Meet the Master - Gibson Custom’s in-house Master Artisan Rick “Rickie” Hinrichsen started his career at Gibson 12 years ago, first as a binder, then in whitewood and setup in the Nashville craftory. One day, an opportunity presented itself to hand-carve a paisley design on a guitar, and Rickie knew he was up to the challenge. Though having no formal experience in hand carving wood but deep experience in hand drawing and visual arts, he took the guitar home, bought three chisels, and got to work. He soon discovered that if he could draw it, he could carve it. After six months of meticulous work, Rickie completed his first piece.
Recognizing he possessed a unique talent, he was offered a position as the Gibson Custom Shop’s in-house Master Artisan. As Rickie says, “They just let me run wild, and the ideas are still coming.”
Every one of Rickie’s designs is unique and one of a kind. Each design is hand-drawn, then skillfully hand-carved using a Gibson Custom guitar or a MESA/Boogie amplifier as the artist’s canvas.
Many of the inlays are also hand-created by Rickie, along with other details such as wood-burning, hand-etched truss rod covers, and hand-engraved pickup covers. Each is a fully playable musical instrument with the exceptional sound quality and playability that are the hallmarks of Gibson Custom guitars and MESA/Boogie amplifiers.

In short, these guitars are works of art that are meant to be played.
Located within the Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville, TN, Gibson partners with groundbreaking artisans to create these bespoke instruments - custom-designed and built to be fully functional, authentically Gibson, and utterly one of a kind.

A Q for Gibson - A dealer I've purchased a couple of Gibson Customs from had an amazing 1-of-1 last time I was there: the Les Paul was called "Ho O'Lana". It had wood carving of a surf scene on the body face with dolphin inlays on the fretboard, an octopus inlay on the headstock and quite a few other amazing details ... *did Rickie make it?* It was absolutely INSANE!!!! Since the guitar was sold I wasn't even allowed to touch it, let alone take it out of the case and hold it. I asked the owner if he'd play it just so I could have a tiny sonic taste but he kindly declined. He may deal in Murphy Lab but he definitely had an aversion to Murphy's Law 😅 I don't blame him.

OUTSTANDING, Thank You Gibson. As some have stated in these comments, Players can be passionate about these instruments. In 1977, at the age of only 15, I worked 3 Summer jobs to save up enough money to purchase a brand new Les Paul Deluxe, and I've never looked back since. Women have come and gone in my life, but I've always owned a Les Paul. 😉

I have an idea for a custom Les Paul..(My dream specs) We start with a 59 reissue base.. A one piece top with grain similar to Page's#1 (the diagonal looking figure) A light weight mahogany back and neck with a crazy grain pattern.. A deep dish 59 top carve.. A finish like the 1/25 Page #1 for 2004 (it's actually darker with a more pronounced red than the other versions) A burstbucker #2 in the neck and a vintage white 57+ with Alnico 5 magnet swap in the bridge.. Standard pots no push pull, Orange drop .22 400 volt caps in place of bumblebees. No over fret binding, actual celluloid inlays, dark rosewood fretboard.. Jumbo frets. Locking Grover tuners in nickel.. The Page neck that's .80 at the first fret..(the #1 neck) A harder nitro finish that isn't full of placticizers..Something that's more glass like and doesn't feel like rubber with sweat and hand heat.. Long neck tennon.. Kluson bridge with brass saddles and dual thumbwheels, a Kluson Aluminum tail.. Nickel S locks.. No Les Paul logo on the headstock, but the Gibson logo in the correct 59 position.. A tapered headstock as per the original.. The trc in the correct position with a space between the nut.. A Graph tech nut.. Metal jack plate & Pure Tone jack. No ageing (that happens naturally with plenty of playing) All nickel hardware Ball end fret ends.. Standard historic plastics.. CLA001 serial number.. I'm going to stop now, because the realization that this will never happen has set in and it would likely cost $10,000-$25,000 is real.. Ahhhhhh, but one can dream...

The luthier has immense talent and I really liked a couple of the guitars he presented. But in my opinion, the yellow and green circle guitar was an eye sore. Also, the last one is not my style. But I appreciate the vision and creativity of the luthier. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I’m sure there are some people who thought both of those guitars were amazing. I would like to see some more of his custom designs.
