this was my first electric I got myself when I was 15. it was brand new. I ordered it in 2000 and it's serial number says it is a 1998, identical to this 1 minus the covers. I swapped put the bridge to our fave pickup a 57😊. still have it to this day. in need of a heavy fret dress or maybe even a refret. great guitar. I even had a flight case made for it. for a 1st guitar u could do alot worse. I came across a gold gibson full size vibrola this year I plan on having installed when I bring it in. Will throw some gold hardware on it too! cheers!

Another nice looking guitar Gary. Seems plausible it ended up with a 498 in the bridge courtesy of pickup stock issues at the Nashville plant as you suggest. Interestingly, I believe the short lived (2008-2011) Robot SG specials had a 490/498 config. As a side note, my Wine Red 2006 special looks similar to that Ebony 2010, as I also added two of Gibsons chrome covers to its naked 490s about 15 years ago.

Hi Chris :-) It seems there's a dealership upgrade which would be easy to do with the 'quick connect' system available on the PCB so I'll have a punt at the shroud fittings taking place at the same time. I lie the shrouds, very classy. Speaking of robots, there a 1st edition Les Paul from 2007 coming up in a bit. Cheers, Gary :-)

2010 was just a great year for Gibson. I saw several interesting signature models launched that year which are valuable today, and got the feeling that the USA side wanted to keep up with the quality. Even 2009s and 2012s aren't as good in my opinion. I have tried many Les Pauls, I stayed with a Standard and a Junior, both 2010.

Hi Jaime :-) Yes, they did the Stealth, the LP Baritone and Slash's AFD in that year. I like the way they find an excuse to tempt us with something different from time to time. I don't currently own a Gibson but my 'go to' would be a Studio from the good wood era. Cheers, Gary :-)

Hi Peter :-) The first taste is through the eye then it's the the feel of it. It really is weird that you can pick some guitars up and you don't want to put them down or give them back! It's a good thing we don't all like the same instrument - we need to mix up the guitar gene pool. Cheers, Gary :-)

Hi Gary, that a great sounding guitar. I think you're probably right when you say that Gibson probably ran out of the usual pickups so put something else in until the next batch arrived at the factory. I can't think of another reason for it. It's not very likely that someone had a custom SG special made to their own spec. BTW I love the LP and can't put it down. There's a link to your channel on the first post. If half of my regular viewers sub to your channel you may get a dozen more subscribers :)

Hi Rod :-) Turns out it was a dealership upgrade! I suppose at least with a PCB you can install a plug 'n' play pickup so that no-one knows you've even been in there. I can only guess that the shrouds were done at the same time. Thanks so much for the link, Rod :-) I'm so happy you like that guitar, you don't see them about with the mini humbuckers. Certainly though, Gibson do change specifications from time to time. I like their 'seconds'. They sell them to their employees then the staff raid the parts shop and bung all the best gear they can find in them hahahaha. Cheers, Gary :-)

Hahahaha, hi Steve :-) Ah yes, William Payne. Although I always thought that Payne's Grey was a mixture of black, ultramarine, and ochre - hmm, you may have a point :-) We need to Christen that tune - any ideas?
