We're a little bit over excited again this week as our 'secret' local guitar shop produced another gem of a guitar that we managed to swap for a couple of ex-demo guitars, some magic beans, and a fistful of dollars. Now if we can just get comfortable we will show you how it sounds...

I still find the fact the Flying V was released in 1958, the same year as the ES 335, insane.

Gibson were trying to compete with the futuristic Stratocaster and they got really adventurous... And they were probably influenced by all the science-fiction movies and comic books back then...

Fins, they were on everything in the late 50s and early 60s. Basically THE shape of the futurism of that era. Here is another mind blower. Hartley Peavey drew the spikey Peavey logo in school back in those days too. Peace and stay safe.

@@PerpetuallyTiredMusician That's amazing because I've always associated the spiky Peavey logo with all the metal guitars that he and his company built in the early 80's ( I own one of each and they're unique guitars...) To think that he drew that in school...Wow... It's almost like heavy metal didn't exist as a genre yet but all of its elements such as the guitars and the logos were already there in the 50's...

Yes Gibson used Schaller made Nashville bridges and even German made machines at times, my 1980 Les Paul Heritage 80 has a "made in Germany" Nashville" bridge from new, I purchased it brand new from Selmers, London in January 1981 on my 26th birthday, seems a long time ago. I also have a 1991 White Gibson Flying V but I've never had to take the bridge off, though it looks the same as the Les Paul, only a chrome version, Next time I string it up I'll take a look. Nice Video and a wonderful guitar, Exact same specs as my White (cream now its aged) 91 V. Edit: just saw that a few people have already answered this for you.

I have the exact one. Bridge is Schaller Germany, original, stock. The Machine heads wobble from ther day one, this is a part of the design, but they hold tune perfectly. That crack on the pickguard is most probably not the result of overtightening, but someone must have stepped on the cable while pulling the guitar. My pots are different, they are Gibson flat bottoms, and the soldering is much neater, so yours have been replaced. Thanks for the review. Keep it !!!! I sold mine 10 years ago, and tried not to be sad for allt hese years. But 6 months ago, my son and wife bought it back from the guy I sold it to, and for the second time I am a happy owner of this fabulous instrument. I will never part from it.

If you want to play sitting down comfortably I have found a way. You need a length of cotton material that's not too wide, I suppose you could use an old tie. Tie a knot in the middle to leave a small loop that the lower horn just fits in. Then tie the ends around your thigh, the guitar will rest on your leg with the small loop on the outside to stop the guitar sliding down. Once you get it adjusted to feel right you can just slip it off your leg leaving the knots in place.

Hey Colin, another great video! I also never wanted a Flying V. Couldn’t possibly have imagined I’d want one. But then couldn’t have imagined I’d want an SG, a Jaguar, Casino, Firebird, Gretsch etc. I was a Strat and Tele man through and through. But after 40 years of playing I turned that ridiculous (on my part) notion on its head and have bought and loved each one of those in the past 2 years. ‘Variety is the spice of life they say’ and when we try knew guitars each can offer a different quality and a different emotional response. I’m loving the 2021 Epiphone Inspired by Gibson Flying V I recently bought. It looks absolutely ridiculous and amazing all at the same time. Flying V’s aren’t just for metal heads. There’s some nice Rock and and Blues tones to be found. Hope you continue to enjoy yours 🤘🏻

I'm so glad you got this I've wanted one since I first started playing. I've seen them in guitar shops but a bit expensive for me. When I finally got enough money I bought the SG 61 instead then three Les Pauls and a Hummingbird I've never even got to play a V or Explorer or Firebird for that matter. Most shops didn't have them . And now after all this time I hear the tone that you're getting out of that Flying V and feel like I need to try one. The neck pick-up just has that perfect amount of mid not to fat . Thanks mate for spending the money to show this guitar. Now I need to see what gear I can sell to get me one. Challenge accepted!

Hi Colin. Received wisdom is that pick-up designer and builder Seth Lover may have named, but had no involvement in the design. His quote ‘When I SAW it, I said “that looks like a Flying V”’ being something of a giveaway in that regard since, if he’d designed it, he’d have known what it looked like. Apparently the 3 ‘Modernistic’ guitars - Flying V, Explorer and Moderne - were designed by a team, headed by Gibson’s, then, production manager /wood sourcer, whose name escapes me at the moment. Checkout 5 Watt World’s Flying V KZbin video for details. The Firebird, which could reasonably be classed in the same group of ‘Modernistic’ instruments was, of course, famously designed by renowned (finned) auto designer Ralph Dietrich.

