Hey, I started using this as a base for my dog's food about a year ago. I've added things a long they way, I use ground chicken instead of canned, I added 2lbs of 97/3 ground beef, and 2 lbs of ground pork. I also added cauliflower, brussels sprouts, spinach and sunflower oil. But what I found in my research, is that sweet potato skins and bad for dogs, they find them difficult to digest them, so I started skinning them. And I cook the rice (brown long grain) in bone broth. And since no dog food is perfectly balanced, I added a multivitamin. to her dinner meal. She's 10 now, and I have found that since I started feeding her this alternate version of yours is that she has a lot more energy, seems happier and is NEVER bored of her food. She loves it, and we are happier that she seems a lot ore healthy. So thanks, and don't forget to peel those sweet potatoes.

I add beef, turkey or pork and livers or gizzards. My dogs do not tolerate chicken. I also use brocolli, carrots cauliflower and greenbeans for veggies, they do not digest peas well. I mix brown and white rice and add some turmeric. I also cook mine in the instant pot but I do not do 28 lbs so I can see why the oven is better.

@@judichristopher4604 I have never used a slow cooker. I put in my ingredients, add water or broth and it is done in 8 minutes. Once it is done, I do a manual release, add the rice and organ meat because I precook the liver and let it sit covered for 10 minutes to cook the rice. It is so easy! Circling back in case others were wondering about trying the recipe. I made this (substitutions included ground chuck, squash and zucchini for the broccoli) and added some blueberries because that’s what I had on hand. This was so incredibly easy to prepare. A food processor is a must to speed things along, but otherwise amazingly quick. My sons dog is also here for a bit while he travels and has never eaten homemade. Both dogs loved it, they are excited to eat and neither had any tummy issues. Each are 65 or so pounds, having it in bulk was super convenient. Thanks again for sharing. For those who are uncomfortable, perhaps cut it in half. I will be using this staple and balanced recipe going forward. : )

@Liz Firrigno I feed 2 cups twice a day. I alternate the meats as well, using grass fed turkey, chicken and always include red meats and fish when I can find low sodium. He loves sweet potatoes and pumpkin, you can add apples and greens. I do use the supplements suggested here, flax, and cod oil. I try to stay ahead with ample in the freezer. I use Royal Canine for labs and twice a week I reduce to a cup and a half of homemade and add a cup of dry. My vet offered very little guidance, mentioning he is at ideal weight, healthy coat, teeth, etc. I never thought I would make my dogs food, but with the recalls and nonsense with the pet foods, I feel this is a better option.

So I think it's pretty safe to say now in 6/22 that this recipe has probably doubled in price to make. At least at my walmart. So I agree with your recipe but I also add organ meat, chicken or calf livers, and gizzards and hearts. I have a 50% lean meat to 25% sweet potato and brown rice, and 25% of spinach, peas, and carrots. Which for a 1 week recipe as my boy is 60 lbs that I give him 12 oz. for every meal. Which amounts to 6lbs of lean meat with 2 lbs of it organ meats, then 3 lbs of rice and sweet potato, lastly 3 lbs of any greens, peas and carrots. I cook it all in my instant pot for 25 minutes. I also add in to the meal at every feeding, a teaspoon of either sunflower oil or coconut oil, some omega 3 oil and 1 1/2 tsp of calcium from ground up egg shells, my boy needs 3 tsp a day. I also give him 1 1/2 tsp of ground flax seed for fiber and lastly something for his old bones I heard about from Ceasar Milan which is called Happy Again, it supports healthy hips and joints. It's collagen, glucosamine, hyaluronic acid, and antioxidants. I really enjoyed your recipe and that you chopped it up in the food processor. Thank you for sharing your recipe and you did a great job for this being your first video ever! Very brave you are.

You actually made this look really easy. And what you call a "mess" was far from it. lol I was trying to figure out why you liked making a double batch because it seemed to make everything more difficult, but then I realized it's because then that allows you to use the whole can of pumpkin. Can't you buy a can that's half the size? It just seems like everything would be easier doing the normal-sized batch.

It is in the video description. But I will post here as well. Dog food (This makes about 28lbs) 5lbs Ground turkey or ground beef (more fat) Can chicken 6/12.5 oz cans 4.69 lbs Carrots 3 lbs Broccoli 2.5 lbs Sweet Potatoes 5 lbs Frozen peas 2.5 lbs Brown rice 8 cups Whole raw Eggs 1 dozen I get my ingredients from Sam’s Club. All but the peas and eggs. The total cost is about $40 Cook rice Chop or use a food processor for the following: Carrots Broccoli Sweet potatoes (leaving the skin on) Mix together the ground turkey, carrots, broccoli, & sweet potatoes Using a blender blend all dozen eggs, then pour over the mixture Cook on 350* 1 hr -1 1/2 hrs Once you take it out of the oven mix in the chicken and rice. Allow cooling for 10 minutes then add frozen peas. Put in freezer containers and freeze 1 container should contain a week or less worth of food. I use a 4 cup container for my two dogs.

So how many times a month do you make this recipe ? You have small dogs, I have an 85 pound dog. I’m scared to go through all this work and then we go through it quickly, which might get costly ? I’m not sure.
@RealLife_D_and_J
@RealLife_D_and_J 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the question. We do have small dogs so we only have to make this recipe every 3 1/2 months to feed our two 10lbs dogs. It goes without saying that if you are making this for a larger dog, since they will be eating more each day, this recipe will not last that long for your dog. For an 85lb dog, our recommendation is to feed 8.5 cups of this food per day. You would have to do the calculations to find out how long this recipe would last for your dog and either have to make it in bigger batches or make it more often. Only you can decide if this recipe makes sense financially for your situation.

Thank you for the question. I will try and answer the best I can, just keep in mind we are not experts and have never claimed to be. We have been using this dog food for years now and our dogs had just the opposite problem, they were getting too heavy. This dog food has them at a very healthy weight and keeps them there. Keep in mind our 2 dogs are less than 10lbs each and German Shepherds are big dogs, and although this dog food may work for them, I don't think it would be very cost-effective in the long run unless you could source the ingredients at a significant discount somewhere.

@@cynthiahodder6238 Of course. I used to make beef, chicken, lamb or fish. Just depended what was on sale when it was time to make a new batch. Mt dog was a blue Heeler and she wasn't a fussy eater. You may have to try different protiens and veg until you find a recipe your dog likes. Maybe make small batches until you hit a winner. I used to mix up the veg as well to keep it interesting. The other thing is to make home made bone broth and let it cook slowly for a full day or two until you get a jelly consistency. this is great for dog's joints.

The main recipe we use for our regular raw food is we use our meat grinder and buy a large box of chicken legs or wings and grind them up and then just add in some carrot and Kale and some Blueberries and mix it together and it actually cost us less than the kibble was costing us we do it this way because the chicken bones that grind up are the calcium for the dogs and every morning I break and egg ontop of the raw food.. it takes about 15 minute to grind up two entire boxes of chicken legs and wings and add the minced up carrot and Kale and etc and then freeze it in 1/2lb freezer bags and then we just have to pull out three bags the night before so that it thaws in the refrigerator and everytime we feed them we put three new bags in the fridge to thaw and it works great but our mixture is truly RAW
