Thanks for another informative video. The dialogue on all your videos are second to none and so easy to understand without having to rewind and listen a second time. You are by far the easiest to understand and listen to on KZbin. Keep up the good work!

Thank you for the review on the marking gauge. I saw it on Banggood and figured i did not need it but after this video i am definitely getting one. If the router bit is the one i think it is i am looking forward to your upcoming video on it.

I mean, like a lot of premium tools, "need " is perhaps not the right word. If you were to invest in the marking gauge though, I'm quite sure you'll love it. It's a beautiful thing and works superbly. Bit of a tease with the router bit😁 Like I said, I want it to work because I have a use for it. Right materials and set up is tricky though!

Interesting review. I have been trying to work out how to get better parallel marking , and no idea what to search for, other then the typical marking gauges. I watched this, and lo and behold there one on order already. Cheers
@BischBaschBosch5 ай бұрын
Thanks man. Sure you'll love it. You might do this already but, a good general tip is to, where possible, have the side to be marked on your favoured hand side and pull the gauge toward you. Much better control. With the Hongdui, best results are had using the rest. Spend a minute setting the knife or pencil to just the right height for the rest. Light pass first with the knife, then a heavier pass.👍

Nice review. Curious if you tested the HD27 marking gauge on hardwood with moving grain? Compared to MDF the grain of the wood tends to wave a bit and some marking gauges tend to follow it leading to a squiggly line. Could imagine the weight of this one helps it keep on track though
@BischBaschBosch2 ай бұрын
Yeah, used it open grain hardwood a fair bit now - ash and oak mostly. Along the grain (often a problem) these type of pin or point gauges are much better for holding line. Traditional square body wooden ones with a pin are also good. It's wheels and blades that have most issues wandering with the grain in my experience. You can help yourself, whichever gauge, by light passing first, going in harder on the 2nd or 3rd. 👍

@@BischBaschBosch Thanks, that's great to know. I have one of those Japanese wooden ones, which this seems to be the metal version of, which works great, except as you said the scale is totally useless. This might solve that.

That Hongdui HD27 looks fab, it definitely seems like a jump forward for a classic tool. Is the blade sharp enough to not get caught if marking out along the grain, and not waver off track to follow said grain?
@BischBaschBosch5 ай бұрын
Cheers mate. Great question. They're sharp but you could definitely refine the edge with a small nagura. The piece you see me mock tenon marking was cross grain on hard wood (beech). I've done along grain too. What I would say is, using the rest, with the knife set just right, you go light and mark over the line 2 or 3 times. You should that knife marking generally - go light first, then a heavier pass. This should stop wander. With the Hongdui though, support fence out, it just score marks no trouble. The mass of the thing probably helps too.👍

Great reviews Dude. I’d like to see the swivelling marking knife arrangement. It looks similar in principle to the negative offset in motor vehicle steering geometry - the steered wheels automatically return from a steered heading direction to the neutral ‘straight ahead’ position when the steering wheel input is released. They automatically adopt the right heading.
@BischBaschBosch5 ай бұрын
Thamks buddy. Thats a pretty interesting comparison. Great system for the knives though 👍
@dwalsh34695 ай бұрын
On reflection, I’d say the swivel mechanism keeps the tip / centre of the knife in the optimal orientation when marking out on curved work pieces?
@BischBaschBosch5 ай бұрын
@@dwalsh3469it could well but, if marking curved pieces, I'd recommend something like the other one I show with the 2 rollers either side of the pencil/blade. A flat reference face can be a bit unpredictable on a curve.

Hi, yes please let us know where we can get the steel one
@BischBaschBosch5 ай бұрын
There's a small steel one on axminster - Matsui brand. There's a European site called K Met (.com) that has steel ones, various lengths but no micro adjust. Just search "Type T gauge" on there. There's also a site called grandado that stocks the ones I have. Don't know how legit that site is though.👍

I am so jealous of your 500-mm T-type guage. You say they are still available, but not on Banggood. Can you tell me where?

Sorry, but I am confused by your calling scales Vernier when they seem to be just calipers with a scale? Doesn't the Vernier have a 2nd scale for the fractional part?
@BischBaschBosch4 ай бұрын
I only mention "vernier" when checking with callippers or gauges that included vernier scales - the secondary scale that allows for accurate reading of fractions of mm. The steel T-type marking gauges and steel callippers, as mentioned in the video, all had vernier scales. The new tools on review didn't.

Hongdui looking good, but the Jessem Wood Sabre is a lot nicer with its micro adjustment.
@BischBaschBoschАй бұрын
Fair point. The addition of a micro adjust really would have been the cream on top for the Hongdui. I tend to prefer point and blade markers like the Hongdui over the wheel type - as per the Jessem - bit, if you prefer the wheel, the Jessem is hard to beat👍

@@BischBaschBosch with a 3D printer you can design and make guides, jigs, templates. They won't look as good as those aluminum ones, but will suit your needs perfectly I also don't have a 3D printer yet, but mine is on its way towards me.

@@Yoggoth Ah, I see. Other than as a novelty, never really been interested in a 3d printer. I always have a box of aly leftovers as I use it in my furniture. The jigs and machines I make with it can all be made with a bandsaw/jigsaw and a drill. I'd only ever get a 3d printer if I could use it for work.👍
