Dude I’ve been asked to film an 8 year old before and it was super cool but there was this one moment where he fell and smacked his head really fast on some transition. Thankfully he was wearing one of those pro tech bigger brain buckets but oh shit this kid let out one of the biggest cry’s I had heard for a little one. Boy straight screamed and then started sobbing. At that point we stopped filming and his dad pulled him aside to make sure he was alright and he seemed fine. They went to the hospital and everything turned back fine. The dynamic between him and his dad seems pretty healthy too. Will never forget that scream tho and I remember feeling that filming young skateboarders can be mentally a little tough.

there's a really annoying paradox about kids who are forced into a hobby by their parents at a young age (music, sports, languages, computer programming, etc) that they by default are much better at the thing than anybody else who started at a reasonable age because a child brain will absorb anything indiscriminately, and they can take insane risks because their bodies regenerate cells at great speed, but there's almost no correlation between them doing it young versus them becoming invested in it later on enough to make something out of it.

I've seen my fair share of bad parents in snowboarding ever since that became an Olympic sport. Saw a dad scream at his 10 year old son for having a sketchy landing on a 720 off a 40ft kicker. Also saw a dad legitimately say "do you wanna go home and eat? Then land a damn front board and we can go" while his son was crying in pain and hunger..shits crazy. Sad that skateboarding will probably see a lot more of that going forward

I’ve witnessed Trae and his father at demos,early shit too. I use to skate at Oceanside park and kid would get yelled at by his dad for being a “baby” or “pussy” Shit to me felt like child abuse and never in my life ever wanted to smack the shit outta a “grown man”. All I could think about it is “man I wonder how he treats him at home”. Chase Webb is another one that was groomed that way. At Murrieta skatepark you can hear chases dad yelling at him across the park like a pissed off jar head living amongst us. Don’t be surprised if they Columbine at a Tampa contest.
