People are always saying that Gibson is not innovative and living in the past so today we check out the Gibson Modern, their newest version of the classic Les Paul design. I also asked my friends at Sam Ash if they could send me the Epiphone modern so I could see the differences between a $699 and a $2999 guitar. Which guitar reigned supreme?
Please purchase the Epiphone Modern with this link bit.ly/49uwGcA

I'm still in the old house, this is my control room! I took down the guitar room but left my guitar room up, just took some of the keyboards out. I decided it looked much better than the white room which was so empty. I'm here for about another month and that's its a double closing, one on this house and then on my new house. I think the probuckers just sound thin and weak to me. It's more apparent as I'm playing from the response of the guitar than it is from the playback of the demo, but it certainly affects my playing. Cool vid. When you get your stuff back, would be cool to compare your Gibson 2018 LP Modern to this new model vs. the Epiphone. I keep wondering if these new Gibson Moderns are just new colors or whether there’s actually any spec and/or playability differences between the 2018 and 2024 Gibson Modern models. Btw, you made a little spec goof. The Epiphone Modern has an Alnico 2 in the neck, but also has an Alnico 3 in the bridge. 👍🏻☺️ Just correcting it to clarify for people who are unaware, not to be one of those hard asses who can’t stand a teeny error, lol. You did write it correctly in a few subtitles during the test, but you said and wrote it wrong in a few other places. In case anyone is wondering, 2 & 3 is correct. Interestingly, when I looked up the Gibson variant pickups once, Gibson only offers Burstbucker Pro “treble” vs “neck.” There’s no mention of a Burstbucker Pro + pickup, though, unless you look up the specs on the Modern guitar itself. Makes me wonder if the Pro + really are the same as the Pro Treble or are something else with a different spec that they’re not currently selling as its own pickup replacement. Question for your dear friend, Jim DeCola, perhaps?! 🤔 Is Pro + the same as the Pro treble with inconsistent labeling . . . or a whole other thing so conspiracy theorists can whisper and worry that they won’t have a replacement available should they ever need one?! 😉😂 Thanks for showing off these Modern guitars. Honestly, that Epiphone is pretty sweet. I’ve heard that some people have dropped the Gibson Modern pickups into the Epiphone and wired it to coil tap. I haven’t heard any examples myself, but you can’t really go wrong with the Epiphone variant for $699 (and often less with dealer discounts). It honestly doesn’t need any upgrading for most people. There is a difference vs the Gibson, but it’s so minimal that it won’t be worth the added money and work to upgrade for the majority of folks. Lots of people gig and record the Epiphone as-is, and they sound amazing. I personally prefer the two-tones figured top on the 2018 Gibson that you have and Epiphones vs. these new solid color figured tops on the new Gibson Modern.
@TheNeuroticGuitarist
@TheNeuroticGuitarist 4 ай бұрын
I noticed that, too about the pro +. If you look up the specs of the modern it's there. My guess is that it just refers to the bridge version of the pro. Many times the bridge is wired slightly hotter to compensate for the less vibrations. Gibson also makes a super 57 which they never list on their site but low and behold I found one in my guitar parts box and it says super 57. Thanks for clarification on the 2 and 3 magnets, that would make sense lol 😆

the nice thing about the new moderns is that they actually have mother of pearl inlays.. combined with that gorgeous ebony fretboard. honestly it bothers me that the standards doesn't have MOP inlays, especially the newer ones in Bluebery burst that costs 3.5k euros in my country, i am however strongly considering a sea foam green modern. my ONLY complaint is that while they do have the improved upper fret access. they KEPT the heel joint.. i wish that was removed like on the supreme. tho i am more interested in this new modern series than a standard. Side note that Epi moderns top is gorgeous.
@TheNeuroticGuitarist

I said that to Jim decola which is why he explained it actually helps against the checking and the carve is slightly deeper w the neck shape. W the axcess the neck feels fatter so even though it has more access (literally) it doesn't feel faster. It's weird, because I like how it looks better but really dig this when it was explained to me why. The reason they don't do mop is because vintage Paul's use acrylic. I'm w u, I prefer mop all day which is clearly considered a modern feature. Rock on! 🤘 thank you for watching. Please subscribe and join the madness. 🙌

