9:27 When we used to be on 38 we ran a picker, four row, new idea uni system It was a self-propelled. It also has a combine attachment, but we mainly used for picking in the end but we switched to 30 inches so we haven’t used it for quite a few years. My dad and Grandpa are looking to sell it to somebody who would maybe use it. I’m just putting out there if you are interested. We are located in northwest Iowa.

An IH 234 would be ideal picker, especially dismounting in short order, once mounting brackets are attached. Years ago setup few new 234's & delivered to farmer. A few come up for sale once in awhile...

Interesting discussion on the aerator and the picker. I can see good and bad in mounted vs. pull-type pickers. Owing to the terrain you're working in the mounted definitely would give more control by starting on the low side and working upwards. Regarding ground conditions, it comes down to the question of how wet is too wet.

My Dad and I bought a NI 325 2RN pull type in 1992. It was used, but in good shape. Check Stitzel's Equipment in Hamburg, PA. They have a lot of NI equipment and parts, or did. 40" rows were to match Draft horses, and tractor mounted stuff was built to match. As less in row stuff was done, corn rows got narrower. 20" is catching on now, and some people are planting 15" for silage, using Kemper heads on the choppers.

We still pick corn to we used to be wile row with my uncle 560 with mounted picker then we bought a pull type new idea wild row we picked with it for years then we got new planter and switched to narrow row so know we found a narrow row new idea it is hard you do run down some or you have to pick it but hand 🤚 and that takes time I would love to use my 1066 to pick corn but it’s so big so we use our smaller massy Ferguson

Your talking about getting stuck with the picker reminded me of the time as a teenager in the 60's helping my uncle pick in a very wet year. He was going backwards about as much as he was going forward. He was running a 2MH picker on an M pulling a barge box wagon. He wound up bolting a 4x4 to the back of the wagon, had the local weld shop fabricate a grill guard for the SMTA and bolted an old tire to the guard. With both of us running in 2nd gear, I followed close behind and when he hit a soft spot he would wave and I would come in and start pushing. Since the SMTA was geared a little faster than the M, it worked like a charm. Only got suck a couple more times after that. Farmer "big brain" stuff. lol. Love your videos.

Aaron. I told my brother about you guys looking for a like new New Idea picker. He said that he will contact you through Facebook. He bought his in 2003 from a farm action near here . He only used it for some custom work for his neighbors. He used it for only six years with less than sixty acres per year. When he purchased it, it still had the "DANGER KEEP HANDS AND FEET AWAY FROM MOVING PARTS " sign on both sides of the front of the picker. I looked at it just right after you mentioned that you're looking for a picker. Around 95% of the fingers are still in the husking bed. Chains looked like new, but dry from sitting for fifteen years. We're in eastern Iowa just north of Dubuque.

@@grantmagnuson4883That's a UniSystem. New Idea made them up to the 1980's. The power units/ engines were not the most reliable things. The corn picking unit was probably the best aspect of the machine. But parts are getting harder to come by for them as well. We had 1, and it was a nightmare to work on. Glad we got the power unit running long enough to get on the lowboy that hauled it away.

@@grantmagnuson4883 New Idea made a Uniharvester that was a self propelled husking bed with intercahngable heads for three or 4 row picking. Many had cabs and didn't limit you to wide rows, ie 4 row x 30" head. Just Google "New Idea Uniharvester"

The Good Older Pickers are Getting Harder & Harder to Find ! We Still Use an old 2 Row Pull Behind but we only pick about 35-40 Acres a Year Just to feed the Cattle & 3-4 Big Meat Hogs But Theirs Always something that needs to be fixed seams like ever year ! But for no more than we pick its still makes more sense to just patch up what we got & Just Git R Done ! Same type of Picker My Grand paw Got His Hand Ground up in Years n Years Ago (It Was Not as Bad as it sounds ) he still had all his fingers an stuff after they was sewed back together/on & ya couldn't hardly tell it had happen 30 years latter !

Aaron the hoodie I ordered arrived Fri. the 29th. Very cold weekend here in the Black Hills, so I gave the hoodie a test drive in the cold. I can report the hoodie was of excellent quality, and very warm. Had friends inquire about Gierok Farms. I grew up on a 350 acre dairy farm in the driftless area of the Kickapoo valley near Boaz Wisconsin. I can relate to farming on steep hillsides and ridges. Farmall's were the family's tractor of choice. Still have and continue use our 1939 Farmall H. You and the family take care, and be safe. I really enjoy your posts. GO PACKERS!

Very good points about taking the picker off, that 686 is in great shape. It'd be a shame to leave it covered up by the picker year after year collecting dirt in places you cannot clean. Then there's nothing more frustrating than being broken down when it's time to hit the field, "cheap" tractors aren't always cheap especially when you start heading to the parts counter.

There’s pros and cons to a mounted picker for sure. I would think you would have way better luck finding a New Idea 2 row pull type in almost new condition a lot easier than a mounted one. I’d just have your friend open the fields up with the combine to make it easy since you feed shelled corn as well.

Rear mounted picker on a 165 Massey is what I remember them using on my Dad's home farm in Tamarack. Probably was on an 800 Ford before that but I'm too young to remember. I think the picker was a Ford. Good for those side hills but of course it was only half as productive!

My father had a New Idea two row mounted on an Oliver 880; helping a friend pick their corn and I suspect they got it stuck and ended up breaking the transmission helical gear set that was the newly added feature the Oliver 880 model over the previous Super 88 model to get rid of gear whine. Tractor and picker were only about ten or twelve years old at the time. Tractor turned into my father's hot rod project that never got finished in the shed. He got as far as putting the motor in and two pistons had stuck while it had sat. Motor sits sideways on the rails where he last left it with the broken wood blocks and sledge, on the project for my brother and I. Based on all that, I'd recommend a pull-type picker! Modern self propelled combines are a tractor that sits most of the year (where mice do get in the wiring) and you can't swap out the tractor or use the tractor for other activities. Pull type gives more flexibility. Perhaps you can find steel wheels so the pull type can track better on your side hills.
