are, advanced, sophisticated nations.On the other hand, the attitude of Spain to Gibraltar, or of, for example, Argentina on the Falklands (Malvinas), shows an attitude more typical of less advanced "developing" nations. Such as, for example, the attitude of China to Taiwan, or India to Kashmir.

As a Brit I can tell you that the UK will never desert or give up Gibraltar unless the people there say otherwise. Personally, I love Spain but the Spanish need to remember that in 1982 the Royal Navy sailed 9,000 miles to the south Atlantic to oust the Argentinian military from the Falklands Islands after the Falkland Islanders said they wish to remain British and not become Argentinian citizens. The islanders held a recent referendum where 99.9% of them voted to remain British. The Spanish are also being somewhat hypocritical when you consider Ceuta and Malilla which are both attached to Morocco, not to mention the small Spanish controlled island located just 250 metres off Morocco's coast. As for that treacherous, corrupt Tony Blair, he's the worst Prime Minister the UK has ever had and he's definitely the most hated politician in the UK today.

Ed Shed Ceuta & Melilla has been longer Spanish than Britain has existed. Re-Your military threat; Spain isn't Argentina, I know it would be great for you to have a little war in order to disguise your current Brexit mess but going to war with Spain wouldn't be a walk in the park, therefore you should be careful what you wish for.
@edshed968

"Ceuta & Melilla has been longer Spanish than Britain"? Really, correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Spain a Moor colony for 800 years during Britain's lifetime? "Spain isn't Argentina", yes but neither is Britain, Morocco. Spain can mess with the Moroccans and bully them but with Britain's fighting force three times larger than Spain's, Spain would be making a big mistake picking a fight with the UK as it may end up losing the whole of Andalucia and not just Gibraltar. In 1588 Spain tried to invade England and look what happened - the Spanish empire ended. Spain hypocrisy is shameless when you think about all the territory it's taken from Morocco.

Ed Shed Britain has only existed since 1707. Perhaps you are the typical little Englander that thinks the world is your oyster and confuses Britain with England. Ceuta and Melilla have been Spanish before than Britain has existed (1497 and 1668). The "moors" was an Umayan Caliphate invasion (Arab and Berber) of the Iberian peninsula although they didn't conquer the Christian Kingdoms in the north, eventually kicking them out many centuries later , just like we will do too with the British travesty colony of Gibraltar (one way or another). We don't even need to lift our arms (please save your £ to keep your fragmented union together). Gibraltar it is an unnatural colony far away from mainland Britain, only interests it to those greedy types who can dodge taxes and get things at the expense of Britain, take that away and they'll get the hell out of it ( a false sense of patriotism) Nobody is bullying Morocco, these enclaves have been Spanish longer than the modern kingdom of Morocco has existed , these places were consequences as a deterrent for attempts of further invasions and continuous pirate attacks that Spain suffered for centuries. Did the Spanish empire finish in 1588?I don't think so. Perhaps you may not know or don't want to know that Britain tried to invade the Spanish Caribbean (War of Jenkins Ear) but ended up with their tail between the legs and with heavier losses than the Spanish suffered with the "invincible armada".

Rock on Gibraltar! I lived at North Front for three years serving the Rock and Britain in the late 1980s. A wonderful people, the Gibraltarians. Most Spanish were great too, and the Moroccans. Such a shame that politically Spain can't tolerate the independence of their Gibraltarians neighbours, as Spain expects North Africa to tolerate its own African enclaves. A pity Britain can't push a firmer line with Madrid over border issues too. I really enjoyed this documentary, made the history and emotion so very personal.

Well, this documentary gives me the impression that Spain's antagonism over the Gibraltarian's Britishness just made them double down. Seriously, you wouldn't get anywhere near that kinda consensus, even in England, on remaining in the UK. Personally I think a people should be allowed to determine their own sovereignty. So, if Gibraltar want to be British, Spanish or independent, they should get that. And if Scotland wants to be independent, same thing. And if Catalonia wants independence, just the same once again.

Excellent documentary. Although I am not technically Gibraltarian, my mother and my family all come from and live on the Rock. I was there the day they reopened the frontier, I remember it well even though I was a small boy at the time and didn't quite grasp the gravitas of what was happening. I have been a frequent visitor over the last 46 years and feel a very strong affiliation with the Rock.. I feel very proud of the Gibraltarian people and my own family who struggled throughout Francos rule. I have just come back from a fantastic holiday there with my wife and kids, its changed a lot over the last 2 decades, but hasn't lost it's majestic charm.. I hope to retire there one day and officially make the rock my home 😊🇬🇮

It's a colony, it's completely unnatural to have a little British rock there, plus it is a renowned tax haven and a perfect place for crime to prosper, as they are geographically IN Spain, but they are away from the Spanish jurisdictions. It's a place of privilege, they benefit from they Spanish neighbor but they have a sort of immunity, like an extraterritoriality privilege compared to normal Spanish soil. So this has to end.

@MsPierre31
@MsPierre31 7 жыл бұрын
Well, they may have to end why not. I'm not opposed to that, as they are a platform of illegal immigration into Spain and into Europe by the way. But of course Ceuta and Melilla are not tax havens, and they never harm Morocco indeed. But remind that Ceuta and Melilla were Portuguese and then Spanish way before Morocco even existed. They weren't taken from Morocco, as Gibraltar was. But in principle, as a Spaniard, I'm not opposed to giving Ceuta and Melilla back to Morocco.
@MsPierre31
@MsPierre31 7 жыл бұрын
I'm also talking of the minor "plazas de soberanía", even if they do not have any population and they do not cause harm to Morocco, they are just tiny islands/peninsulas with some military sometimes in them. But If you're talking of the Canary Islands, well they can be returned if the UK returns Jersey, Guernsey and all the Channel Islands to France (my other country).

