I'm there right now, but decided to pull the 2000 4.0 OHV engine with 101k miles from new. I was chasing high fuel trims concluding we had a head issue after a compression test. THEN while choosing to still drive the truck, the head gaskets blew catching it just in time not to milkshake bad. After pulling the engine completely apart, found both heads cracked between the valves #3 & #4 and all the bearings to be slightly worn a bit not bad but worth replacing along with new rings etc. The engine suffered from a long term vac leak (wife's daily driver) and the oil was sludged thick meaning every moving part in the engine needed to be inspected. Kings heads (new complete) and Rockauto parts order was about $1,450 bearings rings heads & bolts gaskets seals HV Melling oil pump timing kit rockers pushrods. Now to super clean everything as parts trickle in. The repair costs equals 2-truck payments being paid off for almost 18 years now. Someone want to do some math on that?

Had to come back to see how you did the rocker arm replacement. Decided to take lifters apart and clean em to save money. They look great and a lot of carap & milkshake came out of a few. Maybe get the engine back in the truck in 2-days. THANKS Gibson for doing this video. It has really helped me in this adventure.

For those fuel rail bolts I found a 5mm socket fits perfectly over the torx male head and they spun out effortlessly. Edit : 5mm socket

What tools did you use to get the rocker arm assemblies apart and cleaned up? Looked like a punch, mallet, extension, and a socket? Also how critical is it to get everything spaced back together exactly how it was? Looking to clean up mine after a head job. Pretty goopy. Thanks!

If you would of had a vise it would of helped a hell of a lot better. Plus you don't have to take both Pins out of them rocker arm assblys one side. Them alum holders will just slide right off and trying to use a socket and a hammer to pop them on you can damage the shaft. You should of painted the intake manifold inside and all over. found out the engine runs smoother with then intake runners painted or powder coated

Great video. Do You know where the engine id number is located. I have a ford explorer 2nd gen with a engine that looks the same.

Is it cheaper to have the heads machined or buy remanufactured heads? I'm not sure what is best to do. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks in advance

If you have the original Ford heads I would machine them it was about 150 per head I had to pay a little extra because a couple guids had to be replaced

@@GibsonGarage same answer if a valve seat was the issue? just curious since im doing mine this week.
@GibsonGarage
@GibsonGarage 2 жыл бұрын
@@Robert-bm5fz it comes down to pricing for me depends on how much the machine work will cost to fix the valve seat. If all it needs is a quick lapping then keep the heads

@@Robert-bm5fz For this engine 100% buy new heads. The area between the valves is very weak and is the only fail point on the engine. Very common to crack. If the truck is clean and you want to keep it, new heads are improved and will last another 30 years. The engine is otherwise very good. Do your research.

JUST GETTIN BACK TOGETHER AFTER 127K DEATH RATTLE. IVE HELPED PULL ENGINES IN THE PAST,BUT THIS ( AT 52 YRS ,IS MY FIRST). ONE HAS TO MARVEL AT THE HISTORY AND THE WAY THE MULTITUDE OF VARIABLES COME TOGETHER TO MAKE THESE ENGINES SING.THE FUEL INJECTION, THE SPARK,THE PISTONS,THE LIFTERS AND SPRINGS . NOT TO MENTION THE VACUUME AND SENSORS ALL WORKING IN UNISON ,DOING WHAT THEYRE BUILT TO DO AT THE EXACT INSTANT THEY NEED TO DO IT!! IT REALLY IS INCREDIBLE, AND THEN YOU COME ACROSS SOME "IDIOT-GEENEERING,THAT MAKES YOU SCRATCH YOUR HEAD,THEN START CUSSIN UP A STORM AND ABOUT READY TO START SLINGING TOOLS OR PARTS.OR BOTH!! ASPIRING ENGINEERS, SHOULD HAVE TO SPEND A YEAR( MINIMUM) ON THEIR TOOLS,EVERYDAY!! TEARING INTO,BREAKING DOWN AND REBUILDING...JUST FOR BETTER UNDERSTANDING!!

The ohv design is real tall compared to the ohc. The valve covers are way taller. Guess this engine never overheated, head warping happens to these all the time.

I tried to buy new rockers for mine, they aren't available right now. I'll come back and do them later if necessary. My lifters, I just disassembled and cleaned them. Saved big bucks there.

Did you buy new push rods? Or just put it back together and let it run?