I think congratulations are in order, Colin, not just for one of the best guitar review videos I've seen (by anyone) but for finding a truly great instrument which I think had your name on it as surely as it had adie's name and postcode on it. And you were playing it like a man possessed, grinning from ear to ear off-camera I've no doubt. Those pickups sound awesome, producing the best tone heard in any of your reviews. And much as those 1958 Korinna Flying V iconic guitars are revered as they are, that original thru-body design with the delta-wing shaped tail plate isn't the best thing for playability - with a normal stop tail you can top-wrap, as you do, and get that slinky feel you are after. Actually, what I do instead, is raise the height of the stoptail to get that shallower string angle over the bridge without top-wrapping. Some folk will insist that the bolts must be bolted down for better sustain, but that, I am sure, is just another guitar player's myth (besides which, there's a solution - on ebay you can buy chrome washers that go between the bolt and the guitar and allow you to screw-down the bolts firmly and at the desired height - though you might not want to do that on that V for authenticity's sake. Me? I would do it). On my Les Paul I have a pair of bolts that have no retaining flange, just threaded shaft and slotted head, and with the washers fitted the stop tail is bolted firmly down and simply won't budge (and it doesn't fall off when changing strings) perfect, and makes the guitar so much more playable for that shallow break angle. Anyway, remember to leave your postcode in a comment box below and your window open. I'm very jealous... Congratulations, mate...

I just found your channel among my feed’s suggested viewings, and I enjoyed your presentation very much, and have subscribed. I especially like your segment where you give a brief talk about how the instrument came into your life, or how it found you, so to speak. When an instrument finds me, I often see this as part of the adventure in my own life. I have wondered if others feel this way too, and I’m pleased to see that someone else feels this way. Keep up the wonderful content!

I had a V in that same color, funny thing is that I also broke off that little piece of the pickguard. I first thought that was my guitar but mine was from 2003 or 2004.

People say things about gibson re their price etc. but there is something special about an authentic gibson flying v, the provenance etc. As long as it isn't astronomically expensive, I'll grudgingly pay up to $3,000 CAD total if the ones pushing that dollar limit have amazing specs. Other American companies have quality parts etc., gibson shouldn't have an excuse to be expensive. They should make their regular line fairly priced for people who PLAY and attract them, and a separate line for people who want a gibson as an investment

Wouldn't you believe it Colin. Just a couple of hours after watching this video on Friday, do I come across and impulsively purchase (my first) Flying V also. An Epiphone to be fair, but I'm still dead excited to get my hands on it! Cheers

@@theguitaristas Will do! Its their '67 reissue too so would make for a nice comparison - though with grover tuners and a slightly different transition from the body to the neck.

Congrats Colin! Once you get around the learning curve in terms of playing it seated, there is nothing better. They have their own "thing" going on. They make me want to play more than any other style of guitar I've owned, and hey, is there anything cooler looking than a Flying V?... no...no there isn't. :) Glad you love it, and thanks again for bringing a V to the channel (finally! 🤪) 😂🤘🏻

Fantastic guitar Colin. I've always had a soft spot for the Vee but as I'm not a long haired metaller (🙂) I think I would look stupid playing the Beatles and Weller on one! Great sound and those pick ups through the JCM900 sound magical. Great find mate. Have a good one. Mark

Ah Colin, of course we care what you think brother! Why else do you think we come back to watch your content every week? As to that German made bridge, I've seen Trogly take apart many Les Pauls from this era of Gibson that had them as stock parts. Not sure if they are made by A.P.I. or Schaller or both off the top of my head. Thanks again for my weekly Friday breakfast video!

I always loved this exact version of Flying V. Nice find, hope you get a lot of fun from it! This one reminds me of 90s Les Paul my friend once gave me for the re-wiring job. That thing definitely had a neck break and a re-fret, lots of dings, but it has so much character. I'm asking him to sell it to me since I had it for a week.

I almost missed this video! About a year ago, my friend George said I should get a flying V. I just laughed. I never thought I would consider one. It's just not me. However, I may have changed my mind. Colin, you have changed my mind. I am really attracted by the upper access which I am just learning how to properly use. Those pups are super HOT and you are right, they sound pretty awesome. Great job as always! I hope your summer is going well. ROCK ON MY BROTHER! Another KEEPER!

I bought one of these in 1994 for $800USD, brand new with the Gibson case. It was a fantastic guitar with perfect fit/finish and sounded like a beast. It was one of those lifetime guitars that I foolishly traded away.

Hey Colin! Great video and so glad this has come in to your life!! Back in April I was in Knoxville doing a little guitar safari and this exact guitar (down to the chipped pick guard) was at the Guitar Center in town. I picked it up and played it, put it back on the wall and left. Well I couldn’t get it out of my mind, not helped by the fact I could see the roof of the Guitar Center from my hotel! So I went back about an hour before closing and started playing it again. While I was playing it started to cut in and out. Traced it to the toggle switch and it eventually stopped working all together. I left with a 2011 American Strat! I’ll get the V one day! Cheers.

Thanks Brent, ah yes we do love a guitar safari!... it's good to hear you were not discouraged but quickly transferred your affections elsewhere and left with another guitar. I've had that happen... once you have given yourself permission to buy a guitar you are not going to leave without one! 🤣👍