MsPierre31 But Gibraltarians aren't willing to do so. I mean, ok, I accept the reason that it is a tax heaven, but I feel this could end easily. Other than that, since Gibraltarians choose the Queen and the Union Jack, what can you do about it?

The only way to deal with the remaining parts of both Spain and Britain's once vast empires is to hold these referendums and be entirely guided by there outcomes and the will of the people that live there now. Gibraltar has twice overwhelming voted to be remain part of Britain and if another poll was held today it would be exactly the same outcome and this should be the end of the matter for the foreseeable future. With that being said, I'm sure that if such a referendum was held in say the Canary Islands, they too would massively want to stay with Spain and that would equally have to be accepted by all concerned. This was a fantastic documentary 👏. I think it's crucial to remember that despite territorial disagreements over Gibraltar aside Spain and Britain are strong and close military allies. Should either Britain or Spain be invaded militarily by a third party they would be fighting alongside and with each other and in full defence of each other to the very end; this should be always be remembered.

What? You mean like the EU referendum when Gibraltar opted to remain. That rejected quickly enough, didn't it. So much for self-determination.

@t.p.mckenna it was referendum on the alignment of the Conservative party in England and their stance on European. Masquarading as a "the peoples choice". Scotland, NI and Gibraltar were just treated as regions of England. Very different from Gibraltar overwhelming twice voting with 90%+ robustly supporting. Comparison is little comparing apples with oranges

Cartagena de indias battle. The battle that was deleted from the history books in the uk. Spaniards were out numbered 8 to 1 and Spaniards completely destroyed the british fleet. It took the brits 150 years to be able to defeat Spain. For 200 years Spain RULED. Yes, Spaniards were an empire and the only thing britis could use was pirates.

Trivia: Was Hercules a Black man? Answer: Yes. Before the religious wars the island of Gibraltar was called African Gibraltar. At this time all Creole Africans (Blacks) were called Heide (Pagans). Also, Hercules wife was a Thebes (East Egyptian - Black Woman). Inside the Rock of Gibraltar was his gym. Gym of the gods.

What does it mean to be Gibraltarian? The question of national identity seems to trigger different answers from different generations who lives on the Rock. Does it mean your Place of Birth? Does it mean who your parents are, or the language you speak at home? And if those are a mixture of two or more? Then how do you define yourself?

I sympathize with the people of Gibraltar. This documentary does make an argument for imperialism. I think the situation is very unique. Remember when Rhodesia gained its independence and an indigenous African government was returned to power. A lot of land that was taken from native black Africans and given to European (English) settlers. With Rhodesia's independence the land seized from indigenous black Africans were to be returned to their original African owners. The newly settled European farmers objected to this and wanted to remain a part of the British Empire. This is the problem. The indigenous black Africans were driven off the land they had been farming for countless generations, and now the land was to be returned to the original black African farmers. The new English farming settlers wanted to remain within the British Empire and not have "their country" returned to an indigenous government? Were the original Spanish Gibraltar people driven away? Are the people living in Gibraltar during the 20th century brought in by the British Imperial government after the amphibious invasion of 1704? If so wouldn't they be bias to staying with Great Britain. I am not saying Franco's claim is right. We all know that when it comes to colonialism and slavery the Spaniards wrote book. The Spanish (after Franco's death and reestablishment of the Spanish Republic) still have two land territories in Morocco (North Africa) and several islands off the coast of Northwest Africa. Let's face it the Spanish refuse to give these colonial territories their independence or return them to their "rightful" African government. Do the Spanish have the right to hang onto these territories? Were they not seized by conquest? Is that not imperialism? The problem is imperialism. If you use violence to seize someone else's land how can you justify seizing land, and claim it rightfully yours. Great Britain still has the second most powerful navy in the world. When Argentina seized control of the Atlantic Islands off of their coast Great Britain sent her powerful navy and destroyed a third rate South American military force and recaptured the Falklands. There are many other territories under Great Britain's control or protection. Northern Ireland and Gibraltar are just two. The Ulster Unionists and Gibraltarians want Great Britain to fight off "foreign invaders." The British Monarchy seized Northern Ireland in the 1600s and Gibraltar in the 1700s. Compared to England Ireland and Spain are third rate military powers who cannot challenge England. England has 2 modern aircraft carriers that it can be deployed to protect her territories. Spain and Ireland will not try to claim their Gibraltar or Northern Ireland, especially when those 2 aircraft carriers fly "made in the US" F-35 fighter-bombers. "Made in the US" figher-bombers have enable Israel to exist for over 70 years.

I found it really strange that when debating this in the UN, they never mention that just across the water is a simular situation with a Spanish city Ceuta being in Morrocco. And if the Gibraltereans don"t want to be a part of Spain Like the Basque or the Catalans well there you go.

I enjoyed this film.. I have spent time in Gibraltar and I do appreciate the hospitality, kindness, zest and love of it's people. One thing I found strange was the lack of any corresponding connection with other people under siege.. this was particularly apparent to me when Israel was not only blocking borders but bombing and killing Palestinians in appalling numbers... all the Gibraltarians I new with a few honourable exceptions seemed to have no problem with this and I still find this strange and curious.

I don't blame them it's just how things are... but the lack of sympathy from some quarters i met personally i found a bit shocking... banging on about the siege but if i said what about this happening now... one reason i'm through with talking about politics generally is people are so ridiculous.. which is also why i love people so it works both ways...
