Great video! You are a wonderful teacher. I want to learn how to AI my cows as keeping a bull is costly and inconvenient at times. Plus it would give me access to genetics from bulls I would otherwise not be able to afford. You’re right, as farmers we have to be self sufficient and mindful of our resources. Great video!!! I was a dairy science major in college, had my own Holsteins, etc. but never really knew how AI worked. My biggest problem was figuring out when the cows were in standing heat and when to breed.
@8tomtoms82 жыл бұрын
@Charming Chowder They tend to act differently, raise their tail a bit, other cows will try and jump up on them or vise versa. Sometimes they'll moo funny, have some clear discharge, etc. This is the problem, it can be really hard to tell when they come into heat and what stage of the heat cycle they are in. If you AI them at the wrong time, you just wasted a vile of semen, plus at least 21 more days.
@8tomtoms82 жыл бұрын
@Charming Chowder Keeping a dairy bull is expensive and dangerous. Plus, you only have one set of genetics. If you're trying to improve your herd, AI lets you select from a huge number of super high quality bulls of any breed. A lot of farmers have been killed by dairy bulls. They are much more aggressive than cows are.

Will you guys preg check her then after so long to make sure she is pregnant or does a veterinarian come and ultrasound sound her to check. Have been around bulls and artificial insemination both and by far artificial insemination is way safer. Dairy bulls can have a mean mentality about them sometimes as can some cows right after they give birth. I had a bull chase me one day never got me down he gave up and I got to the mule then got out of there. I was going to lock them on the yard but didn’t make it to the gate. We had a big metal pipe we carried when working with him he knew what that meant and got it between the eyes a couple of times. He backed right off when we hit him as he should have. I never went by him by myself after he chased me. Had another one on the cow yard follow me to the gate I got to the tractor before he could do anything. We once had a bull break the door on one of our cab tractors I was not around that day.

The cow is inseminated for the milk. Does the poor calf get any milk at all or everything is sold 😭😭
@triangleshiny2 жыл бұрын
not a farmer but i have done research. my understanding is the calf absolutely has to get the first milk, the colostrum, within a few hours of birth. without it the calf's immune system doesn't really develop. if there's an issue with the cow's colostrum (not enough, poor quality, she's sick, won't let the calf suckle for whatever reason, etc) there might be some stored or the calf might get some from a more productive cow. from then until weaning they're given milk, either from the cow directly, from the bulk tanks, or they get milk replacer. but from what i understand milk replacer costs a lot more than just giving the calf milk, and your average dairy cow is bred to make more milk than a calf could possibly drink. but yes, they do get milk while they still need it!
@elliesouza717 Жыл бұрын
Smh🙄
@HowFarmsWork Жыл бұрын
The calves should always get the colostrum. The milk from the cows can't be sold until the colostrum has left the milk and the milk has been sampled to ensure quality. For us that would be up to two weeks. We milked the fresh calved cows last of the herd and separated their milk to go to the calves. One cow had enough milk to feed several calves. Separating the calves at birth actually reduces the amount of calves that get killed by trampling and that way they can be placed in their own pen with fresh bedding.