@TheNeuroticGuitarist
@TheNeuroticGuitarist 4 ай бұрын
I'm realizing more and more that the sound of the pickups as it happens effects your playing a lot more than how it effects your sound to tape. The Gibson had more compression and sustain where I felt I had to dig in harder for the epiphone. Makes sense because the pickups aren't as hot, but listening back I can totally see where people feel it's negligible. As far as my playing, I super appreciate that comment. It takes me FOREVER to do demos like this. No matter how much I practice or feel good about a riff, it immediately goes out the window when I put a camera on myself. I played everything in this video so much better the very next day. It took me like 90 mins of me yelling at the camera to get 4 mins of that rapid fire back and forth pickup to pickup thing and even them, I'm not psyched with how many playing sounds. It's not bad but I play it much better. Having the camera make you mental is really a thing. So to answer your question, I have people like paul, Cory, matt and Josh on my channel because I love seeing how other people react to guitars and because I love their playing so it takes the stress off of me for at least that video. I also have a very specific style whereas someone like paul is more classic or someone like Matt much more technical so it's nice to change it up. Thanks for your support and the kind words.

I bought a Faded Pelham Blue Gibson Modern Les Paul early in 2020, and liked it so much that I decided to get a Caffe Latte Fade Epiphone Les Paul Modern a few months after. I was floored with how good the Caffe Latte Fade looked and was even more impressed with how it felt, played and sounded. I realized after a while that I was playing and enjoying my Epiphone way more than my Gibson Modern. I also liked the coil split on the Epiphone better than the coil tap on the Gibson, which I just felt was underwhelming. Well, finally I traded the Gibson Modern Les Paul for a Wine Red Gibson Supreme Les Paul mainly because that Supreme in that color was something I couldn’t resist. It worked out fine because the Supreme pleases me much more than the Gibson Modern Les Paul did. Nothing against the Modern, which was a fantastic guitar, but man do I love the Supreme, which has pretty much all the features of the Modern Les Paul. Oh, and that Epiphone Les Paul Modern of mine is never going anywhere. To me, it may just be the best value in a Les Paul. So much fun to play, looks fantastic and just a fraction of the cost of its Gibson big brother. I’m just glad Gibson didn’t offer the Caffe Latte Fade finish on their Modern Les Pauls….it saved me a lot of money and I’m more than happy with the Epiphone one. Either way, I am big a fan of the Modern series.
@TheNeuroticGuitarist
@TheNeuroticGuitarist 4 ай бұрын
I had quoted you in my original taping of this but it didn't fit well in the video because of how much info I was trying to get across with the split vs tap. I think the epi is fantastic but the pickups just don't do it for me. They're much more subtle to listen back to than how I felt playing them both but I tend to gravitate towards hotter pickups whereas the epi has more classic sounding pups. I def think the splitting is a more dramatic difference so I can see where one is more appealing than the others. I have some gibsons that tap that don't really sound like you're doing much of anything. The Cafe latte fade is also so nice. Really beautiful colors coupled with 699 which is way cheaper than 2999. But I def feel the difference with the Gibson.

Yup, and I’m more into classic sounding HB pickups, so the Epiphone sounds real good to me. I remember the first time I used coil tap on both my Gibson Modern LP and SG…..I thought…‘That’s it?’ Guess I was expecting more and what I heard did nothing for me. Give me coil split every time.

Modern Les Paul = Wrap around bridge > Tune O Matic Bridge. The neck carve is an absolute necessity. Some belly buts would reduce weight and increase comfort further. Scalloped cutaway would be the obvious choice for even better upper fret access. Compound radius is nice but very 2010. Weight relief could be achieved scooping out the surface of the guitar with contour cuts and a skinnier neck. However some unique switching and pickup options would be a breath of fresh air. 5 way switch and aftermarket pickups from Bareknuckle, Anderson, Lace, Suhr, DImarzio etc would also spice up their brand considerably. Particularly with how good PRS pickups have consistently been improving. Also titanium versus brass hardware. Or taking their pots and going 1 volume, 1 tone, 1 kill pot and a blower switch. You could wire the tone pot to one of the positions so you can isolate a "Jazz" setting you can roll off and not affect the other positions. The creativity can go up more levels. But in regards to look I think the Epiphone paint finish is 100x sexier. Burst Les Pauls and Natural Les Pauls are the best over solid colours. Natural wood like your first Les Paul with the EMG's is my favourite like Gurthrie Govan, Nuno Bettencourt, Ron Thal and Reb Beach's guitars, natural wood crystallising over time. Maybe you could rank the history of Les Pauls with regards as to which is most player/ergonomics friendly? If you had a signature Les Paul designed with everything you know about single cut style guitars what do you steal from Gibson, PRS or others?

