I bought a new Gibson Les Paul Standard in iced tea from Sweetwater this year. I refinished the whole guitar so it looks like a VOS custom shop model and I saved myself at least $3,000 and I had the work done within 20 hours. The guitar weighs around 9 lb and looks and sounds killer! And I did not spend a dime throughout this process.

You have spent money, you bought the guitar. If you bought a Murphy lab, you'd get more for it when/if you sold it. Your DIY refinish won't add any value.

@@kineasx maybe he isn’t worried about how much money the guitar will bring him because, he really digs the guitar and wants to hold onto it for a long time. If you really love a guitar it shouldn’t matter how much money you spend on it and how much you’ll sell it for.

@@Hatari2 The fact that he's done this to an actual Gibson, not some Les Paul copy, maybe he's going to fool someone into thinking it is a Murphy lab and sell it for more? Maybe he hasn't actually done this and is tying to make a point? Either way, with Murphy lab you're paying for the name, that someone who specialises in this area has spent hours on it. Not some cheap ass going at the nitro finish with his wife's hair dryer.

@@kineasx I see your point he could be doing that or he can’t afford a new guitar that’s reliced that cost almost the same price of actual vintage guitars, don’t get me wrong I know the real deal prices of actual bursts are not for the average Joe. So, custom shop makes guitars to replicate those for the mere mortal. I do believe though that Murphy lab guitars should not be that expensive.

I'm aware of the fact that these are Gibson's most popular models, but it surprises me not to see a '58 style korina Explorer, or a beautiful custom finished Firebird (reversed and/or non reversed). Or a Junior DC, things like that.

I have been watching many of these Peach unboxings recently, and I'm sorry, I cant believe there is that big of a market for the relic/aged look on guitar's these day's. To each his own but I like a shiny new guitar. That is my 2 cents.

Does this Murphy lab stuff really help make better tone ? Or just a cosmetic thing ?

Won't affect tone, but it's not purely comestic. Areas will be worn in, such as the neck so that it feels like it's been played in rather than having to spend hundreds of hours playing a brand new guitar to get it comfortable.
