i would guess that some play is intentional. considering the screws wont always be at the same height you would need some wiggle room for things to not be perfectly square. like if it was an air tight fit the whole bridge could only move up and down all together and you wouldn't be able to adjust the high and low e side separately. im currently dealing with the posts slowly pulling themselves out of my old bc rich so im looking for fixed bridge replacements that might stay in place better overtime.

Music city bridge sell an adjustable stud that tightens down on the wraparound tailpiece and stops that tilt. They also sell a compensated bridge, called the stud finder, which works great for older model. Les Paul Junior’s look them up on KZbin.

This is apparently a common problem. I had same problem with my SG Jr. reissue. I got a compensated wraparound bridge from Music City Bridge in Nashville. Also a set of Tone Pros Locking Studs (standard nickel ss1-n). Note: The Tone Pros come with a set of inserts as well. These inserts are a different size (OD) than what is likely in your guitar. Don't pull your inserts. Just remove the old bridge and studs and install the new ones in the existing inserts. Shawn Helsel has a nice video on this on KZbin on his SG Jr.

I got a brand new LP Junior today and mine is the same and I don't care because it came perfectly set up/relief/action/intonation from Gibson and the tuning stability is excellent! I was doing full step+ bends and it's staying in tune. After playing it for 3+ hours today the G and B strings barely went flat a beep hair one time. The wraparound bridge on this guitar is better than my Gibson Tribute and my Epi 59 standard as far as tuning stability. I was prepared to order the Music City bridge and stud replacement but there is no need to. 😊

Thanks for that. I just got a 2024 model that was setup perfect in my amateur mind and honestly I can't find a reason right now to mess with it. Take it for what it's worth, but I brought it to a Guitar Center tech just to check the factory setup and he said it was dialed in. I'm a Tele guy, but the low action, resonance, no buzzing tone, and sustain, on this guitar is great. Same guitar, same problem with the bridge. Intonation drove me crazy and after doing some research I found I wasn't the only one and started looking at solutions. Replaced the bridge with "The Savvy" by Music City Bridge and a set of top adjustable locking studs from Schroeder guitar and fixed the issue. So then the small turners were driving me crazy and it wouldn't stay in tune consistent as I would like so I recently changed the stock tuners out and put a set of Grover vintage 136N tuners on and man oh man, all my problems are gone and the guitar is amazing! Sounds and plays better! Put $200 bucks in the guitar and you will be a happy camper :-)

Same as my original 1955 LP Junior. It looks kinda loose goosey but once under string tension it has a very solid connection to the studs and is not moving anywhere. Does it have great sustain? Why yes, yes it does. If it bothers you slip a 1/2" washer under the bridge and you are golden.

About a year late, but i figure I'll leave a comment for your algorithm because IDK if it was answered for you yet. The reason it does that is so you're able to adjust the posts and it can flex while still in those posts and not break or bend. If there was a tighter tolerance, you would not be able to independently raise or lower the bridge posts as needed for the 1st and 6th string height. This is 100% how any one of these should be.

I just traded for a PRS SE 245 Standard in gorgeous tobacco burst yesterday with a wraparound bridge like this. The bridge is a little different, as it has individual saddles to adjust intonation on each string. But I like you had the same question about the bridge being cocked up a little on the posts like that. Was thinking it wasn't supposed to be like that, and that maybe even the posts were bent or cross-threaded in the holes!?! It was pretty concerning and so I got on KZbin and did a search, and that is how I found your video. I'm still doing my homework on this. Did you ever get any definitive answers regarding? @@hoganshideout cool. The next time you change your strings, see if the 2 allen screws are all the way in, and coming out the other side, or backed off a little (the ones on the back of the bridge used for moving the entire bridge back and forth for major intonation). Mine were ALL the way screwed in and I guess at this point, they were sort of a pivot point for the whole bridge on the 2 lugs? No idea, but I backed them off and it seemed to be fine so far.

Get what you are talking about and you are quite right, what they need is an adjustable one, as it looks like there's no way to set intonation as well, then it can be screwed down to clamp it once you get your intonation, also looking at it, it sits well back on the studs, it needs to seat more central, maybe this then would mean moving the stud holes to keep the neck to bridge length right, I'm no Luthier so it could involve a lot more calculations, but that's for Gibson to sort it, Right, there standards are dropping on the lower priced Guitars without doubt.

I have the same problem with the sloppy feeling Stud bridge on my new Gibson LP Special. I have two Epiphone "Inspired By" versions and they have tight fitting studs. I plan on ordering some stud bolts that tighten for the Gibson, but you should have to do that on an $1800 guitar. My Gibson version weighs over 9 pounds too. I had previously bought one that was only 7 pounds 2 ounces. I sent it back because the wood in the body was badly mis-matched and it looked awful. All in all, I went through testing 9 Gibsons before I found my current one. I bought it because it felt the best with a thicker neck and good frets. All of the other ones I tried had been Pleked until they felt like the old "Fretless Wonders". No excuse for that other than having lazy or untrained operators of the Plek machine. It feels awful when your fingertips rub so much when you do any string bending at all. As it is now, one of my Epiphones is my favorite Special to play. It just feels better and the P-90s even sound better. I thought Gibson was getting their sh*t together, but they seem to have come a long way to make the guitars look better while ignoring the overall playability issues...!

