In today's video, Paul Drew from The Studio Rats is seeing if Gibson guitars actually are that different.
Each of these guitars a Gibson 335, a Gibson Les Paul and a Gibson SG are very different on the outside but how different do they actually sound. I go through the complete specs of these guitars and and play examples on each guitar to see how different they really are.

I've found that if your collection is large enough, your wife will not notice any newcommers. Well established formula is s=n-1 where n is current number of guitars and s = separation. The complex math involves not solving for S.

Overlooked part of tone where the 3 guitars in question use the same pickups is where the neck meets the body and how much the fretboard protrudes into the body... Les Paul protrudes the most= more meat ( 17th fret ), followed by the 335 ( 19th fret ), then the SG being the lightest ( bright ) perhaps ( 21st fret )... just an observation, not to take away from the high quality of this video but to help reinforce your conclusions about the differences....absolute stunning 3 guitars...

I heard differences between the 3 guitars, and those differences mirrored the way you descibed it. SG - thinner, LP - fatter, ES335 - somewhere in between. I have an SG, a Les Paul and an ES335. Not sure I can say I like one more than the others, but the ES335 has something that the others do not - a mind of its own when playing loud. Its great when the body starts to resonate and the feedback takes off. As long as you can control it a bit (by turning your body position or by lowering the guitar volume), its super cool.

I'm shocked that I can actually hear a difference on that first (not the opening) comparison with the Les Paul sounding heavier in the mids , the SG having a bit more of an open sound, and the 335 having less top end than the other two. What a surprise. I prefer the SG.

Great Video! While they can sound similar (especially when overdriven) it comes down to feel for me. I never got on with SG models. They feel fragile and I don’t like the way they feel on me. They are very cool looking electrics and I love the full access of the neck. Just didn’t work out for me. I really like the ES-335 a lot. A little big and I wish the input jack was side mounted. But I would definitely own one again and the 1964 Custom Shop example shown in this video is what I would own. I even love the color 😊 Les Paul. Other than extreme boat anchor examples it is the perfect Gibson electric for me. Custom Shop examples are generally lighter and the Custom Buckers sound fantastic. I do find not all Custom Buckers sound alike. Maybe because they are wound by hand like the originals in the late 50s? I do not find it uncomfortable at all. A Les Paul and a Strat could be the only electrics I would own if I had to choose just two. 🤟🤟

Hi Paul, very nice comparison video. I played all 3 and eventually sold the 335. Beautiful sounding and feeling guitar, but the dimensions bothered me, particularly when seated. I am lucky enough to have had a nice draw on a CS R9 LP that looks, sounds, weights and has the neck of a ‘59. I acquired a ‘64 CS SG. Main differences with the LP are smaller, lighter body, wider and super-fast rounded ‘64 neck and a snappier tone. Although the recorded tunes might sound very close, the playing experience is quite different. Cheers !

This is such a great video. I've been on the fence for a while as regards LP, ES335, SG. I ended up going for an SG as they can be lighter. I have to say that the SG neck seems very long. When playing stuff around, say, the Eminor (8th fret) - I seem to be around the 5th fret (in reference to the SG scale length) on a 25.5in strat due to the different scale lengths and the bridge position., Not a problem if you know about it.

I sold my sg due to that neck being too far out to the left. It played perfectly had p90’s my wife actually said I like that sound. I was like what??!!! It was however a rocknroll relic slightly relic’d. Gibson sued them. They were all made that good. The neck on the sg is put in at the very end of the body as opposed to other guitars. So obviously it sticks out further. Anyway, they’re no longer allowed to make a bunch of models now.

They sound different, but I didn't hear a single clip that I'd hear out of context and think 'that's not quite the right guitar to play that on'. In other words, the differences are extremely subtle, more important to the player, and don't exclude any of these instruments from doing anything the others can musically. This all being said, the designer shapes deserve love, too. I'm partial to the Explorer because it sits somewhere between a LP and SG in terms of sound (when using comparable PAF style pickups); not as open/twangy as the SG, but not as thick as the LP. But most importantly and perhaps controversially, I find the Explorer to be the best solid-body Gibson design for comfort. Most Gibsons neck dive and the ones that don't tend to be boat anchors or wide semi-hollowbodies. That is, except for the Explorer. They're regularly less heavy than Les Pauls and way better balanced than the SG, Flying V, or Firebird. The control accessibility on the Explorer is great when you get used to it - never needed two tone controls, and the simplified 3 controls are in a straight line with the input jack on the side (out of the way). Compare that to the SG, Firebird, and '67 style V designs that are relatively cramped and have the jack in the way near the knobs. The only thing is the absolutely massive hard shell case - what a pain to fit into a compact car and carry for multiple city blocks downtown for gigs. And folks tend to typecast it as a metal guitar, when it is actually insanely versatile sonically with reasonable pickups. I've played everything from jazz to afrobeat to rock to country on mine.

