The June 12, 1993, presidential election should have ended with Nigerians celebrating the end of another military dictatorship.
Instead, the citizens were faced with a new and more dangerous phase of military rule as Nigerian Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida and his cronies, in a flimsy attempt to disguise the continuation of their regime, annulled the elections, implemented a so-called interim national government, and postponed the military's exit from politics.
Babangida’s manoeuvrings did not only betray the Nigerian voters, who in the June 12 elections had overcome ethnic, religious, and regional rivalries in an effort to rid themselves of military rule but, tragically, brought such rivalries back to the political foreground.
The intention of General Babangida and his allies to disallow civilians a significant voice in government was proven by the brutal reaction of his military and security forces to the outcry which followed the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.
One month after the annulment in July 1993, over a hundred demonstrators were believed to have died in pro-democracy demonstrations.
Hundreds of human rights and pro-democracy activists, labour leaders, journalists, students, and workers were arrested in months to follow, without access to their families, defence counsel, or doctors, despite court orders granting their release on bail.
Media houses were proscribed, a number of journalists were detained while some were declared wanted by security agents.
New restrictive press regulations were decreed, thereby reneging on the promise Babangida had made in August 1985 after sacking the Muhammadu Buhari regime.
In this video, we shall take a look at...why General Ibrahim Babangida annulled the June 12, 1993, presidential election. The aftermath of the annulment, and the intrigues, causes and effects of the June 12 crisis. #HistoryVille #June12 #IbrahimBabangida

@@classiczexp7584 that’s why it’s always good to report honest news. There are intermarriages between Hausas & so many tribes in the. Fulanis overthrown Hausa Monarch during Danfodio’s Jihad. Since then they assimilated Hausa culture, but Nomadic Fulanis(the majority) still have their culture distinct from Hausas. I’m happy that News report & some Nnamdi Kanu’s messages are unmasking who is who in the North. The banditry, herdsmen & even Bokoharam terror are led by people that are entirely Not Hausas. I hope Hausa will rise up and reclaim what’s theirs.

But only few of you condemn them openly and in clear terms. For example, PMB is a Fulani man but how many Hausa people openly criticize him constructively on trivial issues. You can't keep being friends with a "Supposed" enemy and expect people to believe you're distinct. It's as simple as that.

MKO was a coup financier, he benefitted immensely financially from the khaki boys. He thought his closeness to the army boys especially IBB would guarantee him an accent to the Nigerian presidency. The northerners who controlled the army, and even the northern emirs did not want a power shift to the south. To add to that, some key figures in the south sold out Abiola, most notable the late Ooni of Ife who was also a business partner of the late emir of kano Ado Bayero. Conduct your own research. Even Fela the abami eda was no fan of MKO, hence the song I.T.T (International Thief Thief) which was a multinational that MKO headed in Nigeria. Had the same election been won by a northern candidate, power would have been transitioned to civilian rule from the military because power would have remained with the Northerns.
