I skipped the unboxing, but finally, here is the review of my newly acquired Gibson SG Standard. This is a 2016 USA Gibson SG. I swore I would never play or own an SG. Did I make a mistake? Lack of judgement? What caused me to change my mind?

I’ve been playing for almost 30 years and never liked the look of the SG. I took a 2000 Standard SG on trade a couple years back. I finally got it set up recently and man…I love the SG. I’m traditionally a tele guy and the SG reminds me of a beefed up tele. It is quickly becoming one of my favorite guitars.

Man I know what you mean. Never cared for the shape either but oh how well it plays! I still need a Tele in my arsenal.

SGs definitely have that Tele cut through the mix vibe. I have a few SGs (Gibson), and they also have a really once acoustic tone to them. They are quite loud unplugged too.

Two guitars that I’ve NEVER liked, but now actually prefer…..are the SG and Tele. Especially, the tele. I love the simplicity of it. But, the sound of the SG is spectacular, as well. Great work-house of a guitar

Same. I've never liked the look of the SG and the tele, so my first guitars were Strat and Les Paul. I still own them, but now I got older I must admit than SG and Tele are easier to play. The SG is very confortable with full access to higher notes. The Tele is more simple than a Strat and these days with pedals and multichannel amps, a guitar doesn't really need 3 pickups. It's just a lingering holdover from the past because it's the iconic Strat look. And if like me you don't use the vibrato bar, this one just makes the tuning painful.

@@tagadabrothersband Very well said... The more of a student of the instrument I become, the more I love the simplicity of the Tele. Especially, now that I've put a single coil-sized humbucker in the bridge. I cover any genre (a player of my age) wants to cover.

@@stancoleshill8925 I'm sure a lot of people would agree. Maybe it's my old age these days, or the fact that guitar is a 2nd instrument. But I just want a guitar that's very simple without a lot going on, that I really only need to get a few tones, at the most. My amp is the same way. I plug straight in, and short of a very little bit of reverb/delay, and a mini Tumnus pedal, there's nothing going on. And, I want the damn thing to stay in tune. So, far my cheap MIM tele stays in tune the best. I come to love a single-coil sized humbucker in the bridge of a hardtail Tele with almost any combination of blues-specific neck pups. I just have a toggle for the P/u selector and a volume knob....and it's a hardtail. I've come to absolutely love the simplicity of it. Not to say you can't get that with a strat, I just prefer the bite from the bridge on my tele. Not sure what you mean by changing out components through. I've never had an issue there, although like I said I don't have a lot going on with any of my guitars. Who knows... I may get the inspiration to get a hardtail strat with the exact same configuration one of these days. Thanks for the reply! 👍

I've been playing SG's since the 1980's. Anyone watching and wondering... Gibson frets are nickel not stainless. Also... Gibson pleks their necks, so the frets are usually nice and level up and down the fretboard. If you like faster necks, check out the '61 Standard with the small pickguard. They're hand wired (the batwing SG's are PCB) and most of the '61's, at least the current ones, have hotter pickups than the 490's. I use my '61 SG's for metal and they can get the chug out even though they're not considered high output but the do use A5 magnets.

I just purchased this guitar. Absolutely gorgeous and plays well. super comfy and sounds awesome. Overlooked due to being in the shadow of the Les Paul but I prefer this to my Les Paul due to the lack of weight and you can play with these for hours and the ergonomics of the design. Footnote, I also own an Epiphone SG which is also a great guitar and gave me first taste for these guitars - great tone and very playable.

Similar backstory. Just got an Epiphone SG. The neck dive is a drag but I use a wide bass strap which holds it ok. Very nice, wide neck. I put GFS Mean 90's in it as I prefer P90's over HB's. Always liked the look and sound of the SG, although I started on guitar at 12 by 13 after hearing Led Zeppelin ll I decided because of John Paul Jones I loved the sound of the bass. So my first bass was an Gibson EB-0, mostly because I discovered Cream and Jack Bruce, with the EB-0 looks like a bass version of the SG. I now play both guitar an and bass. I never did get a Gibson SG, but I did get a Epiphone SG. I spend my money on basses if I played guitar more then bass I would probably get a Gibson. I just think the sound of the SG is a hard rock machine, Angus Young and Toni Iommi.

