Anyone who's into the mug/pottery idea: don't worry about chasing down East Fork, look up local potters in your area! You'll support your local community and be able to choose exactly what you think your gift recipient will like the most from a variety of different styles. Not everybody likes Minimal Red Bowl, but between all your local potters (or Etsy potters!), there really is something for everyone!
@hanpear
@hanpear 10 ай бұрын
this is so true! makers markets around this time of year will definitely have local potters selling stuff for a similar price point, and maybe even in an aesthetic your giftee will appreciate even more. i will say to if you’re caught up on East Fork and if you happen to be in the Atlanta or Asheville area you can go in store and cut down on shipping 🫶

I would add one caveat to that wonderful gift-giving rule: give someone an upgraded version of a product they already use in an area where they would value it, I could totally see someone receiving that clay mixing bowl (as an upgrade to a metal mixing bowl) and then never using it because it's heavy and they don't enjoy having to be so careful with a mixing bowl that will smash into pieces if you accidentally drop it; I think if the "upgraded" version fundamentally changes the way in which someone uses a thing, then they're less likely to easily make use of it
@auntrori

I actually made that exact mistake! My sister loves to bake, so I bought some heavy Mason Cash (I think) bowls, and they were never used because, even though exactly what she'd use all the time, it was too heavy to cart around and had to be washed more carefully.

I love a beautiful serving dish. But for mixing bowls for my baking, metal can be used as a double boiler or over ice for things that need to be quickly cooled. Glass for things that need to be microwaved. 😊

As someone who doesn’t wear makeup, I think the gift I would love to receive from someone who is into makeup is some good brushes. I can never bring myself to buy them, and I usually wouldn’t know what to buy anyway. Just another idea for those in the comments. :)

Your gift guide from last year - specifically the philosophy of giving elevated versions of things people already like - lead me to give some of my most well-received Christmas gifts ever, so thank you for that! And thank you for using your energy to curate a mental boutique of wonderful items for the dark-age dwellers like me who never even considered that an unbreakable claw clip could be purchased

I didn’t remember your gift giving secret from last year but that’s similar what I’m doing for my sibling: she won’t repurchase her favorite moisturizer because it’s $30 so since I’m the one who gave the first bottle of it to them to begin with I’m getting her a new one (and will continue to give her a container of it for Channukkah every year for the rest of our lives if it will get her to use the moisturizer that makes them feel good!)

Thinking of your "exquisite version" theory, I ordered a claw clip and matching acetate hoops for my mom and I can't wait to give them to her! She's a midwife and is always so busy it doesn't make sense for her looks to be effortful but she loves to express herself with bright colors and chunky jewelry. I think she's going to love wearing the set with her scrubs and they'll be practical pieces that will last her a long time. I learned about the brand from you and I'm so grateful! Thank you as always for your sage guidance.

Fantastic things I own and love (and have also given as gifts with great success) : BATH - Cacala peshtemals, accept no substitute. So light and supple, 39x71 instead of typical bath towel 30x54, and where a set of six terry towels will take up a full washer load, six peshtemals is maybe 1/3 load. Big plus: pretty enough to also work as a throw. Bigger plus: waaaaaaaaaaaaaay less lint in your dryer, in your bathroom, on your person. My set of six has been our only bath towel action for almost ten years, and they're still like new. A pair of these in a suitable color is a great gift - even if your recipient prefers hugely thick heavy terry towels (WHY? IT'S LIKE DRYIN OFF WITH A DAMN CARPET), they can still be used as a cute blanket or beach towel. KITCHEN : Simple Human's motion-activated soap dispenser. Charges via USB, attractive, never again have the dilemma of "I need soap but my hands are covered with grease/scuzz/raw chicken pathogens." CANDLES : I know, the Lame Default Gift, but if you've got a devotee on your gift list, try a Nouvelle or two. Their big lovely white-crackle-glazed French pedestal urn style are actually a great value re: size/burn time, they're kinda niche so they'll be new/unheard of for many people, they have a lot of very natural/herbal scents, and they have dependably HUGE throw for those who've been burned (heh) by "I paid sixty entire dollars for this effing candle and I can only smell it when I'm six inches away." "Sweet Olive" and "Courtyard" are faves, and, bonus for gardeny types -- once empty they function as a little terracotta planter.

I love giving gifts, thought out, personal gifts to my closest loved ones. I get a thrill when they open it up and feel sort of a "gotcha!" moment when I hit bullseye of gift giving they didn't even know existed. However, this made me realize perhaps I am enjoying the gift giving more than they do the gift getting, and this year I pronounced to them all I am not doing Christmas gifts at all and I do not expect any in return. In fact, I am bailing on the whole holiday and doing a solo cruise in the Caribbean! It's gonna be an interesting experience as I love the cozy Christmas time, but it's time to try something new!

