I think one of the biggest irritations of this tactic is that Gibson will sue a company for adopting one of their designs and improving them and making them better and being very successful with them. In cases like ESP Explorer, Gibson stopped them from making those guitars but then never take any note from the success. Just keep pumping out the same shit that we were before that people weren't buying. They will learn to like it, be Gibson says so!

The funny part of it is Gibson C&D'd ESP because ESP copied the Explorer with the MX - then a few years ago, Gibson re-release the '84 Explorer, and their Epiphone version is a direct copy of the MX220 - same control knob and toggle layout, even comes with EMGs! So they sue someone for copying their design, and then copy the design of the person they sued for copying their design! Gibson are kinda like the senile grandad of the guitar world

If Gibson wants us to play original then we all should be playing O. W. Appleton guitars as that's were they got their idea after he came to Gibson to try to get them to market his idea. 10 years later they make the Les Paul. Looks very much like Appleton's design.

Counterfeit is different than taking a blank piece of wood and turning it into a comfortable guitar that happens to be a popular shape. People buy what they like and if you didnt file the paperwork back in the day dont try and kill competition in 2019

Well you can't copyright a design, they are trademarked. Either way, I love my Dean Cadillac, Vintage V100 Icon, Agile Ghost (1st Gen), Harley Benton CST-24, Slick SL51, and even my SX Vintage Series Custom Handmade Bass.

I'll tell you another funny thing Gibson has just done. They owned the Oberheim synthesizer brand (think "Jump"), and were recently in the news getting a lot of good karma, as they gave that name back to Tom Oberheim (the brand's creator, these days in his 80's, who sold off the company decades ago and has since been making synths under the Marion Systems and Tom Oberheim names). This is similar to Yamaha recently giving the Sequential brand back to Dave Smith (Dave Smith Instruments since renamed themselves back to Sequential) Anyhow, it's just come out that Behringer sued Gibson saying they didn't use Oberheim to make any hardware, just leased it out to people making VSTs (eg. Arturia).. and Behringer won that case. So it turns out Gibson were boasting about all this generosity of giving the name back and getting good press out of it.. but it was already not theirs anymore to give back lol

I love Gibson. I hope they continue to recover from their awful prior leadership.
