I actually sold my '61 335 Reissue because at the time I felt like I wasn't worthy of such a great guitar. Now I strongly regret selling it as the prices have skyrocketed since then and it was the best guitar I've ever owned
@steppenwolf_6662 ай бұрын
I regret selling all my guitars, ~1982. My best, a '68 black Les Paul Custom, was stolen in '80. That really discouraged me. It wasn't a good time in my life. Divorce. An accident that left my right hand unusable - though I can play using a thumbpick, it's just not the same. Ahh... a mid-70s white Strat, a mid 70s LP Deluxe in a beautiful tobacco brown burst with IIRC P-90s, an Ovation Legend, and a magical Guild S300D solid body with 24 frets, DiMarzio Super Distortions, phase switch... I could just cry. But, it's ok. I'm rebuilding. I've recently acquired a Fender Player II Jazzmaster with rosewood fingerboard in coral red from Alamo Music in TX and a Fender Player II Stratocaster HSS in aquatone blue with maple fingerboard from Sweetwater (Thanks, Jake!) and an acoustic... ah, well, I digress. General rule of thumb: never sell, unless for tidy profit. Peace.

When the time comes for new pickups I VERY HIGHLY recommend a set of wolfetone Dr vintage PAF's. I've owned and played dozens of PAF style pickups, Duncan to bare knuckle, lollar to ox4, manlius to throbak...there's no shortage of fantastic pickups out there, but the Dr vintage set has yet to be knocked out out of my #1 guitar. They've got all the buzzwords you'd want, clear, articulate, dynamic, beautiful attack, and most importantly, that mid-range quack/honk that just nails the old school sound. I've been fortunate enough to play quite a few vintage Gibson's fitted with PAF's and while all old PAF's are different, there is a characteristic thread throughout and the wolfetones nail it. Wolfe is also a great guy to work with, customer service is second to none.

Is Memphis gone? My 335 is made there. Was always hoping to go see where it was born. I play it through an original magnatone and there are days where the tone is just so perfect at every tone/toggle position that I could just happily live in a single note indefinitely. I always hear people say the "If you're gonna have 4 guitars" thing concerning this guitar's place among the classics. I say START with the 335.

I sold all my Gibson’s because of the “authentic” video: Two Figured ES335s, a Les Paul Standard HP, a Hummingbird, and a Songwriter. Still have an R9 I’m on the fence about. All lefties. Vastly prefer the Collings I bought as replacements. The R9 is hard to let go, but I too felt (and still feel)very alienated by the video.

This is really fascinating. I know it wasn’t just me that felt that way but it’s still shocking when you hear somebody else actually say it. Wow. Right with you on Collings of course. Was out at lunch today, and the place we ate was playing BB King and SRV tunes. I got to thinking noone can sound like these musicians, but the music they created would not have been the same if BB King played a Strat and SRV played a ES-335. Its a symbiotic relationship, the instrument and is pallet of sounds shapes the player and the music they compose, but itself not creating it. Keep exploring with the 335, I bet it will take you surprising places.

Mick, as much as Blue is your guitar, the 335 is equally so. You sound at home on this guitar, comfortable, but not in the normal Strat-y/SRV kind of way. This brings out another side of you, not entirely dissimilar, but just different enough to make this guitar equally a part of you. I’m glad you didn’t sell it. Also, I couldn’t stop laughing at your listing the guitars at the end! Absolutely perfect execution there, especially with editing it in through the playing.

I'm glad you could get over it, but I just couldn't and sold my 3 Gibsons. I personally felt I couldn't rep them. Not like it matters to them, but it does to me. Maybe one day I'll get over it. There's a tour of the Memphis factory and how these were made video, its a wonderful watch, these and others from there were done on the original machinery from the early days. There were multiple special runs of various models which are unlikely to be repeated outside the custom shop. Mick no idea why you'd get such a downer on Gibson you'd actually sell this treasure, I've a 330L its unique and a joy to play. All Companies go through changes (CBS Fender anyone) but the Memphis legacy will remain in the guitars the factory produced and the hours of pleasure people get from them.
@ThatPedalShow5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you’re ultimately correct. And a pragmatic view of things would lead to the same conclusion. However, I’m in this very weird position in life where I know a lot of the people who make my gear. And their spirit is imbued in that - their human spirit and good people - and it means a great deal to me. Okay, Fender is probably the exception, but even in that giant corporation I know quite a lot of very passionate people. The reason I bought this guitar in the first place was because I was struck by the passion of the Memphis plant and the people who worked there. But then Henry.... and all that. It was like they actually hated their customers. The. JC came in and it was all looking great. And then boom, what are they doing!? Ha! So it was a long souring, followed by some hope, and then a squirt of lemon and salt in the eye. Time to make margaritas I guess!

How did I guess!? Memphis was a magic place. Hope they’ve managed to transfer it to Nashville.

Your playing at the end of the vlog is exactly why you need this guitar. As you rightly said it is a perfect foil for the strat. I find exactly the same thing when i switch between my Strat and my 335, it’s like another part of me gets to speak.

Finally the video I was waiting for ! I remember Mick wanting an ES335 and I had seen this blonde one on the videos since last year but I could never know if it was his or he borrowed it from someone else. Well now I know! Also Mick, could you please upload the video of when you bought this beauty from Andertons?

I don't remotely want to, by omission, slight Dan, but Mick's playing is ridiculously on point all the time. Being around the same age, with similar influences, his sound and style speaks to me louder than a wall of 4x12s.

Thank you Sir! No slighting at all - different things speak to different people. Very kind words, thank you!

Oh no! I really did not need to know that there are 335s out there without binding… That blonde is gorgeous without it! If I ever won a lottery I would be after a custom built 50’s spec Les Paul without binding, whether it would be a Gibson or not is a whole other question I don’t have to worry about for now ;-)

The hardest job I had with my semi-hollow (Hofner Verythin) was getting the string gauge right. I eventually settled on 11's too.

Digging what the Gibson pulls out of you, Mick. You played your ass off, and that TONE !