Awesome ideas as usual! I just wanted to leave a comment regarding Jenni Kayne vs Quince Cashmere cardigan (and cashmere pieces in general) for anyone who is interested. I purchased a JK cashmere Cocoon cardigan a couple of years ago and it immediately became one of my most worn articles of clothing pretty much all year round. (Also I purchased it on sale-she does 20% off several times of year and is currently doing 25%). I wanted black so I thought I’d try the one from Quince. And while it is similar, it is definitely not the same. The cut is very different. The shoulder seam is in a different place, the sleeves are considerably shorter (not good for long armed girls like me) and the body is shorter and boxier. The cashmere is much thinner and very prone to terrible static. The JK sweater is thicker, softer and never gets static. The fit is also much more flattering. I have since purchased 2 other JK cardigans. You can often find them secondhand. I have tried other cashmere pieces from quince and agree with you, the joggers are by far the best. The other sweaters were not very soft and I didn’t love the fits-I think I’ve gotten spoiled 😂. However, the one piece I would highly recommend from Quince is the Organic cotton Fisherman sweater-it’s nearly identical to the JK sweater (I also have one of each) and at like a 5th of the price it’s definitely worth it.

I was skeptical about the mug but the handle actually makes a huge difference in holding comfort. I originally got two for my husband and I but our 3 1/2 yo toddler kept taking mine and so I recently ordered another for her 😅 Having taken a pottery class I will say though using pottery you have made yourself is very rewarding. If anyone is thinking about taking a class I highly recommend it!

I’ve bought sweaters from Quince for gifts for cashmere-loving friends, and I agree that its quality is very good. However, I would make sure that anyone you’re considering buying cashmere for is neither vegan and nor wool-averse. I don’t know if it counts as an actual allergy, but even what others consider the softest cashmere makes me feel as though I’m lying in a bed of fire ants.

Word of warning regarding Merit for gifting - don't give their solo shadows to anyone with manual dexterity issues. I have found them to be an absolute nightmare to open & shut. I thought the packaging would be like the Victoria Beckham lid lustres which I can just about deal with, but the Merit ones are made of plastic & don't feel sturdy at all, and the dimensions are even more difficult if you have problems with your hands. I wish they were in a plain shaped jar like MAC Paint Pots (only taller). Plus, some of the colours are way off on their website.

As a minimalist this rule / tip has been applied in my family for years. Here's a few gifts I got that I appreciated vastly: - Wursthof *manicure set* (I think this was one of the most brilliant and creative gifts I got, will probably serve me a lifetime, along with the perfect scissors it has actually working tweezers for eyebrows, a small file and nothing in surplus) - *merino wool baselayers* - this one is random but I will add it, as a wedding gift we got a *220x240 "French style" down* (filled in small squares) warm *duvet* , and my tall husband who wasn't very excited upon receiving now misses it every time we travel and talks about it a lot, didn't allow me to swap for a summer blanket during the summer :D it's really changed our lives quite literally lol. - old school *handkerchiefs*. I always have a tissue in my pocket because outside my nose can get ever so slightly runny easily. These handkerchiefs can end up in the wash, they never cause lint in my pockets and I have got enough of them to have one in each jacket and a couple spare ones for easy swaps when washing - *cashmere sweater* Gifts I personally would appreciate from someone into makeup and skincare (which I am not at all) - something to colour *eyebrows* , I think this one is difficult for us to choose (unlike mascara that you just pick black) - something very gentle to *clean my face* (I tried cerave, but I feel the glycerin in it and I just bleh, so I stick to bioderma) - those *spray freshening* things that celebrities spray on their face on airplanes :D idk if this is an actual thing but if yes, pls get me one, I'd love it and my guess is others like me could too And here's some that I catered to others: - *holder for sunglasses* - *cashmere blanket for couch* - *wool socks* - *mouse pad* - *wallet* - *organizing box/tray/system* for make up or jewelry or the elevated steps thingie (in both one has to be mindful of the space it will take and how effectively these items can fit inside) - *birkenstock slippers* - if you're in doubt get the black leather and cork ones, nobody will be mad at you trust me. Also, wear slippers indoors ppl! - *hario kettle* , I usually get the 1,2 litre one. These kettle's are a great fancy watering can for planty people, since they don't drip and you can water the plant from multiple sides and in between. Truly a gamechanger but most people don't think about this. - on this note, whenever you can get your hands on a good japanese teapot or *jug* that has the *tip of the spout* so well crafted and thin *that it won't drip* down, it's a steal and will likely be an upgrade to whatever the people already have and use. - on this note most people also appreciate good *oil dispensers* - staying in the kitchen, many people can use an upgrade of their *cutting boards* - get the same size you know they like in nice acacia wood or something - while knives are a popular gift how about an actually well-working chef's type of *knife sharpener* -kit - this one will surprise you but I have never failed with this gift: *Tescoma Premier* (or President? not sure by heart now) full metal *peeler* for carrots/potatoes and other veg. Srsly get one for everyone who doesn't have it yet and cooks even a little bit. It's a huge upgrade to pretty much everything else on the market in this category. ( this specific one: sk.pinterest.com/pin/507358714288782065/ ) - nicer *chess set* - *simple belts* - improving some sort of *organization* for the people. Decanting and unifying in their kitchen? New shelf? Fancy shoe boxes? Some sort of collecting hobby that needs proper storage ? - elevated comfortable *pajamas/sleepwear* silk? cotton? both men and women - for very close people even high quality *underwear* (my husband gets bushman trainers as fillers based on the main gift price :D) but for my cousin best friend I'd both absolutely love receiving but also feel comfortable getting her expensive comfy undies - *something for their loves* and passions (cute wool bed for their animal, matching outfit with their child, a premium item for their hobby such as a painting canvas or fancy gear equipment etc) - for females nice *period-products holders* (a nice sleek leather bag that can hold her spare products out of sight but handy and close) you can get some custom made on etsy - *leather toiletry bags* with a square base into which you could just tightly fit both a shampoo and a hairbrush is the size I go for for both genders - this one you have to be careful, since some people already have a favourite brand and aren't into upgrades, but many just buy randoms so fo them a nice reusable *razor* or shaving kit such as leaf could be a good gift