Gibson may be living in the past ..... but I AM the past! I love Gibsons and these are both amazing. Beautiful and sound great. I like the Gibson better - but probably not 4 times better. I think Gibson should brand Epiphones as Gibsons with a designation - like PRS or Fender - and make the brand stronger, then use Epiphone to make the traditional Epiphone guitars. My two cents. I really dig the interim studio, looks great. UDAMAN!!

Ok Benny I’ve watched it all. To me the Gibson sounds muddy. It looks fantastique tho, but I’m listening through studio monitors and the Epi wins easily. But of course that’s my opinion. My style of guitar playing and preferences are different than others. I’m sure others will comment that the Gibson sounds better to them and I’m fine with that. I’d recommend you try both in your local Sam Ash store, use the supplied link in the description for this channel. And for those like me who live outside of the USA try one in your local reseller if you can. Cheers from NZ 😎🎸🤘

That's the thing dude, there's no right answer. It's subjective. In fact, it's more about how the guitar inspires you to play than even the difference in pickups sometimes. Cheers bro, as always, thanks for taking the time.

The epiphone game is wild. They're def doing the whole anchoring marketing deal where gibson will release something for a crazy custom shop price so an epiphone for 1500 seems normal. But the quality of epiphone has certainly gone up in my book and inflation is certainly a thing

Ignoring tapping, splitting, phasing and other stupid cr*p that nobody in the real world actually uses (and I have no idea why manufacturers keep including it), three main positions sound pretty close, definitely in personal taste territory and only a fanboy of Company1 or Company2 will claim "better".

1. If someone is going to spend $3000 on a guitar, there's a good chance they're a serious player. This isn't always the case, but I for one use all of those features. I'm a studio musician. Not everyone needs that stuff and there are plenty of guitars that don't have any of those features (more that don't than do) so it's sorta hilarious that you wanna complain about it because you don't use it. You don't speak for all Guitarists, bro. 2. I agree that the demo comparison sounds substantially closer than it felt like in the room. They're very similar, but the epiphone made me work much harder to get that out of it, so a huge component is how the guitar reacts to the player, much like a car reacts to the driver. You don't wanna be driving a Ferrari at 180mph if you can't handle it. 3. Why does someone have to be a "fanboy" simply because they enjoy something? I love guitars. I love making music and I love the instruments that do that. Am I a fanboy??? Not in the slightest. I am a connoisseur of instruments. Big difference. Connoisseurs deserve respect 🙏 Cheers 🤘🤪🤘

@@TheNeuroticGuitarist 1. As a studio musician, if you need single coil sounds, wouldn't it be way better to use a single coil guitar, instead of a hacked up solution that it neither here nor there? 2. If someone enjoys something, of course that doesn't make them a fanboy. I was referring to some comments that said strait up "Gibson better". Just by listening the video, neither is actually better, they're just slightly different. And I bet all those commenters would fail on a blind test so hard! 3. People who refer to themselves as connoisseurs are worse than fanboys 😝 😁

Sorry brah... there is almost nothing "modern" about that. How about deal with the tuning issues and the fragile headstock BS? That awful bridge. Perhaps the weight???. No removing the pick-guard does not move the needle. You are a LP fanboy. Nothing wrong with that. the most modern LP that I have seen is the BFG... its not so much it is more metal but it is raw and cool and something actually different.

They're only overpriced if the market says so. If people keep buying them for those prices then simple economics would dictate that they're by definition "worth it." Whether it's worth it to you or whether you even have the taste/skills to discern is entirely a different story.
