During their trials in July 1990, Major Gideon Orkar and his fellow conspirators reportedly told the military tribunal that their coup against General Ibrahim Babangida was in three steps. The last step was that unless all the junior officers were killed, there would be no hiding place for the Babangida regime.
Two years later, on September 26, 1992, over 150 middle-grade officers died in a Lockheed C-130 plane crash.
The aim of this video is to recall the unfortunate event of that day and what really caused the crash of the Lockheed C-130? #HistoryVille #C130

Memory of this day will continue to haunt me. My father a civil servant attached to Kaduna air-force base Kaduna at the time. He had just returned from the U.S after completing his masters in mechanical engineering. He flew on that plane from Kaduna to Lagos but didn’t make the ill-fated flight back to Kaduna. He had gone to the airport twice but was sent back because the plane had mechanical issues. On the morning of the flight we took my father to the airport but he was not allowed on because it was full and some higher ranking officers had to go first. He was asked to return on the following Thursday to catch the same plane back to kaduna. He was pissed, he felt that he was cheated but didn’t know he cheated death. We hadn’t even left the airport before we heard the news. My father hugged myself, siblings and mother and cried. That was the only time in my life I ever saw my father cry. He lost a lot of friends in that crash, especially his best friend.

Thanks for bringing this memory back. This was the the worst military crash in Nigeria. The best mid level officers in that generation died in that crash. There was a captain who came late to board that flight. One of his fellow officers gave him a kick when he wanted to board. He went by road to Zaria. He broke down in tears when he learnt that his colleagues died in the plane the following day.

We heard from an unconfirmed source then that the Pilot that was to fly the plane refused to fly due to his not sure of the soundness of the engine. Subsequently,. Alabosun was drafted to fly the plane. It was a dark period in our history. As names of Victims were published in the dailies. I stand to be corrected, I think the crash victims were the first set of officers to be buried at Karamajigi cemetery at Lugbe.

Infact, Orkars coup really affected the MP Military Police as a corp because Capts Empere, Dakolo, Tolofari, Sgt Stephen Iyeke, Lt Col Mukoro himself was a neighbor and senior to my dad in NASMP Zaria. These officers and soldiers were mostly from the Military Police Corp. MP duties and powers was withered down drastically. Infact, Babangida almost ran them down to nothing as a deterrent to MP Corp.

The 'Chief' Military Pilot is not Alabesenu. He is Alabosun ... Wing Commander JP ALABOSUN. I know him. I know his family. We all grew up together as the NAF (Nigerian Air Force) Family. I saw same misspelling of the name from Nowa Omoigui's account. I just need this to be corrected for posterity. If you perhaps gain entrance to the Sam Ethnan Air Force Base Ikeja. A Two storey building is named after him. More still , you can reach out to 301HAG Unit of the Hercules C130H in Lagos, to get his real name. Also, a visit to the NAF HQ will help.

I am a film maker, it's not their fault, this kind of film will cost a lot to make, and if you don't tell the story in a way, ones life will be in danger. Remember IBB and some of them that may be responsible are still alive. This kind of story requires a long intensive research to dig facts for a movie of sort and have some millions of naira set aside to run away when the heat starts. I feel so sad after watching this video. I was 16 years old when this happened . I feel so sorry, I have to comment to see if I can find peace.

Are you sure of your so called "facts"? I wish to disagree with your purported story line. Those families who felt it knew it for what it was other than the "official narrative" forced down the throats of long suffering Nigerians. Revisit the motives, pls.