I have a number of Gibson std LPs however due to a shoulder injury and spending of hours on a regular basis composing material my poor should would often complain so I went a bought a Gibson entry level LP Junior tribute special white body with Humbuckers not p90s That did come with a what some folk refer to as the lighting bridge(intonation molding as part of wraparound tailpiece. As for it sitting on the studs pieces no problem overall, there is a slight tilt but not as obvious tilt as your TP appears. My issue it the the TP does not quite move forward (closer) enough to to the neck get a 100% intonation for the high E and B string close but not perfect. I have since ordered a Schaller Signum Wraparound Combination Bridge and Tailpiece to hopefully solve any intonation issues I am a bit of a stickler when it comes to intonation. Also when I get the new bridge it has a locking nut on it to keep it secure at string change times. I had first looked at a Tone Pros (WR Bridge) first but the cost in Australia compared to the Schaller Signum is quite expensive in comparison. The other option if you haven't thought about it would be to find a metal washer you could cut and make to reduce the gap between TP and studs, it is a cheaper alternative to what I am doing. Just a thought.

I'm an engineer with 30+ years experience who got into guitars later in life and I find many things with guitar equally baffling. Like why do you have to stretch guitar strings, seriously... You can put people on the moon and have a super computer in your pocket but can't make a machine to pre-stretch strings... I've also just bought a les paul special. I love it, but I was also baffled by such a low engineered solution for the bridge. In addition to what you mentioned, I also see the post screws are a really sloppy fit into the body inserts. I was thinking of tightening it all up with plumbing tape, but then I thought, that will deaden the vibration between string and body... so didn't. Anyway despite the low-tech nature of the whole setup, I don't actually think it matter all that much. It's all under the tension of the strings anyway and there is some beauty in its simplicity, and they do sound great. But I agree with you, sometimes you scratch your head with some of this stuff. I guess that's why PRS has made so much money LOL.

I have the Left handed 2021 LP Special. And the intonation was horrible. I bought an after market tailpiece which had movable blocks so to be able to set the intonation. Took it to a tech and I still had trouble with intonation. There was half an inch difference between the 12th fret to center of the tail piece and the top nut. Couldn't get it to intonate at all. Finally after much frustration I took the aftermarket one back off and placed what I thought was the original tailpiece back on the guitar. Turned out to be an Epiphone one that came off a project experiment guitar that I've been toying around with pickups and wiring for a while. Lo and behold, two homemade shims from paper set the intonation!!!! 😮 I shit you not. A Chinese tail piece fixed a $1700 guitar.

From a functional standpoint, it's a non-issue. With the strings under tension there is no problem with playability. From a cosmetic standpoint, my OCD might have a problem with it.
@tuna22lm

I saw one guy that had the exact same problem with the exact same bridge so he took a flat washer from a tone or volume control nob. He then cut through one part of the washer then bent it up and to the side then slid it onto the threaded post and then placed the bridge on top of that and that worked the washer acts like a spacer that cured that problem. But that definitely is manufacturing problem the tolerance for the bridge and post is way to much in the machining process that should be corrected, maybe if a lot more people complained about it then they might fix it.

I've got the 2019 Gibson Les Paul special double cut cherry and it's got a extra wide wrap around bridge that doesn't have any play. I've also got the Epiphone inspired by Gibson Les Paul special single cut and it's got a wrap around bridge just like yours and it has a tiny bit of play but between the string tension and the Allen set screw it locks into place pretty good but I adjusted it with tension on the strings so it cut little groves into the post so the set screw really locks into it pretty good, but that's because of the grooves the set screw cut into the post when I adjusted the height of the post with tension on the strings and bridge. Maybe try that and see if it cuts grooves into the post. Of you don't like it you have brand new ones too replace it but I bet it will work.

EVERY wraparound guitar bridge I have ever seen fits like that. Everything from a $200 BC Rich Warlock, up to your guitar. They seem to make all of the stop tailpiece studs the same measurements, and then use them for the wraparound bridge as a blanket application. The wraparound bridges show how glaring the difference is, because the string tension pulls them up in back. The strings pull in a different way when it is just the stop tail, so it's not as noticeable.

I just did a repair on a 2011 LP Jr with the same style tailpiece. That was MUCH tighter that either of the tails and studs you have shown. My guess is Gibson decided to save a little money and kept the old stand offs but moded the bridges themselves to not be as beefy. Happens all the time in manufacturing where changes get made without thinking of the consequences of said changes. My Mockingbird was much tighter as well. I would look into different posts at the very least. That added pressure up high will probably over time produce the same issue I repaired with the hole oblonging underneath and allowing the whole bridge to tilt forward making stable tuning impossible.