The perfect mug is a very, very personal thing. The East Fork mug is beautiful, but my perfect mug is one sold by a Bucharest roastery, Madison Collection 15cc cappuccino cup. I make espresso drinks and I like the competition style cups with rounded bottoms, they fit into the palm of the hand well, so you can maneuver them as you pour milk, and 150ml is perfect, because it allows for just the right amount of milk, to where a double shot isn't too diluted. Most people, of course, drink filter coffee and tea on the daily, and aren't that specific. Another thing I will say about those cups, they don't chip, I have dropped them on the tile floor, they're fine. I also dropped a big serving plate on top of one of those cups, in the sink. The plate chipped

Yes! I love that you’re promoting elevated versions of daily life items. I make Woodburned kitchenwares that are gorgeous and also fully functional. It’s worth it to have beautiful items in your home that you can put to use AND admire and be inspired by. Win/win!!

Hey Hannah! I was just watching one of your older fashion videos (styling 10 looks with 10 items) and I would LOVE a video or guide on how to shop for quality items like these. You feature a BEAUTIFUL silk skirt that you made, and when I looked up similar items, it’s virtually impossible to find things not made of polyester??! Even on Etsy (I searched “silk tango skirt” and everything that came up was polyester :() Also very hard to find for plus size. 1. How would you recommend finding quality makers/designers? Quality fabrics? Google has not proven fruitful for me, and I want to support and find smaller makers. 1a. Bespoke shoemakers? 2. Would you ever consider making made to order luxury dancewear/luxury clothing again?

Learning the “elevated version of something they already use” idea from you last year was a game changer. My pick: Auric Plush Ritual as the most beautiful lip balm someone likely wouldn’t buy for themselves

Immediately bought the Quince cashmere gloves and East Bay pottery mugs after seeing this video!! Thank you so much for the suggestions. I also have the Quince cashmere joggers and would warn that they do always seem to shrink in length after washing (even though I hand wash the same way as my Babaa sweaters!) Some of my personal suggestions for quality gifts for anyone that also lasts... Manitobah suede/fleece moccasin slippers and Staub cast iron tea kettle. My best purchases ever!!

Definitely agree the Machete claw clips are a great gift idea because they are so high quality and come in such a cute box. I have one and it’s one of the nicest things I have 😂 It’s funny to hear you say the claws are their claim to fame because in 2018 when I first started buying from them it was the Kate tortoise shell hoops. They had me in a chokehold 😅

Last year's guide helped me so much for getting gifts for my parents! They've loved the printfresh robes. I did my shopping early this year, but I'm already considering some of these as options for next year. Gotta come up with your own gift-giving plans when your giftees "don't need anything" 😅
