I have good soldering skill and I can do SMD rework too but my diagnosis level is at of a child.😔😔 I'm learning but it's hard to find a good teacher who can teach how to actually do it and your videos always blows my mind with Hows and WoWs. I wish I had a mentor like you in my country.

I just have to say that you have the hands of a surgeon! Its impossible to understand just how small some of those components are until you are looking at them with your own eyes. Some of those resistors are the size of a grain of salt and are blown away by a light exhale! Ask me how I know 🤦‍♂️. Your videos are a great resource for learning to deal with smd components and I don't think I could have succeeded with my own 0402 sized repair without them.

But Alex, if it's overflowing outside the chip, isn't it also overflowing inside, shorting the chip? Solder will spread inside the gaps on the chip. You're correct, some of us think you're using too much. Thank you for posting this video.

Given the natural surface tension of the solder in the presence of flux, the solder will only adhere to the metal pads under the chip. It will not stay in the areas between the pads.

There is a so mouch easyer way to find where is the shortcut. Just use a 5.5 digit multimeter, and then check the resistance before the inductor what is after after the DC-DC, and after the Inductor. There is a minimum 50miliohm resistance difference. Then you just find where is the lowest one between the inductor and the IC. Then you dont need to power up the whole circuit and pray for not to die the processor. It's works every time.

Hi Alex! I was thinking about the layout of the 12v vrms and i am thinking that if you have a short on the mosfets, then you could apply higher voltage with the positive probe of the injection tool to the 12v input and the negative probe on the output of the vrms. In this way you can apply higher voltage and have higher current passing through the sorted mosfet and the high current doesnt pass through the gpu into ground. Correct me if i am wrong! Anyway a great fix once again!!!

@@Knebebelmeyer Yeah. But remember when a mosfet is shorted, a direct path between the 12v line and the output of the vrms meaning the output of the mosfets/switching transistors that passes through the inductor and the smoothing caps into the vcc of the gpu and to ground.

it wont surprise me if during manufacturing the voltage on the boards are much higher then when it eventually becomes a videocard while voltage is a problem the problem only comes later as your just decreasing the lifespan but if done for heck even a day it shouldn't harm the videocard much your more concerned about the temperature during that voltage then the voltage itself its why you can have a cpu overclocked with over 1.45v with a liquid cooler and barely influenced the lifespan offcourse you don't want to do that but most of us already have a new system before that overclock killed the cpu that said ryzen really benefits from a slight voltage offset of -0.05 it improves thermals but also improves performance gotta love how infinity fabric works

No. Kapton tape is not that good. Aluminum foil tape is much better.

Wrap kapton tape around your finger then touch a hot soldering iron tip. Let us know what happens.

Kapton tape can be better than nothing, but it has its issues as well. When exposed to extreme heat, it may shrink and curl a bit, and this can displace components with melted solder.

It could be used as well. It's just more work to spread the flux out and then clean it up again later. You might also have to be patient and wait for the heat to build up enough to melt the flux.

It's a thermal pad, and i'm sure it's been replaced, to cool the mosfet. There's also thick thermal paste that you can use if you like to.

They are thermal pads and yes you will have to replace those or the card will fry itself to death, also the cooler might not fit properly without the pads underneath.

An odd question perhaps - Can you boost a gpu vram by replacing the memory chips ? for example if you have a gpu of 4gb with 4*1gb chips, and replace the chips for 2gb each, for a total of 8gb. Would it be possible ?

Maybe. Assuming the higher-density chips have a compatible pin-out, and assuming that the firmware of the GPU can recognize and properly initialize the chips, and assuming that you successfully replace all the chips without damaging any important pads or traces, it will work. For the firmware to work, there usually needs to be an existing model of that card with the higher memory configuration.

There are times when I do wonder if under the chip, there is touching of solder from the globs left for the re-soldering. It looks like there might be too much solder put down on the larger pads. I suppose it they were touching then you would read a short? As always, great show Sir.

nope, a large range of fluke meters do it but not all of them, some other brands do it as well but you'll have to research the specific model to find that out