I have the same concern with my 2020 Gibson LP Jr. The tailpiece is angled. I put a set of 11-48 stings on and wondered if it was angled because the increased string tension. But I guess it must be a LP Jr. issue. I also worry about the studs that screw straight into the body. They do not look sturdy. I want to put thicker strings on, but not sure if the studs will hold. The USA production Les Paul Standard's studs screw into bushings which look more stable ((instead of straight into the body like the LP Jr.).

@@hoganshideout I have now installed the TonePros VS1 C bridge studs. It is easy to exchange them. I have kept the original Gibson inserts (that implies that you can take the cheapest inserts from TonePro, as you will not need them anyway, but ensure to have the right material for the screws, which in my case is steel with chrome, and US threads (they do also exist in metric)). Now the original Gibson wraparound bridge sits flat and the strings are well in place - the very first time! This now allows a perfect tuning across all the fretboard - and, in case you have to exchange just one string, that is also much easier, as you can now take off the bridge (after lowing the strings only a bit) to the top rather than the back. I am happy again, but still do not understand why Gibson still uses those studs that are designed so badly? And this after so many years and so many sold guitars? We should all send Gibson the bills for the TonePros ...

I was told, the play is intentional .. it allows some leighway when adjusting height ..say treble side down and leaving bass as is. Kinda makes some sense, but the obvious kicker to that argument is that locking post systems exist and presumably can be clamped with differing bass and treble heights. I do see the logic if bass and treble were vastly different height tho as without slack it would stress torque the studs. Edit… I see this is covered in an earlier reply, sorry for duplicating. I’m going to fit the TonePros posts anyway and see what passive fit is like, if my bass and treble height are similar I’ll lock it up, if there is quite a cant or slope,I’ll either leave it passive or just snug up the lock part so as not to stress the post holes into the wood.
@PeterSchuett
@PeterSchuett 10 ай бұрын
@@mikebarnard2689 I can only believe that it is intentional to some extend. On my SG it was so bad that I could not fix the bridge so that the small compensation extensions could come into play. The bridge angle, which should be close to zero, was simply much too big. So it lost the possibility to compensate. I cannot believe that that is intentional. Also, I was told that those Gibson bridges came in the 1960ies with studs with screws on top - like the TonePros have today. The simple ones Gibson uses today are cheaper and saves Gibson some money …

Regarding all the hate in the comments. This is a reproduction of a guitar that was made well over half 100 years ago (1950s). The tail piece is original '50s spec and is period correct. Gibson isn't "cutting corners", "being cheap" or "failing to do a good job", blah blah blah they are keeping with the original vintage design. Could it be improved upon? Yep, that's why there's a whole after market full of upgrades. Purists would be complaining if Gibson changed the original specifications. Gibson can't win either way. So, they stuck with the OG design and I applaud them for it. Now we can play a modern reproduction of a classic guitar for a “reasonable” price and love it with all of its quirks and shortcomings.

The engineering in the 50s wasn't as sloppy as you think it was. This is not fine tolerance engineering even for the 1950s. This video is in my experience misleading. The problem is that if you back the bridge off it will as noted tilt which will bring the top of the bridge closer to the nut, negating the effect of backing it off. If you back it off more the problem is increased. When it tilts a lot it starts to get really noisy at the bridge and the guitar sounds harsh and shrill. Search the internet on how to tame a harsh Junior. The solution is to put the bridge in flush with the studs and back off carefully. It will get as good as it is going to get way before you get a lot of tilt. Not perfect, since it is just a straight bar. When you don’t have a lot of tilt the guitar will come alive and sound like you hoped for. At least it did with mine after I went in and corrected what the “expert” had done when I took it to him to set the guitar up.

They’re all like that. You’re not going to find a Gibson made one that doesn’t do that. I believe Mojoaxe, Faber Corsa, or maybe some other boutique parts manufacturer makes one that will take care of that issue. I never had a problem with it. Aesthetically, it’s appalling.. but shouldn’t really do much. Some commin problems with bridges like that are: not being able to intonate because of the neck angle.. so the bridge is on the brink of coming out of the posts. Another issue is not being able to get the action low enough because of the tilt and a shallow neck angle. There isn’t much you can do but buy a better part made by another company. Actually, there is one thing you can do. You go to a hardware store, look for a 1/2 inch or 1/4 inch washer.. cut it to make it c shaped. Stick it in between the post head and bridge slot. It has to be pretty thin. I’ve done it before. Just gotta go through trial and error. Unfortunately, I didn’t take measurements with a caliper. Hope this helps.

@@hoganshideout That’s the best course of action! If you want to keep stock. I remember this vaguely, but I think I put the c washer/shim on the side closest to the bridge, because if you put on the back side I believe it starts to bend, and the bridge tilts very slightly because of it being intonated and loss of overall contact between the bridge slot and post.