The Gibson factories were having some quality control issues that increased over the late 00s and 10s (not at bad as the internet would have you believe but definitely true). This has started to become hugely rectified since about the 2020 lines forward after the new ceo took over in I think 2018. That's why you'll notice some changes from your 2016 to current models, like the Chrome Grover tuners over the green Kluson ones for example. If you love this guitar during some of the lesser years of quality control (again not as bad as many on the net will have you believe, many or most guitars still left in fine shape, like yours it sounds like) then you definitely know it's a guitar you vibe with!

I have heard a lots of KZbinrs complain of QC concerns. Seriously I have none for whatever reason. As for the tuners, I prefer the slime colored plastic ones on my SG. I have plenty of modern guitars with chrome. Thanks for the reassurance that not all Gibsons of that era necessarily came off the line with problems. I would wholeheartedly agree!

Gibson has a reputation online for having poor quality control, and for things like fit and finish some of it is warranted. But for what actually matters, how well the guitar actually plays and sounds, Gibson's been knocking it out in recent years. They've incorporated the Plek machine into their manufacturing process for the American line of guitars, and those necks have been coming out absolutely perfect in my experience.

I've a 1989 Gibson SG-90 single. Its an oddball with only a single double Humbucker. This guitar is built for Lead guitar solos is what it does best. It has 24 frets and two pots, volume & tone. The volume is a pushbutton, rhythm & lead position. The neck is long and thinner than a norm SG, it joins the body at the 21st fret and not the 19th like a lot of SG's. I am a Les Paul guy and always will be. You are absolutely spot on though about how an LP just wants to tip backwards off your right thigh when you sit down playing it. I find it infuriating and have to keep adjusting it fwds as I play and that is not easy if the moment it wants to tip back happens at a critical moment in the song! One can alleviate that by pointing your right thigh almost 90 degrees out from your left leg with the guitar neck pointing in the direction of your left leg and slightly downwards. Also the chunky mahogany body with no belly cut really digs into my right ribs just under the pectoral! ....then there's that bloody G-string which keeps going out of tune!! haha playing an LP can be a serious workout, a fight almost, but it's so rewarding and I love it. Because of these things I would never recommend an LP or even a copy shaped liked one to a beginner, no matter how much they want to be Slash! As for an SG, I have never really hunkered after one....UNTIL about 6 months ago when I saw the lead guitarist of Greta Van Fleet playing a beautiful '61 SG with the shiny tremolo unit! Now I am a convert and I NEED one!!! I would never use the tremolo but the versions with the tremolo have such a lovely classic look with that big shiny bit of chrome at the back with the Gibson Firebird (i think it is) on it. Also it seems that whereas an LP can get really mushy/muddy in the mids when strumming chords, the SG has greater clarity. Great Vid btw. p.s. I think the knobs are called 'Witches Hat' kbobs.

So apparently my SG standard came with Gibson Deluxe tuners which are the plastic tulip style. From what I have seen online, those were a feature of the SG Tribute version. Mine is not a tribute from what I can tell otherwise. Basically, I'm not entirely sure why it has those tuners. I received it used from the original owner. Either way, they seem to keep tune very very well!

I know SGs have a negative reputation for a number of reasons, but I will say that I have kept my 2006 for all these years, and didn't let go of it during the pandemic. I would not recommend anything heavier than 10-46 strings; I've tried a few brands, and I would say the D'addario NYXL play the best. Any heavier than 10's you might damage the neck joint. Stock pickups are great, 490R in the neck, 498T in the bridge, same set in the Les Paul Custom. Nice liquid tone in the middle position, particularly through a Mesa vintage mode.

You didn't touch on the subject that even though it's 24.75 scale, the neck feels long due to the neck joining the body at the 19th fret. I have that guitar and it is light and I can play anything on it. But I do have to say that it is rather lower quality than I expected. I also have a Gibson les Paul from the custom shop. It appears that with Gibson you have to go into the custom shop and spend 6K or more to get the commensurate quality, fit and finish that you get with a 2K PRs or even Fender Pro II Strat. I could be wrong but that's my take....with that said, the SG is my go to guitar on a daily basis for rock, metal and blues,
