Gideon Levy urges Israelis to self-reflect and acknowledge responsibility for the war in Gaza

Gideon Levy, a columnist at Israel’s Haaretz newspaper, told Al Jazeera that he hopes that “Israelis will start to look upon themselves and not to blame the whole world for what’s going on”.
“The notion right now in Israel, as usual, is that the whole world is against us, the whole world is anti-Semitic and let’s get together, we the victims of the world. I don’t know how long it will last because there must be cracks,” he told Al Jazeera.
“Israelis should start to ask themselves, ‘Where is my responsibility’? Is it really only the world’s blame? Or maybe there were crimes of war in Gaza. Maybe our leaders should be brought to justice.”
These conversations are not yet being had, Levy said. Israeli society, he added, is living in total denial. “And the Israeli media, which is the biggest collaborator with the occupation, is the main reason why the discourse in Israel is still a blame game against the world,” he said.

Gideon's position seems impossible. These are his people, yet he really plays the part of the messenger forcing himself to compartmentalize and detach from his heart to allow his conscience and logic to command his feelings. I have to tell you that there is a solid group of Israelis who are feeling like this and I am one of them. Although I live in the U.S. now. The problem is the majority of Israelis have the exact mentality he describes. I see it too with my family and friends. My entire family lives in Israel. I am Israeli-born and I served in the IDF spokesperson 2000-2003 and I used to talk to him weekly. At the time he had a column covering the abuse of Palestinians in the West Bank and would call to ask for a response knowing all I will tell him each time is that the IDF will look into it. He knew it was bullshit and so did I. He has been occupying this "impossible" position for decades now. I absolutely adore him. Just him giving an interview to Al Jazeera will be considered treason by many Israelis.

I am a 66-year-old woman who grew up in Germany. We were taught about the Holocaust and to always remember it in school. I was staunchly pro-Israel and I condemned any criticism of Israeli politics as antisemitism, that was just the default position to take. The actions by the Israeli government and by the IDF during the Gaza war, the callous disregard for human life, and for Palestinian freedom that has come to light during the siege of Gaza have turned me away from any sympathy for Israel I had regained in the last years. I am glad that there are voices like Mr. Levy's in Israel still advocating for a level-headed view on Israeli politics and for basic human decency (which a lot of Israeli citizens seem to have lost in the past decades).
