Hey, I started using this as a base for my dog's food about a year ago. I've added things a long they way, I use ground chicken instead of canned, I added 2lbs of 97/3 ground beef, and 2 lbs of ground pork. I also added cauliflower, brussels sprouts, spinach and sunflower oil. But what I found in my research, is that sweet potato skins and bad for dogs, they find them difficult to digest them, so I started skinning them. And I cook the rice (brown long grain) in bone broth. And since no dog food is perfectly balanced, I added a multivitamin. to her dinner meal. She's 10 now, and I have found that since I started feeding her this alternate version of yours is that she has a lot more energy, seems happier and is NEVER bored of her food. She loves it, and we are happier that she seems a lot ore healthy. So thanks, and don't forget to peel those sweet potatoes.

@@kathleenrayner1234 they state several reasons. Commercial pet foods are using peas, Legumes and potatoes as fillers in place of the grains previously used when they went to grain free foods. Peas should not be given to dogs with kidney problems. High pea and legume in diets interacts negatively with taurine which is very important in their diet. I make something similar for my diabetic dog. I worked it all out on a spreadsheet, with nutritional values, calories, fat, carbs, etc, and my vet approved. She gave me a chart from a textbook showing what they need, which I tried to recreate in my recipe. I cook it in my big turkey roaster. My dog needs more calories because he lost a lot of weight, so mine includes lean beef, turkey and pork, all cooked, boiled and rinsed to remove as much fat as possible. It also includes a lot of frozen vegetables and dried beans, brown rice, barley, oatmeal, and whole wheat pasta. Your dog might need different stuff, but that’s what is working for ours. He had stopped eating completely, so we were desperate. He really loves this stuff though.

How long does a batch last your dogs?
@gaypreator85472 жыл бұрын
@@lunalight6732 that depends on the size of your dogs. Not to sound snarky. When I started I followed a recipe very much like this one - you get a feel for how much to make and how to freeze etc. I have a Carin Terrior and a Shih Tzu . I make approximate 5lb batches. Started with 10 lb batches but was just too much. The pounds are the meat. By the time you add eggs and miscellaneous it gets to be a lot. My dogs love it and have had amazing health changes. They were older when I changed to homemade. Good luck keep it simple and get used to making batches.🍀🍀

I make something very similar. Bag if mixed veggies, sweet potato, can of pumpkin, ground turkey, brown rice, beef liver, eggs with the shells (for the calcium), and some herbs for health and flavor. I do all of mine stove top but like the oven idea. Good food for the babies.

Circling back in case others were wondering about trying the recipe. I made this (substitutions included ground chuck, squash and zucchini for the broccoli) and added some blueberries because that’s what I had on hand. This was so incredibly easy to prepare. A food processor is a must to speed things along, but otherwise amazingly quick. My sons dog is also here for a bit while he travels and has never eaten homemade. Both dogs loved it, they are excited to eat and neither had any tummy issues. Each are 65 or so pounds, having it in bulk was super convenient. Thanks again for sharing. For those who are uncomfortable, perhaps cut it in half. I will be using this staple and balanced recipe going forward. : )

@stopthemadness40062 жыл бұрын
@Liz Firrigno I feed 2 cups twice a day. I alternate the meats as well, using grass fed turkey, chicken and always include red meats and fish when I can find low sodium. He loves sweet potatoes and pumpkin, you can add apples and greens. I do use the supplements suggested here, flax, and cod oil. I try to stay ahead with ample in the freezer. I use Royal Canine for labs and twice a week I reduce to a cup and a half of homemade and add a cup of dry. My vet offered very little guidance, mentioning he is at ideal weight, healthy coat, teeth, etc. I never thought I would make my dogs food, but with the recalls and nonsense with the pet foods, I feel this is a better option.

@RealLife_D_and_J2 жыл бұрын
Great to hear! As long as you keep the food in a sealed container it should last at least 6 months in the freezer. With our dogs and making 3 batches at a time we store their food in the freezer about 4 months without any issue.

@nicenna1309 ай бұрын
I might try this! Looks good. The only thing I noticed that may cause a problem is that the same container was used to make the final product. Any container that contained raw turkey should be thoroughly washed with hot water and dish detergent. Some raw turkey may be contaminated with salmonella or other bacteria that can cause food poisoning. That goes for washing all utensils or gloves that would have been used with the raw turkey step. If the final product was baked again for the appropriate time and at the right temperature before being frozen or refrigerated, it wouldn't be necessary to disinfect everything before reusing it.

yes! love seeing other recipes. I've been cooking our 2 senior pugs (10 yrs) and our toothless lil old lady yorkie (rescue, vet estimated about 14 yrs old) for over 5 yrs. Our pugs are chunky and our yorkie is at a great weight but we feed her fromm's pate for the most nutritional value and their stew for a 'treat' or topper. I use oats instead of rice, carrots, ground turkey or chicken/beef livers, green beans to be a low cal filler and add turmeric and a few shakes of black pepper. I avoid some things like eggs because the vet said that was a lot of phosphorus for our yorkie. We also feed a low cal fromm's kibble to our puglets to make sure they get the nutrition they need. Once we warm up their stew to just room temp we add a probiotic, brewer's yeast and fish oil - they love it. We only add the oats to make sure they have a healthy grain addition, or sometimes I use barley.