If you play with heavy distortion or digital they all sound the same lol. If you play them into a small/medium tube amp clean or at edge of breakup- that’s when the differences come out. Also when you put a slightly microphonic pickup in all of them that’s also when differences come out. But when you’re playing with a super distorted tone they all sound like a super distorted tone. Also- it’s worth noting that I am an improviser and all 3 guitars lead my playing in different directions. An SG makes me get a bit more shreddy. A les paul will generally make me more dramatic, and a 335 will make me play more vocally. I will agree you are 100% right about the strat player needing an SG. It’s like a lighter thinner more premium feeling strat. If strat guys struggled to get the feel for gibsons in the past- try an SG and make yourself play one for a week and then you’ll bond with an SG more than you thought possible. The ‘different’ Gibson is a reverse neck-thru Firebird. It sounds like a strat and tele combined but with an extra testicle. And if you’re tall enough to reach the first fret on a Firebird comfortably- nothing else feels like a 🐦‍🔥

I own all 3 (plus a V and an Explorer), and they all have different Pickups in them so they do sound different. But the biggest change is how they make you play. A Les Paul (with the weight) makes you play very deliberate. You hold notes more. An SG tends to be lightweight with a thin neck and a easy playing radius so it’s more comfortable to zip around, but you lose some of that tone just because you tend not to stay in one place too long. A 335 is hollow but bulky so it’s light but you aren’t whizzing around the fretboard on it, but it is a little less tiring than a Paul. It does feedback in front of an amp however. And neck dive is an issue- V’s point way up, SG’s drop way down, Explorers are perfectly balanced, The Paul will droop your own neck downwards, and a 335 is pretty balanced but leaves an indent on your armpit sitting down. They all make you play differently.

If you’re not listening “intentionally” for the differences, you won’t hear them. But if you ARE listening to the differences, they’re there… at least between the SG and the Les Paul we all know this, but the Les Paul has more “meat”/fuller sound to its tone. The SG has more “sparkle.” Way more important is the feel/balance. Everyone will have their favorite. Hard to argue with lighter weight of the SG, but some might prefer the fact that the Les Paul doesn’t have the neck dive. All are cool in my book!

Nice video that, imo, proves a good point, which is that Gibsons (all models) pretty much sound the same. A glued in neck, 24 3/4 scale length, tunomatic bridge, mahogany, rosewood, maple, etc, humbuckers, etc, all contribute to a specific sound. The Les Paul is probably the all around (cork sniffing) winner. It's better balanced while standing, and it's neck sits deeper into the body (the upper part of the neck) which, imo, gives it a bit more lower midrange heft to its sound as compared to the others. Probably the most distinct sounding Gibson ( though like the others is the same Gibson FLAVOR) is the Flying V. Imo it has the best upper midrange zing to it ( Lead heavy players like Michael Schenker seem to gravitate towards them). Again though, if your a strat or Tele player and have to play ( UFO's ) 'Rock Bottom', ZZ Top's 'Sharp dressed man' or Thin Lizzy's ' The Boys Are Back In Town', etc, then ANY Gibby you pick up is going to sound RIGHT 🤘

I’ve never been one that can tell the Gibson sound apart. For example, if you hear a Stratocaster and a telecaster odds are you can differentiate the two especially the bridge pickup. But a Gibson Les Paul vs a Gibson SG I would struggle in a blind test to tell which is which. Now a Les Paul vs a Firebird? Yeah I could probably hear a major difference. I would say play the guitar that feels best to you and worry about tone second. Regardless of brand, play the best feeling one to you.

I have owned all 3, but only the LP is staying as the sustain suited my playing better. I liked the other two, but with the LP around I just didn’t play them much.

Great video, I like listening to you play! I have the same '64 reissue SG (except red), a LP supreme and a sparkle Explorer. When standing I like the SG the best, when sitting I like the Les Paul, and for knocking things over I like the Explorer lol... Oh and the Rosewood J-45 sounds real nice too ;~) Go team Gibson!! Cheers!

