Gibson ES-137 Nuts

Hello People!
Thanks for joining me for more guitar restoration videos! This one had problems with both of it's nuts. The Truss rod nut and the string retainer nut.

Lordy, that's a lot of precise work because he didn't like the color of the nut. I had a guitar with a nut I wanted to age. I laid a used tea bag over it and let it sit. Worked fine.

Never got to try out an ES-137 but that one is certainly a classic beauty. I do own a Howard Roberts Fusion which seems to share a certain lineage there but is now another extinct unicorn in the Gibson lineup.

Well, there's probably some deep insightful takeaway about human nature when the client' comes to you to deal with a nut color shade cosmetic concern and, oh btw, the truss rod is kinda screwed up, but it's not coming to me. Wasn't there a famous quote by Jimi Hendrix: "who cares if it's out-of-tune as long as the guitar is color coordinated..."??? Hey, love your attention to detail and really impressed by how organized your workspace & supplies are!

I have the Gibson standard Tribute Sg with Maple neck that model sg is 98% percent the same Sg as the Gibson standard Sg glad i looked at the specs of both before I purchased..

I just purchased 2 of those Jorgensen clamps last week to glue and lock down a neck, they worked perfectly

I had a sunburst ES-137 for a little while, several years ago - it was my way of trying to get back to the vibe I had from the 1980 Gibson Howard Roberts Fusion I used to have (and sold, because I needed to the money), that was my main guitar back in the 90s, when I was an active gigger in a heavy rock band. The '137 was a nice guitar, but unfortunately, I just don't like the Slim Taper profile neck Gibson uses on so many of its guitars (Including the ES-137) - too thin and uncomfortable for my playing style (Classical/thumb behind the neck) ☹, so the guitar went bye-bye.

Gibson single rods that compress the wood and twist the neck, and the nut pocket that is big as the end of a finger that weakens the critical area of the neck. A double two way rod with a 5/32" allen hex would fix all their problems. Why don't they change...makes no sense.

When you pulled the nut, I noticed the neck binding looked like it was T shaped and sitting in a channel cut into the sides of the fingerboard. Is that a manufacturing technique that I’m not aware of? Love your content 😎

Thank You Sir, Yes the binding channel is the modern Gibson approach

The truss rod looks way off center. Which could easily account for a twist in the neck. 17:20

@@harpethguitar about how much would it cost have a epiphone master bilt dr 500 sounds awesome signed by tommy emannual but the chords don't play in tune 12 th fret intonation is good thank you

Couldn't you just have used some amber colored marker to age the nut? Much easier than completely removing it and making a new one.

Or soak it in tea! Actually the nut was plastic and he likes bone as a nut material