Maybe through headphones there's some slight noticeable differences. But the end signal we're getting is almost exactly the same, to my ears. I'm hearing the strings react a bit differently when you dig in, but that gets drowned out with any amount of volume. "Feel" is always gonna be one of the most important things for most players. To me, a LP is "home" and feels comfortable. SG's are awkward for me, because it shifts the whole scale of the fretboard, kind of like Firebirds. If your standing it's fine. For me, guitars with more compact shapes work best. Like my Cutlass, is extremely comfortable to play in ANY position. But still doesn't really play any "better". Thin U neck carves are my favorite. The "wide thin" pattern on my PRS NF3, is rapidly becoming my current obsession. Like butter dog! Ain't that what the kids say?

I have a RO, a 1990 SG special, and a 59 dot, and while I prefer the dot over all of them , it can be hard to control feedback in a live situation with lots of gain. But I have performed the medley of rime of the ancient mariner/power slave in front of 10000 bikers with the 335 to great effect....

Proof again the tone is in the Pickups. SGs however, are too flimsy to stay in tune if you're really digging in.

I had a '64 SG Reissue. It sounded great, but the tuning instability just ruined it - even when not even touching the bar. Such a shame, as the neck profile was awesome, as were the pickups. I'd love one like CME did a fews back, with a normal stop tail (as awesome as the maestro looks).

I've heard it said that some of the sound you hear while playing is coming through your body, and is constructed in the ears. I would like to see your partner listening while blindfolded while you play each guitar, and see if he hears a difference in the room, not letting his eyes bias the results

This is what I heard. The Sg sounds leaner and very balanced across its entire range. The Les Paul has more activity in low mids and lows. It can get somewhat tubby on the lows but a low cut at a 100hz or using a TS or SD1 style pedal con also tighten up the bottom end. The 335 is sweeter in top range, kind of like if you had a high cut around 4k and it has a different response in terms of attack. It is more dynamic. The more gain you use the least apparent these differences are perceived but they are different. They all have a general timbre that seems to put them in a family group and they do share characteristics such as scale length as, some of the materials and electronics but they are different and they feel different to play. Those differences while more nuanced than when compared to another type of guitar such as a Tele or Strat are there.

Well Gibson. Since the neck PU on SG is further away, why don't you make it 24 frets to fill the gap? Win win solution.

I want to try a 335. I have an SG but mostly play acoustic guitar. The problem I have is that the SG sits very differently so if I blindly switch from my acoustic to SG then my point of reference changes greatly because Fret 0 (the nut) of the SG is much further away… interested to see if the 335 sits any differently

They all sound very close and they all are going out of fashion. I would only keep the SG because of its cosplay value. It gets you in the mood when you grab it. For all other stuff, I would go with a 25.5", hss, sss or p90-p90.

I’ve never been a big fan of the look of the SG, the 335 is too wide on my lap, and the Les Paul is too heavy. But I love the look over the LP, so I would pick a chambered Les Paul modern with the comfort cuts and lighter weight.

@vw9659 Ай бұрын
Why would you assume that the greater output of your LP over your SG had anything to do with the body construction ? Firstly, until pickup makers supply proper specs with every pickup (resonant frequency, Q factor, amplitude), or you measure those things yourself, you cannot assume that two samples of the same pickup model have exactly the same specs. Pickup makers have never published their manufacturing variability. And some same-model pickups that have been measured have been found to differ in those parameters. Some pickup bar magnets have also been found to vary in strength along their length. So two magnets could magnetize the string differently at the same pickup height. Secondly, we do not know the type or age of your strings. Thirdly, there is a long list of other known sonically-influential factors that could be implicated in output difference before one would grasp at straws like the solid body: resonant modal frequencies of the neck, string-fret micro-damping, losses in the SG trem, variations due to ABR-1 manufacturing tolerances (sonic differences have been measured due to their variability), etc etc. Finally, unless someone can describe the precise physics of how the body construction of the LP and the SG could influence the guitar's output, it's really just a science-challenged guess. Common beliefs about how guitars work are full of misunderstood physics. We can do better. There is now several decades of published measurements of real guitars by independent scientists, which show how they actually work. 335s on the other hand have been measured to have greater string vibration losses due to their increased bridge mobility, compared to solid-bodies.

The 335 sounds best to me, but it's only marginally. It wouldn't justify shelling out another 2500 pounds just for that slight difference in sound if you already have a Les Paul and/or SG.
